Basic Trope: A character changes into a new outfit after a Heel–Face Turn.

  • Played Straight: General Drake has a crisis of conscious and leaves The Empire, changing from his black armor into something more like the heroes he once fought.
  • Exaggerated: In a long battle against Bob, General Drake's armor comes apart. He pulls on a more casual coat from nearby... and suddenly realizes he doesn't want to fight for The Empire anymore and goes to volunteer at the local soup kitchen.
  • Downplayed: General Drake recently removed the Spikes of Villainy from his armor and has been acting more like a Noble Demon than a Card-Carrying Villain.
  • Justified:
    • General Drake's armor was the official uniform of The Empire. Since he no longer fights for them, he won't go wearing their colors anymore.
    • General Drake's armor was a symbol of fear and oppression. Realizing the pain and suffering he caused, Drake destroys the armor to symbolically bury that past life.
    • General Drake now simply dislikes his old clothing.
  • Inverted:
  • Subverted: Bob is amazed to see General Drake in casual clothing and seeming to be on his best behavior. Drake reveals it's just his day off and he'll be back to business tomorrow.
  • Double Subverted: During Drake's day off, he does a lot of introspection and realizes he doesn't agree with the Empire's way of running the system. He puts in his letter of resignation without donning his armor again.
  • Parodied: After leaving the Empire, Alice drags General Drake with her on a shopping trip to change him out of "that tacky suit of armor" into something more colorful and fashionable.
  • Averted: Despite leaving the Empire, Drake keeps his armor to fight in.
  • Enforced: "We don't want Drake to get lost in the big fight scenes among all the other black armored mooks now that he's a good guy. Give him something more personalized."
  • Lampshaded: "So, did you shed your bad attitude like you did your armor?"
  • Invoked: General Drake removes his armor in front of the heroes as he tells them he no longer follows Emperor Evulz or his wicked ways to prove he's not there to fight them.
  • Exploited: General Drake makes a show of taking off his armor to claim he's not there to fight anyone, all while he's hiding a knife in his clothing under the armor to stab Bob In the Back once his guard is down.
  • Defied: Despite defecting from the Empire, Drake keeps his armor because...:
    • Drake's armor is Powered Armor. He may be fighting against Emperor Evulz now, but he's not giving up his best weapon against him.
    • Drake wants to make the armor a symbol of how The Empire can be redeemed once Emperor Evulz is defeated.
    • Drake just plain likes the style.
  • Deconstructed: Just because Drake is wearing a new outfit and claims to have changed for the good doesn't erase the evil he did as general. La Résistance locks Drake up.
  • Reconstructed: After having Drake in custody long enough to see he might be telling the truth about reforming, he's allowed to fight with the heroes as a Boxed Crook.
  • Played For Drama: The black armor symbolized General Drake's loyalty to Emperor Evulz and his stated goals of creating a better world. Once Drake sees Evulz's claims were all a lie, he abandons the armor and falls into a state of depression over the sense of betrayal even as he fights against the corrupt Empire.
