Mythology Gag / Gotham Knights (2022)

Go To

  • A science exhibit in Gotham University says Niles Caulder got mainstream attention for his work on neuroscience note , and also references a joint project between Erdid Orson (the creator of a Aquaman villain) and Gilbert Giles (a teacher of Hank Heywood) on cellular fusion.
  • The GCPD evidence area has some of Catwoman's stolen diamonds, and the doll of the Peyton Riley Ventriloquist.
  • The GCPD has files on the four knights, written by Romy Chandler, Marcus Driver, and Crispus Allen, who were all members of Gotham City Major Crimes Unit in the comics. Nightwing's file references Lieutenant Svoboda; Detective Elise Svoboda appears in the Nightwing comics.
  • As shown in one of the gameplay previews, one of Dick Grayson's post-combat quips references his classic Mad Libs Catchphrase from the 60's show.
    Nightwing: Holy perfect attack, Nightwing!
    • At one point, Tim Drake gets onto his inherited role.
Robin: Holy Voice of the Court, we have a match!
  • As the game progresses, the Knights receive emails from characters in the wider DCU:
    • Nightwing gets emails from Clark Kent, Lois Lane, Starfire, and also Lieutenant Svoboda, Bridget Clancy, and Shawn Tsang, supporting characters from the Nightwing comic series.
    • Batgirl has an email from Diana Prince, an email chain with Kara Danvers and Dinah Lance, and also Alysia Yeoh and Frankie Charles, supporting characters from Batgirl comic series. Later on she gets one from HOOQ, a dating app that appeared in her comic series.
    • Robin has an email from Cassie Sandsmark, who says the Titans send their love even if Tim isn't returning Cyborg's calls, Bart Allen, who says Young Justice has to stick together, and later on Connor Kent about going looking for Mothman.
    • Red Hood gets emails from Clark Kent, and Roy Harper, who says that he, Jason, and Kori can bust heads together - just like the original team of Red Hood and the Outlaws. Later on, he gets one from Isabel Ardila, his love interest from the same series.
  • One of the suits that got revealed by IGN, Tim's Eternal costume switches his logo from the stylized R to the yellow bird that Tim used as his logo when he was Red Robin in the comics. The suit also puts Tim in a cowl and its transmog coloration is red and black with no green, just like his first Red Robin costume.
  • The colorways used to change suit colors in the prerelease gameplay include a predominately orange and blue scheme called Tribute Slade, in reference to Deathstroke, and a predominately orange and green scheme called Uniform Kobra, in reference to the Kobra Cult.
  • The newspaper pages revealed before release feature an Ingram D. Wade complaining about the riddles and an SK Animal Shelter looking for volunteers. Ingram D. Wade is almost an anagram of Edward Nygma, swapping out an 'I' for the 'Y', and the SK Animal Shelter refers to Selina Kyle.
  • In the tutorial level the player will find a movie poster for The Gray Ghost. Its release date's the same as the episode's original airdate, but with the month and day inverted.
  • The high scores for the Spy Hunter game in the Belfry feature the Knights, Bruce and Alfred; and also HEL, CLA, DIN - Helena Bertinelli, Clark Kent and Dinah Lance.
  • Dick did an interview with Arturo Rodriguez, who in the comics was a journalist in Gotham for Batman: War Games.
  • The Penguin has Clock King's hat and one of Captain Boomerang's Boomerangs in the Iceberg lounge.
  • Jacob Kane's plan is broadly reminiscent of the first arc of Detective Comics (Rebirth).
  • There's a weapons collection featuring guns previously owned by Tallulah Black and Sgt. Rock, as well as a pair of Japanese swords gifted by Tatsu Yamashiro, AKA Katana.
  • One memo in S.T.A.R. Labs refers to a sample AC1938, which is seemingly indestructible and calls on help from Cadmus to analyze. The sample number clearly stands for Action Comics 1938, referencing the first appearance of Superman, and the sample is some of his hair. The memo also mentions "the K-metal", which is what Kryptonite was called in its first appearance.
  • In the Batman: Arkham Series, Kate Kane had a voice cameo on Bruce's answering machine. Her existence in this game is established almost the same way, through a phone message to her from her father.
