Playing With / Catchphrase Insult

Go To

Basic Trope: A person uses an insult or threat as a Catchphrase.

  • Straight: Bob says, "Taste my sword!" to every person, animal, or object who/that threatens him.
  • Exaggerated:
    • Every single person has an insult or threat used as a Catchphrase.
    • Bob has several insults and threats that he takes in turns to use as catchphrases.
  • Downplayed: Bob says, "Taste my sword!" sometimes, but not quite often enough for it to be a catchphrase.
  • Justified: Bob is a Hot-Blooded guy who fights a lot. It makes sense for him to have a favorite insult/threat.
  • Inverted: Bob tends to use the phrase "clever boy/girl" in reference to other people.
  • Subverted: Bob's friends make clear that they don't like Bob calling them "extras", with the implication that they are a Red Shirt squad to his own story.
  • Double Subverted: Bob instead tries to shove the word "clod" in the conversation every time he can. He is actually insulting them, but considering that they dig dirt for a living, they don't catch on to that meaning of his Catchphrase.
  • Parodied:
  • Zig-Zagged: Bob uses, "Taste my sword!" as a catchphrase. Alice tends to use the word "astute", which many people misinterpret as an insult. Charlie says, "I don't believe it" regularly, and Dracone uses "imbecile", but for his True Companions, it's an Insult of Endearment.
  • Averted: Bob's catchphrase has nothing to do with insults or threats.
  • Enforced: The executives want Bob's catchphrase to be something memetastic, and a cool threat fits the bill.
  • Lampshaded: "'Taste my sword'? Don't you ever say anything else?"
  • Invoked: Bob decides to say something intimidating to people to make them fear him.
  • Exploited: Emperor Evulz uses Bob's favorite threat/insult to spot him in a bunch of lookalikes.
  • Defied: "Don't you ever fucking dare call me any insults. And if you decide to make insulting me some kind of Catchphrase or Running Gag or whatever the hell is the best term for it, you better start to save for the CONSTANT! RECONSTRUCTIVE!! SURGERIES!!! you will have to get every time I hear you and I make my displeasure very clear. Do you understand me?"
  • Discussed: "I am sorry. I don't see anything cool in you constantly calling me a 'useless clod.' Isn't there any other kind of term you can use to designate me?"
  • Conversed: "Gee, the writer must think 'imbecile' is the most impressive word in the dictionary, eh?"
  • Played for Laughs: Bob's Catchphrase Insult is narmy and/or an Insult Backfire.
  • Implied:
    • Bob is The Ghost and people say he says the same insult to them all the time.
    • Bob's catchphrase sounds innocuous but the other characters take it as an insult for some reason, probably not all down to Political Overcorrectness.

Catchphrase Insult, you are a sack of garbage!
