Contains examples of:

  • Action Girl: Nihuang. The narration describes her as "a brilliant female general, commanding a hundred thousand cavalry units at the empire's southern border".
  • As You Know: Nihuang explains the Langya List... to Mei Changsu, who already knows all of this.
  • Babies Ever After: In the epilogue Jingyan and his wife have a baby.
  • Big, Screwed-Up Family:
    • The Xie and Zhuo families are very screwed-up, as poor Jingrui discovers.
    • The royal family, with the exception of Jingyan, are constantly scheming against each other.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Changsu dies, but the Chiyan army have been cleared and Jingyan is on the throne.
  • The Chessmaster: Mei Changsu orchestrates almost everything that happens in the novel.
  • Childhood Brain Damage: Fei Liu suffered a head injury when he was young, and because of it he's mentally still a child.
  • Clear Their Name: Changsu's goal is to clear the names of his father and the whole Chiyan army.
  • Doorstopper: The novel is 174 chapters long.
  • Double In-Law Marriage: A weird example thanks to how messed-up both families are: Jingrui's sister (on the Xie side of his family) marries his brother (on the Zhuo side), and Jingrui himself technically belongs to both because they don't know whose son he really is.
  • Everyone Is Related: Through his mother Changsu is related to the royal family and the Xie family.
  • Pun-Based Title: The title is just one accent off from "狼牙棒" (Láng yá bàng), a type of spiked mace.
  • Secretly Dying: Mei Changsu is slowly dying of poison. He does his best to hide this, especially from Jingyan.
  • Spit Take: Xie Bi spits out his tea when Yujin says Nihuang likes him best.
  • Wuxia: Martial arts aren't the story's main focus, but Mei Changsu leads a martial arts alliance and the titular Langya List is a ranking of martial artists.