  • Lois Lane emails Dick about a vigilante called "Nite-Wing" working in Bludhaven, a story arc from early on in Chuck Dixon's Nightwing series.
  • Blackgate's records have a poem written by Cyrus Gold, and The Powers Club contains flowers picked from Gotham's Slaughter Swamp.
  • The Monarch Theatre has a poster of Giovanni Zatara, which says he was suspected of having real magic after a fire was put out before responders arrived, and a poster for Mucous Membrane, a 1970s band from Liverpool where every member met a tragic end.
  • On the front doors of the Monarch Theater's a poster for some kind of performance by obscure DC character Brother Power the Geek.
  • A sight you might see driving around is a store called Rags and Tatters, which was owned by an obscure DC hero named Ragman.
  • You might find yourself having to rescue hostages from inside the Saul Erdel Planetarium. Saul Erdel was the scientist whose computerized brain accidentally teleported Martian Manhunter to Earth.
  • In the Belfry you can find pictures of Jason and Roy Harper in the middle of a bar fight, Barbara with Dinah Lance and Helena Bertinelli and Tim Drake with Connor Kent.
  • One of the emails that show up is the DC Universe equivalent of the Nigerian prince scam, about buying shares in an extremely fake-sounding gold mine discovered in Markovia (Markovia being a small fictional European nation where Batman happened to end up right before forming the Outsiders with a motley crew of other heroes who helped him overthrow its dictator).
  • During post-game dialogue, in a conversation where Dick and Jason argue if Tim has become the better Robin, Jason makes a snide comment referencing the old Hostess fruit pies comics.
Dick: As Robin, I set a pretty high bar.
Jason: You're right - there's no way I could have stopped the theft of all those sponge cakes and fruit pies.
  • Sweet Justice, the ice cream parlor hangout of the DC Super Hero Girls, is a location in the game. Appropriately, they both share Barbara Gordon as the focal Batgirl.
  • At the masquerade ball, Renee Montoya wears a suit, and she's chided by Catherine Kane for not wearing formalwear. This is a reference to a similar conversation that Catherine had with her stepdaughter (and Renee's former girlfriend at the time) Kate in Batwoman: Elegy.
  • When Montoya's brought to the Belfry, she recognizes Dick as Nightwing immediately. Tim mocks him for how little effort he puts into his act, how "you don't even do a voice or anything", while he's doing an impression of the trademark growl Christian Bale did in-costume as Batman.
  • Bradley Gates died building a bridge for the Kanes, just like in Batman: Gates of Gotham.
  • The visitors log at Arkham Asylum lists Hugo Strange, Aaron Cash and Doctor Victoria October. There are also cells for Killer Croc, Professor Pyg and Jane Doe.
  • One of the suits for Red Hood is almost exactly the same as the one worn in Batman: Arkham Knight.
  • According to the Southside Glassworks landmark, the first villain Batgirl fought after returning to active duty was the Mirror, exactly the same as Batgirls New 52 comic.
  • When Jason and Barbara talk about a timetravelling magician in a TV show, Dick thinks it's something that actually happened and asks if it was Constantine or Willoughby Kipling.
  • When breaking into the Powers Club just before the first encounter with the Court of Owls, there's a part where two secret buttons have to be found and pressed. One of them's hidden in a bust where the head flips back to reveal it, making the player's character remark that it's a little obvious. That could easily be a reference to how in Batman that's how the secret button that opened the entrance to the Batcave was hidden.
  • Barbara's physiotherapist is called Gail.
  • Jason asks Dick why he chose Dick as his nickname instead of something else derived from Richard, such as Ric.
  • The Belfry cat is named Cisco, which Dick says has a good vibe.
  • The Mob's minibosses, Godmothers, are reminiscent of Sofia Falcone.
  • Mr. Freeze's sidequest can basically be seen as a Recycled Script of the Batman: The Animated Series episode "Cold Comfort": Freeze's rampage is due to Nora leaving him, his grand plan is to freeze Gotham with a stolen machine, and one of the big reveals is his acquisition of something spider-like (in the show he was reduced to a head with robotic spider legs, while the game goes to another extreme by giving Freeze a Spider Tank).
  • The Batcycle's Spoiler colorway is a reference to Stephanie Brown, the fourth Robin and third Batgirl.
