Playing With / Jump Jet Pack

Go To

Basic Trope: Device used to quickly move, hover, make leaps, and/or slow descent.

  • Straight: The Hermes Wings allows one to perform a Double Jump, a Dash Attack, and achieve Not Quite Flight.
  • Exaggerated: Though the Hermes Wings technically don't allow you to fly, the sheer mobility and omnidirectional movement makes that a non-issue.
  • Downplayed: The Hermes Wings allows superhuman mobility, though not by much as it only allows short bursts in the four cardinal directions and upwards.
  • Justified:
    • The Hermes Wings manipulates a force such as wind, electrical attraction, gravity, etc that would require much more work & precision to achieve true flight.
    • The Hermes Wings are in a setting too low-tech to achieve true flight yet just advanced enough to deal with aerial movement, such as using giant balloons.
    • The Hermes Wings were improvised on the spot, so there wasn't enough time and/or resources to make a true Jet Pack.
    • The Hermes Wings are easier to replace than a Jet Pack and offer decent enough mobility options to be useful.
  • Inverted: The Anchoring Brake allows one to instantly come to a stop, cancelling all current momentum.
  • Subverted: The Hermes Wings seem to only allow short bursts, but in actuality Bob was just cutting off the thrust mid-flight.
  • Double Subverted: ...Still, The Hermes Wings do have a drift mode and power save mode, allowing/forcing Bob to use it as a traditional Jump Jet Pack.
  • Parodied:
    • The Hermes Wings are a pair of gigantic shoulder-pads connecting to two very obviously fake wings, with Bob struggling under the weight of.
    • Bob has a Harrier strapped to his back. note
  • Zig Zagged: ???
  • Averted: Either there are actual Jet Packs or there's no need for enhanced movement.
  • Enforced:
    • "Jet Packs are too stereotypical, instead let's go with the more creatively workable Jump Jet Pack!"
    • Alice is too heavy for the flight rig's motor to be run for more than a quarter minute every two hours.
  • Lampshaded: "With all this zipping and hopping about, I have to wonder if you're secretly a rabbit or frog."
  • Invoked: Alice, apprising to be a superheroine, retools a Jet Pack so she can zip about in battle.
  • Exploited: Emperor Evulz puts everything important to his evil plans out of reach of a Jump Pack, forcing his foes to either use vehicular craft to reach him or attempt to sneakily enter.
  • Defied: "I want to fly, not dance around like a rabbit on crack! So I am going to finish my device and do so!"
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: ???
  • Implied: Though Alice is known as something of a Flying Brick, she's also always seen wearing an unexplained technological pack when fighting crime.
  • Deconstructed: The Hermes Wings, needing to account for g-force, shock impact, friction and so much more, they end up being bulky & costly if you want to move at all superhumanly.
  • Reconstructed: Though numerous factors need to be accounted for to make it safe, The Hermes Wings ends up as a full suit of Powered Armor
  • Played For Laughs: The Hermes Wings are literally wings, big with fluffy feathers which molt some whenever it is used.
  • Played For Drama: The Hermes Wings end up malfunctioning, uncontrollably and erratically throwing its user all around.
