The Tiger Awakens is an AlternateHistory.com Election Game by user Augenis. It is based on a Hearts of Iron 4 game with the players governing the Republic of China as it navigates the challenges of this alternate world and the 20th Century.


The Tiger Awakens contains examples of:

  • The Ace: Some character can make initiatives that literally, cannot go wrong with Tatiana Antonova, Claire Poincare, and Yuni Tian being prominent examples.
    • Other Aces include Sima Jia, who was both President, Premier, and a slew of others posts during his career.
  • The Alliance: Originally, the Pacific-Atlantic Treaty Organization (PATO) is this for the Western World.
    • Later, the International Solidarity Pact, NATO and the Pacific Rim Security Treaty replaces PATO.
  • Assassination Attempt: Let's just say that Premiers don't have a long life expectancy.
  • Balkanize Me: The collapse of the FECR after Gerhard Frey's coup qualifies as this
  • Book Burning: Is commonly done to Tatiana Antonova's novels with people calling her novels 10/10 firewood.
  • Canon Immigrant: Tatiana Antonova initially was a major figure in A Collaborative Future of the World.
  • China Takes Over the World: A major theme of the election game as a whole.
  • Chummy Commies: The FECR, which was somewhat democratic and was arguably pretty friendly when there's a left-wing government in power.
    • India counts too, being both democratic and communist, and arguably, not that unpleasant to be in.
  • Commie Land: India, the DSR/FECR, and the French Commune are differing flavors of this with India and the FECR being democratic to some degree while the French Commune was a totalitarian communist dictatorship.
  • Conspicuously Public Assassination: The open assassination of Georges Marchais by Lishan Hubei. It also started the chain of events which led to the fall of the French Commune and the FECR.
  • Corrupt Politician: The Leis, Robert Meng, and Li Shi are revealed to be this with them operating a corrupt political machine which goes beyond voter fraud to large-scale fraud, scams, and graft when it was revealed to the world.
  • The Coup: Happens in China on what is roughly a 15-year cycle.
  • Different World, Different Movies:
  • Dirty Communists: The French Commune, a totalitarian Stalinist dictatorship which had a colonial empire of "autonomous socialist republics". They are defeated by an international coalition and their empire broken up
  • Disaster Democracy: A little thing such as a defeated coup and potential nuclear devastation isn't gonna stop the 1986 elections from going ahead.
  • Double-Blind What-If: Tatiana Antonova's Novel, The East Is Red is this. a propaganda piece by KMT, it deals with the world where Mao Zedong Won.
  • End of an Era: The Fall of France and, later PATO
  • Fictional Political Party: A lot of them. Examples include:
    • The Patriotic Labour Party: A big-tent left-wing party having everyone from communists to social democrats running around.
    • The Purple List: A progressive party. Two of them (One having been disbanded).
    • The Fidesian Workers' Coalition: Minority-oriented left-wing party.
    • The Second Yihetuan: Wants to throw out western influence. Banned.
  • Heel–Face Revolving Door: Alexander Lien, who goes from a minister in a Progressive government, to allying with the rightist Clairé Poincaré against the PLP. Then after the 1985 coup reinventing himself as the leader of the new Third Way-ish KMT only to shake hands with the defenders of the 1985 coup in 1990 to gain power.
  • Irony: National Liberalism, a combination of fascist-esque nationalism and social liberalism, claims the ideological heritage of both Liang Zemin and Tatiana Antonova.
  • Karma Houdini: Liang Zemin. He goes from a far-right rabble-rouser in the late 1970s who stirs up racial hatred and resentment against the perceived "Western" Chinese government, to (briefly) President of a coup government in 1985 that he ends up brought down and his party banned, but by 1994 he's living in luxury in "house arrest", the President listens to his advice sometimes, his party in all but name is now mainstream and his rival on the far-right just discredited himself in an ironic echo of 1985. From annoying anti-establishment rabble-rouser to failed couper to de facto party elder statesman. And just in 20 years.
  • Operation: [Blank]: China during World War 3 infamously named war plans in Early 1995 "War Plan Rhaegar", "War Plan Myrcella", "War Plan Brienne", "War Plan Bran", and "War Plan Daenerys".
  • Our Presidents Are Different
    • Luqiu Xiaotong is President Target, first being detained in the 1986 coup and later dying from malaria
    • Zhao Lei is Premier Corrupt, being part of a wide-ranging group with the goal of ballot stuffing
    • Sima Jia is both President Personable and President Iron, staring down French aggression and steering the ship of state for more than 10 years
    • Arguably, Tatiana Antonova is President Geek, being a prolific writer outside of her Presidential duties. She is also President Minority due to being an ethnic Russian as well.
  • The Performer King: President Tatiana Antonova wrote novels while being President of China.
  • Refuge in Audacity: Liang Zemin, after becoming the President of a coup government that falls apart, writes a tell-all book blatantly declaring that he "saved" Chinese democracy. 25% of China believes him.
    • China as a whole.
  • Renaissance Man: Deconstructed with Tatiana Antonova as while she is the most powerful active character in the game with many talents, she is unpopular due to literally writing novels as President.
  • The Republic: China, obviously.
  • Retired Badass: Many Politicians were soldiers, notably Yan Zhen who fought in the major wars of the mid-20th Century and Sima Jia.
  • Richard Nixon, the Used Car Salesman: Oooh, boy.
    • Li Bingbing, Xi Jinping and Lee Jun-fan are attempted assassins, the latter of whom is controversially executed by the government. Though Li Bingbing's attempt succeeded
    • Jiang Zemin is a respected journalist and book critic, whilst Chen Shui-bian is a prominent astronaut.
    • Nursultan Nazarbayev was an anti-Chinese guerrilla leader at one point.
    • Chan Kong Sang is a President of China who is best-known for winning World War III. Jackie Chan attempts to downplay it by attempting to return to his acting career, but it ultimately fails, playing it straight.
  • Rising Empire: The Republic of China is this during the first part of the election game.
  • Self-Made Man: The right-wing's leadership is mostly made up of this.
  • Those Wacky Nazis: Won this world's Second World War only to fall in a Communist revolution during the Third World War which led to the rise of the FECR.
  • Villain with Good Publicity: Liang Zemin after his coup.
  • Vote Early, Vote Often: The Lei Machine is infamous for this.
  • Why We Are Bummed Communism Fell: With the fall of France, the United States becomes a competitor with China on the world stage. Several countries collapse, and there are full-on genocides in the Caucasus
  • We ARE Struggling Together: The vast majority of political alliances are like this, especially the KMT-Liberal Action alliance and the Minmeng-Guomingeming alliance in the 1950s.
  • World War III: Breaks out between the US-led NATO and PRST on one side and the Chinese-led GDI on the other. Which China won in 1996.
