Recap / A Pup Named Scooby Doo S 1 E 4 The Schnook Who Took My Comic Book

Go To

While the gang is attending a comic book convention, Shaggy buys the first edition of his and Scooby's favorite superhero comic book, Commander Cool and Mellow Mutt. However, the comic ends up being stolen by the Commander Cool's archenemy, Dr. Croaker.

Tropes

  • Amphibian at Large: Commander Cool's archenemy in the comics is Dr. Croaker, a giant frog in white doctor's coat.
  • Batman Gambit: The gang lies about Shaggy having another first issue of Commander Cool that he bought in kindergarten, but completely forgot about, when in reality it is a fake with bubblegum bomb inside to get Dr. Croaker to take it and they can trap him in bubblegum.
  • Conspicuous Trenchcoat: Shaggy and Scooby try this in "The Schnook Who Took My Comic Book" to avoid Dr. Croaker spotting them and stealing their rare Commander Cool comic. The trouble is, everyone recognizes them anyways, notably Daphne...
"Ewww, don't you two know that the Bogart look is out this season?"
  • Hypocritical Humor: Daphne criticizes Freddie for reading the magazines at the convention, but then she starts to get into reading the fashion magazines at the convention.
  • Let's Get Dangerous!: When Dr. Croaker almost succeeds at stealing Shaggy's first edition of Commander Cool, this makes him and Scooby dress up as Commander Cool and Mellow Mutt and steal the comic book back from Dr. Croaker.
  • Noodle Incident: When Shaggy tries to tell the others that Dr. Croaker attempted to steal his Commander Cool comic, Fred and Daphne complain that he's claimed to have been attacked by comic book villains before with no details given aside from the names of the villains and where Shaggy claimed to have been accosted by them.
  • Public Hater, Private Fan: Mr. Cashmore claims that he hates comic books and is only interested making money from them. However, at the end of the episode he admits that he loves comic books and can't live without them but he is ashamed about it because he's 55 years old.
  • Shout-Out: The chase sequence takes place in a movie theater showing a giant gorilla battling a dinosaur.
  • Tempting Fate: After buying the Commander Cool book from Selma, Shaggy talks to Scooby about how for two days they don't have to deal with any mysteries, ghosts, or monsters, before Dr. Croaker appears behind the former.
  • Writers Cannot Do Math: In the episode, Shaggy says there's only three first editions left. If you count them there are actually four. Two in Selma's case which she was selling, one in the case she keeps for herself, and one in Wendell McWendell's case.
