Basic Trope: A dog will be male, a cat will be female, and their owners will often be the same gender.
- Straight: Fluffy is a female Cute Kitten owned by Alice. Fido is a male Big Friendly Dog owned by Bob.
- Exaggerated: Cats and dogs are shown to be a One-Gender Race, all female and all male respectively.
- Downplayed:
- Fluffy is female and Fido is male, but other than that they mostly don't adhere to the stereotypes.
- Fluffy is a female and Fido is (implied to be) genderless, but identifies as a male or goes by male pronouns for the sake of simplicity.
- Fido is a male and Fluffy is the one who's genderless, but uses female pronouns.
- While Fluffy and Fido are the main characters, tomcats and female dogs do exist as background characters.
- Fluffy and Fido are Masculine Girl, Feminine Boy, respectively.
- Fluffy is female and Fido is male, but their owners are different gender.
- Justified:
- Alice likes cats, Bob likes dogs, and they simply feel more comfortable with a pet the same gender.
- Alice and Bob both wanted a pet (a cat for Alice, a dog for Bob) and the first adoptable ones they came across were a molly and a sire respectively.
- Inverted: Fifi is a female Precious Puppy owned by Alice and Max is a domestic shorthair owned by Bob.
- Subverted: Tom the male cat joins Fluffy and Fido.
- Double Subverted: Then Tom gets pregnant.
- Parodied:
- Alice is a Straw Feminist who will not have any pet but a female cat.
- Tom joins the cast...but then she gets pregnant...and all of her kittens are mollies too.
- Charles doesn't believe male cats and female dogs exist.
- Zig Zagged:
- Fluffy and Fido start off as the only cat and dog, then Tom the male cat joins in...except Tom turns out to actually be a Thomasina and she gets pregnant...but then either Fifi the female dog joins the cast, the father of Thomasina's kittens joins the cast, one or more of Thomasina's kittens is male, or a combination of those things happen.
- The show features the Cast Herd of dogs and cats, and mostly focuses on Fluffy and Fido, Fluffy is One of the Boys with her tomcat friends, while Fido is One of the Girls with his bunch of female dogs.
- Averted: There are many cats and dogs in the cast and they are of varying genders.
- Enforced:
- The author has a thing for Cat Girls, and makes the dog a male so he can be the Idiot Hero without the viewers worrying that they're a misogynist.
- For whatever reasons, the series plays all the Animal Stereotypes straight or exaggerated.
- Lampshaded: "Oh Fluffy, I just love your feminine feline wit."
- Invoked: Alice and Bob, for whatever reason, say "I want a cat/dog the same gender as me!" to the people at the animal shelter.
- Exploited:
- Fido is a Lovable Sex Maniac who loves female cats, and visits human women's homes first to find them.
- Same as above, but it's Fluffy who humps male dogs.
- Dave is an animal breeder from another town. He knows that all the cats in Alice, Bob, Fluffy and Fido's hometown are female and all the dogs are male so when he wants a mother cat or a father dog, he just searches this town.
- Defied:
- Alice hates cats and Bob hates dogs. They opt for a different pet (e.g, a snake).
- Both Alice and Bob hate animals in general and don't get any pets.
- Alice and Bob, for whatever reason, only want a cat or dog of the opposite gender.
- Neither Alice nor Bob get a cat or dog...but it's not because they hate them, it's for other reasons (not enough time, allergies, inexperienced, landlord won't allow, etc).
- Discussed: "Is it hard for you cat ladies to deal with oafish dog men?"
- Conversed: "Hey Carl, ever notice how the cat is always a girl and the dog is always a guy?"
