The Last Girl Scout is a post-apocalyptic novel by Natalie Ironside.

Two hundred years After the End, Mags Blackadder, a commissar in the Ashland Confederated Republic, has to go to the bombed out ruins of Washington, D.C. to stop a superweapon from falling into the hands of the Blackland Republic. Along the way, she faces off against zombies, vampires and fascists.

Tropes

  • Action Girl: Our hero, Mags Blackadder, is an accomplished commissar and soldier in her own right, and kicks her fair share of ass.
  • After the End: It's been about two hundred years since the bombs dropped.
  • Big Bad: The Blackland Republic is the overarching source of conflict, though some members are more prominent than others.
  • Chummy Commies:
    • The ACR is a Marxist republic, and they're definitely the good guys. The author is a communist herself, and she's done her research.
    • The Freeside Special Economic Zone may be wary of the 'reds', but they are otherwise very friendly, and very anarchist.
  • Friendly Neighborhood Dracula: Lukash and Becky are basically the only vampires in the book that aren't working with the fascists.
  • Monster Progenitor: Lukash and Otto were some of the few surviving Nachtjager from World War 2. Otto fled to America where he helped create more draculas, while Lukash defected to the Soviet Union, and presumably only ever turned Becky.
  • Non-Heteronormative Society: People from all across the LGBT+ spectrum are represented in Ashland and Freeside, and gender norms in general are very relaxed.
  • Not Using the "Z" Word:
    • The shambling cannibalistic corpses are called 'roamers', not zombies.
    • The nocturnal superpowered bloodsuckers are never referred to as vampires. They are, depending on who is talking, called 'hunters', 'Nachtjagers', or 'draculas'.
  • Politically Incorrect Villain: The Blacklanders are this by virtue of being literal white supremacists.
  • Shout-Out: Suffice to say the author has played her fair share of Fallout and S.T.A.L.K.E.R.
  • The Woobie: Jules has been through the wringer, as a trans woman in a fascist territory.
  • Zombie Apocalypse: Downplayed. There are definitely zombies around, but they're far from the main threat.
