Recap / Alfred J Kwak S 2 E 18 De Watersnood

Go To

Continues from Groot Waterland Krijgt Een President (Vote For Ollie)

To win votes, Dolf has a dike sabotaged, after which he offers a lot of money and support to the affected areas. However, Lispel is a witness and wants to blackmail Dolf. Wannes is haunted by his conscience.

Tropes:

  • Villainous Breakdown: Dolf at the end.
  • Animal Species Accent: Not really about his voice, but in the finnish dub Dolf makes a few angry and surprised caws.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: Dolf's beak looks yellow in the final scene.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: Ollie's administration is never shown in the subsequent episodes, and he never does anything plot-relevat as the president despite there still being eight episodes to go.
  • Unusually Uninteresting Sight: Alfred and Henk don't seem too surprised by the fact that somebody's knocking on Alfred's door in the middle of the night.
  • "Open!" Says Me: When Wannes doesn't answer the door Alfred throws himself against it, breaking it and crashing into the furniture.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Dolf is a great actor both in front of people and on camera, and jokes around with his campaign staff. Despite this he's an unrepentant murderer, having intentionally caused a flash flood and attempted to personally murder another animal, and wishing to become Waterland's dictator again.
  • Recognition Failure: Henk fails to immediately recognize Lispel. Granted, he's some meters away, standing on crutches and wrapped in bandages.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Dolf gets red eyes when he pulls a gun on Lispel.
  • Sinister Shades: Dolf in the harbor.
  • Call-Back: The pool den Alfred checks is the same one where Dolf played with Hannes and Wannes when they were teenagers, and where they also went in episode 22. The bar Alfred goes to after that is the same one where Dolf and Hannes went in episode 22 after Hannes had come to meet him at the train station. The restaurant whose windows Alfred peers in from is the one Dolf, Wannes, and Hannes ate in the chess queen episodes.
  • Revenge: After Dolf attempts to murder him, Lispel goes straight to Alfred. He tells about the shooting for free and only asks for one gold coin as a payment for telling him everything else.
  • Sunglasses at Night: Dolf wears sunglasses as a disguise when he goes to meet his blackmailer in the middle of the night.
  • Blunt "Yes": Dolf's answer when Wannes asks if he's really going to interrupt his campaign.
  • Toothy Bird: No teeth are shown, but Alfred is brushing the inside of his beak. He could be brushing his lamellae, which are kind of teeth. Later, actual teeth are visible on Alfred when he seethes in anger.
  • This Just In!: In the middle of a standard report about rain-related damages, the newscaster is passed a paper sheet from offscreen. He reads from it that a dam has breached
  • The first portrait of himself Dolf has on his campaign office's wall is kind of funny-looking.
  • Neither Alfred, Henk, or Lispel believe for a moment that Dolf is playing fairly. However everybody else seems fooled.
  • Captain Obvious:
    • There are loud rain sound effects, and Winnie says aloud to herself that it's starting to rain.
    • Near the episode's end Dolf gets a call from Lispel, whom he had attempted to murder and assumed dead. Dolf promptly asks Lispel if he's alive.
  • Dolf's coat color may be intended as a reference to the similiarly colored uniform Hitler wore.
  • One Sided Phone Call
  • Dolf's campaign office has a bust and at least two portraits depicting himself.
  • Apparently Dolf has some kind of a "company".
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus:
    • Is that K. Rokodil in the city hall speech scene?
    • Why are there rats listening to Dolf's speech?
  • Dolf's coat and hat are extremely similiar to the ones he wore in episode 33's dream (the coat only briefly).
  • Blackmail Backfire: Lispel tries to blackmail Dolf, Dolf tries to murder Lispel.
  • Engineered Heroics: Dolf hires criminals to breach a dam so that he can raise his popularity by repairing it for free.
  • Karma Houdini: Dolf manages to escape from the police and dissappears again.
  • Black Mail: Lispel witnesses the dam being breached and sees Dolf is there, so he tells Dolf to meet him in the harbor and tries to blackmail him. It goes very badly and he almost dies.
  • Dolf's blue coat resembles the one he wore in Alfred's dream in episode 33.
  • All Elections Are Serious Business: They are when one of the candidates is a semi-literal Hitler.
  • Spoiler Title: "The flood".
  • Roofhopping: At the end, Dolf escapes the police by jumping out of the window and running on the roofs.
  • In at least the finnish dub, the exaggerated kiss sound effect is really weird, especially since the birds in the series kiss by touching beaks.
  • Lispel's chauffeur is still there, despite the fact Lispel fired him in his first appearance in season 2 episode 1.
  • Drowning My Sorrows: Wannes, after being missing for several days, comes to Alfred's doorstep in the middle of the night looking drunk.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: When Dolf decides to breach the dam Wannes is terrified and tries to dissuade him, and is straight-up horrified when he hears the news that people are dying because of the flood.
  • Broken Pedestal: It already started in the previous episode, and Wannes seems to become straight-up afraid of Dolf.
  • "Uh-Oh" Eyes: At the end, Dolf walks into the sunset with crazy eyes.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: This is Wannes' last appearance, and he's never mentioned again afterwards. Given his involvement in the crime, he may have gone to prison.
  • Dolf's head and beak look weirdly big compared to his body in the scene where he speaks to Wannes in the campaign office. They keep on looking weird and disproportionate.
    • His leg movement after checking his watch is straight-up bizarre.
  • Bandage Mummy: Lispel after getting shot by Dolf, as much as an octopus can be.
  • What Do You Mean, It's for Kids?: Dolf and Lispel meet at a pier in the middle of the night, and Lispel tries to blackmail him. Dolf calmly states he knows what Lispel is playing at and that he'll never stop asking for more money. Dolf then pulls out a gun and tells Lispel that he is going to die, and Lispel begs for him not to shoot and says that he doesn't need to pay. Dolf shoots at him, causing him fall into the water, and keeps shooting in the water until he hears dogs barking and leaves. It's straight out of a gangster flick.
  • Furry Confusion:
    • The newscaster talks about grazing lands and the footage show an empty, fenced enclosure. What exactly lives in there?
    • After Dolf has shot Lispel, barking is heard from somewhere.
  • No Endor Holocaust: Averted. While nobody is shown dying, the newscaster reports a recorded death toll of 27 and counting.
  • All for Nothing: Even if Dolf hadn't been caught, he still wouldn't have become president because Ollie had more votes.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Wannes gets this for his part in the dam breach.
  • Scare Chord: Right at the end as Dolf walks off into the sunset.
  • Guilt-Ridden Accomplice: Wannes.
