Basic Trope: The Leader of The Team is an unexperienced/new member.

  • Straight: After losing their captain Bash in a tense battle The Greats' Mentor Mascot Kokoko the Kitsune has them meet Julian, who he reveals to be the one taking up Bash's position.
  • Exaggerated: Julian was just a normal student before being brought here by Kokoko. He had no idea such things were real, much less how to solve problems relating to them.
  • Downplayed:
    • Julian was a friend of Bash, so at least he knows some things about his new position.
    • It's actually revealed that he'll be co-leading the heroes alongside Bash's second-in-command Rocky.
    • Julian had some training before getting The Call, so he can at least act competent enough.
    • Bash hasn't died, he's being held captive. Julian is only a temporary member to substitute for him.
    • Although he was brought here unexpectedly Julian is Crazy-Prepared enough to handle this adjustment to his daily life.
  • Justified:
    • Julian felt so similar to Bash that Kokoko felt it would be an opportunity missed not to add him to the group.
    • Alternately, Julian is the younger brother of Bash, and leadership runs in their family, so it made sense to choose him.
    • It's tradition in the Crystal Meadows for the leaders of heroic teams to be the youngest of them.
    • Julian was The Chosen One Kokoko was trying to find.
    • Julian had obtained Bash's Magical Accessory, which is only owned by whoever the Greats' captain is.
    • Kokoko is a Sink or Swim Mentor; having Julian in this spot is best way for him to gain experience in his eyes.
  • Inverted:
    • Bash gains a bunch of inexperienced fighters when he loses his original team in battle.
    • Julian is the oldest member of the group, but never becomes the captain of it.
  • Subverted:
    • At first Julian looks like he'll become the new captain, but ends up becoming the advisor to the now promoted Rocky.
    • Bash turns back up in an unexpected twist, thus there's no reason for Julian to be the captain.
    • Julian denies the offer to take Bash's place.
    • Julian ends up not lasting long either...
    • Julian is put in Bash's position as the team's archer, not his position as the team's leader.
  • Double Subverted:
    • That is, until Rocky bites the dust soon enough, leaving Julian the only one in line to succeed him.
    • However he's only a ghost now, so he can't actually become leader again, thus Julian will have to serve as a stand-in.
    • When he ends up finding his Doomed Hometown destroyed however, he quickly turns back on that decision.
    • ...and Kokoko ends up finding and handing leadership to Julian's Backup Twin Samantha.
  • Parodied: Kokoko has a raffle to determine who will take Bash's place, with the rest of the party tense since they know none of their names are included.
  • Zig-Zagged: When Kokoko brings Julian he states that he'll act as leader with regular member Rocky. Eventually Rocky becomes more valued than him in discussions, so it's agreed that he takes full control. Upon his death however the party turns to Julian to lead since he was techinally appointed by Kokoko, but he runs away to leave them, unable to handle being the captain... coming back later with a headstrong mindset and taking the lead.
  • Averted:
    • A new person is not made captain of The Greats, instead Rocky is.
    • Julian does not join the Greats at all.
  • Enforced:
    • "How do we bring Julian into the cast while bringing him into an important position and making him feel mysterious?" "We could make him the new captain. We're killing Bash off anyway."
  • Lampshaded:
Dylan: How come this kid is our captain now? None of us even know him.
  • Invoked:
    • Kokoko wanted to have Julian lead because Bash was also brought in the same way, although only a few current members were around for it.
    • Kokoko made Julian leader to pull his focus away from his phobia.
  • Exploited: Knight in Sour Armor Harold knows Julian won't be the ideal leader in a snap, so he takes to treating him as a Replacement Scrappy.
  • Defied: When Bash became the captain he requested who would succeed him if he was no longer available.
  • Discussed:
Madam Pancaea: With Bash gone, who do you think will take his place?
Harold: Heck, knowing Kokoko he'll more likely find some New Meat and say that's who's replacing him.
  • Conversed:
Georgina: I mean, I get why Bash is out now, but how come this Julian lad is taking his spot?
Ethan: I think it's to signify a new era in the series. Bash was The Hero for the first two seasons, now we're getting Julian so his own arc can develop independent of Bash's.
  • Played for Laughs: When Kokoko talks about his chosen replacement for Bash Rocky confidently assumes it's him... then Kokoko points to a background character behind him, confusing everyone.
  • Played for Drama: Charles Dislikes the New Guy for taking what he believes to be his desired position so he tries to form a coup with Black Mage Stella and Rocky to throw him out of the Greats.
