A sweet little ghost has lived peacefully with a kind old couple for years, when suddenly a nasty pirate ghost arrives and demands that they all vacate the premises. The nice ghost asks Scooby and his friends to learn who the mean ghost really is and what he actually wants.

Tropes:

  • Agent Scully: At the end of the episode, Daphne still doesn't believe in ghosts even after spending nearly the whole episode interacting with one.
  • Bedsheet Ghost: Unlike Captain Boobeard, Mr. Boo is one and keeps his sheets hanging up in a closet.
  • Captain Colorbeard: The villain of the episode is a ghost pirate named Boobeard.
  • Chained by Fashion: Captain Boobeard has a broken manacle around one of his wrists.
  • Even the Rats Won't Touch It: Not even Shaggy and Scooby, who eat everything, won’t eat O’Greasy’s “Bucket O’ Chili.”
  • Expospeak Gag:
Velma: Jinkies! A visible free-floating full-torso ectoplasmic manifestation!
Mr. Boo: Gee, and all this time I thought I was a ghost!
  • Friendly Ghost: The only real ghost in the episode is actually a very friendly one named Mr. Boo.
  • Gasp!: The gang’s reaction to Mr. Boo telling them that if his house gets torn down, he goes “poof.”
  • Gravity Is a Harsh Mistress: The pulley and rope system that Boobeard uses to fly breaks and he stays in the air long enough to wave goodbye to the audience.
  • Halloween Episode: This episode is set during Halloween, with the gang trick-or-treating at the house Mr. Boo haunts at the beginning of the episode.
  • Haunted House: The Johnsons know their house is haunted, but it’s by a nice ghost. That is, until their nice ghost starts being not so nice and it’s up to the Scooby Doo Detective Agency to figure out what’s going on.
  • Monster Protection Racket: The gang pretends to hire an exterminator to rid the house of the bad ghost, played by nice ghost Mr. Boo, in order to find the culprit behind the fake haunting.
  • Nap-Inducing Speak: Fred going through all 89 of his suspects puts Shaggy and Scooby right to sleep and gets everyone else yawning.
  • Pop-Culture Pun Episode Title: The title is a play on the movie, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner.
  • Red Herring: Mr. Greezy and Mrs. Sterling, restaurant owners, are presented as possible suspects with further evidence pointing to the former. However, Velma finds blueprints that are of a high rise building instead of an eatery, making her realize the culprit was someone else.
  • Real After All: This is the only time that the gang actually encounters something supernatural, rather than just a man in a mask.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Captain Boobeard, the bad ghost, has red scleras with black pupils.
  • Rule of Three: Daphne tries to convince Scooby to come with them to investigate the haunted house by offering him an extra large Scooby Snack, but he says no. She then offers him a super extra large one, but he still refuses. He finally agrees when she has a crane bring in a “super deluxe oh-my-gosh-it’s-coming-towards-me jumbo sized Scooby Snack.”
  • Smooch of Victory: Daphne gives one to Mr. Boo at the end of the episode.
  • Totem Pole Trench: Shaggy and Scooby do this to disguise themselves as “No Ghost,” a ghost exterminator. Strangely enough, they decide to use Scooby as the head.
  • Trail Of Breadcrumbs: The gang follows a trail of crumbs from a “Bucket O’ Fries” to a secret trap door on the Johnsons’ property.
