Basic trope: A name or word that is too hard to pronounce.
- Straight: There's a character whose name is Kgvarmwêńbwæřžť.
- Exaggerated:
- That is his nickname. His real name is Žmvňďřžpšķľqģfdžbķřþřvňš'hķřqř.
- The name is literally unpronounceable, because human anatomy is physically incapable of producing the required sounds.
- Downplayed:
- His name is a long Polish word, but it's not impossible to pronounce with a bit of practice.
- His name has a lot of syllables.
- Justified:
- The character is a Starfish Alien who speaks a Starfish Language, and for them, that type of words are common and easy.
- The character's name is in Polish, Czech, or another language that has words with those sounds.
- Inverted: A character's name is easy to pronounce, but cannot be spelled because the setting's writing system lacks characters for the required phonemes.
- Subverted:
- Kgvarmwêńbwæřžť is actually just Bob, who uses it as a nickname so he can watch people try and fail to say it.
- Kgvarmwêńbwæřžť is the result of misinterpreting one character code set as another.
- Kgvarmwêńbwæřžť explains that his name is officially just pronounced "Bob".
- Double Subverted:
- Bob borrowed the name Kgvarmwêńbwæřžť from his great-great-grandfather, who kept the name until he day he died.
- It's just as unpronounceable (or even worse) in the intended code set.
- Parodied: His name is so unpronounceable that trying to say it will summon Kgvarkit, The Devourer of Worlds, who will then turn the whole universe into a burning wasteland.
- Zig-Zagged: Kgvarmwêńbwæřžť reveals that he's been using a codename, and reintroduces himself as Bob. However, it then turns out that Bob is a nickname his friends gave him, and his actual name is Žmvňďřžpšķľqģfdžbķřþřvňš'hķřqř... which he then explains is just pronounced "Jack".
- Averted: All characters have easy to pronounce names with simple, common spellings.
- Enforced: The work features an Eldritch Abomination, and the author wants to get across how otherworldly they are by giving them a name that's impossible to pronounce.
- Lampshaded: "Welcome, Mr... my apologies, how should I pronounce your name, sir?"
- Invoked: Alice tells Dave that when they have a child, their name should be Kgvarmwêńbwæřžť.
- Exploited: Kgvarmwêńbwæřžť is sent to fight Harold, a wizard whose most powerful spells require him to say his target's name correctly.
- Defied:
- Alice proposes naming her child Kgvarmwêńbwæřžť, but Dave convinces her to just name them Sam.
- The government starts regulating the names people give to their children. Any names that don't have a clear pronunciation are rejected.
- Discussed: "Sorry if my name confuses you". "Not at all, your name is nothing compared to some people I've met. Their names, now those just can't be pronounced".
- Conversed: "Cosmic horror stories sure love to give their monsters impossible to pronounce names".
- Implied: Carol is reading a medical file. The document's contents are never shown to the audience, but she suddenly says: "What kind of name is that? How do you even pronounce it?!"
- Deconstructed: Kgvarmwêńbwæřžť faces constant bullying due to having such an outlandish name.
- Played for Laughs: It's a Running Gag that nobody can remember poor Kgvarmwêńbwæřžť's name, and he might even become a Phrase Catcher over it.
- Played for Drama: Kgvarmwêńbwæřžť is severely injured in a car accident. When he goes to the hospital, it becomes really difficult for the doctors to notify his family because of his name.
- Played for Horror: Kgvarmwêńbwæřžť is a murderous demon who appears out of nowhere to kill those that speak his name.
