Basic Trope: Jetpacks with a bottom-out exhaust pipe burn the wearer's rear end and legs.
- Straight: Bob tests out Professor Alice's new jetpack and comes back with burn wounds all over his buttocks and legs.
- Exaggerated: Bob tests out Professor Alice's blatantly flawed jetpack design and promptly sets the lab on fire.
- Downplayed: Bob tests out the fully-completed version of Alice's jetpack, which features a few convenient safety measures for the wearer; his pants end up being burnt, but overall he's okay.
- Justified: Alice's Science Degree is actually a fake; she was never really qualified to build a decent Jetpack design to begin with.
- Inverted: The design is fairly well-made, but still injures poor Bob's legs.
- Subverted: Bob begins to panic when he feels immense heat around his lower body... only it turns out to be a spaceship burning up in orbit.
- Double Subverted: ...It's a shame Bob ends up flying too close to the Spaceship, which causes the exhaust to fluctuate and scorch his legs.
- Parodied: Bob ends up with scorched legs, but doesn't react at all to it.
- Zig Zagged: Bob still gets injured by the Jetpack, yet sometimes comes out fine.
- Averted: Professor Alice's jetpack design features a safe, over-the-shoulder exhaust that fires a safe distance away from the wearer's lower body. Bob promptly flies around without any repercussions.
- Enforced: The writer wants to push the idea that people who want Jetpacks are idiots and has Bob be the Butt-Monkey of this scenario.
- Lampshaded: "Okay, Bob. Remember that if something happens to your legs, I'm not at fault here."
- Invoked: Alice knows that Bob, her boyfriend, is a masochist, and decides that he'd enjoy having his legs set on fire.
- Exploited: The CEO of Science Inc rushes Alice's design because he gets off on seeing people get hurt, especially Bob.
- Defied: "No, Bob, my design isn't ready yet. I'm not going to have you or this lab torched up."
- Discussed: "You know how you see those simplistic Jetpacks in all sorts of shows and comics? What do you think that'd be in real life?"
- Conversed: "You'd think that Alice would've learned by now that the human body isn't fireproof. Especially not the legs."
- Deconstructed: Alice's flawed design causes Bob to endure fatal injuries and end up hospitalized with little chance of survival. Alice, having injured her boyfriend/husband, is distraught over this and begins shutting herself off.
- Reconstructed: Having reflected on her flawed design, Alice realizes she could pretend they're safe and sell them off to criminals- Thus using her dangerous jetpacks for good nonetheless.
- Played for Laughs: Bob's legs are scorched, but instead of screaming in agony, he moreso whoops and hollers in hushed "Ow"s while hopping up and down.
- Played for Drama: Bob's mind is overwhelmed with pain by his legs being set on fire, thus making it nigh-impossible for him to stop his flight, therefore meaning his legs have been burned into complete uselessness by the time the jetpack runs out of power.
