A paranormal novel by Isobel Lynx, which follows the journey of Ian Donovan, who is a medium.
First installment in Medium Of Eidolon Falls series released on October 30th 2023.
The book's plot closely follows Five Stages of Grief concurrently with Ian’s road to accepting his mediumship.
- Ian starts the story with a Denial attitude regarding his gift and then falls into it further after the accident.
- Ian turns to Anger whenever the denial is challenged, which eventually leads to an Identity Breakdown.
- Once the truth is out, he tries to use his newfound powers to Bargain in an attempt to cheat Death.
- When that doesn’t work out, he falls into Depression (which Denial was protecting him from previously).
- The story ends on Acceptance of both death and his mediumship.
The book provides examples of:
- Astral Projection: Ian separates his soul from his body to travel to the In-Between by the means of a Spooky Séance.
- Bittersweet Ending and a "Ray of Hope" Ending: Ian doesn’t get any of the things he wanted. But at least now he knows what he is and is on his way to getting better.
- Blind Date: Ciara sets up Ian with Samantha.
- Dead All Along: Since we're in Ian's point of view, and ghosts look real to him, we see his mom acting alive, but then find out that it was all a show.
- Ghostly Goals: [[Ian's dad's]] goal is revenge against [[his sister]] for causing the drama that led to the accident.
- Good Parents: Ian’s dad is an exemplary good father. Ian’s mom is a sweatheart and he’s her Momma's Boy.
- Happily Married: Ian’s parents are the perfect loving couple.
- I See Dead People: Ian is a medium and can see ghosts.
- Lonely Rich Kid: Ian is born to a well-off family, has no close friends, and feels like an outsider.
- Love Hurts: Ian doesn’t take it well when Samantha challenges him and lashes out because he’s hurt.
- Made Myself Sad: Ian tries on Dad’s hat and tears up when he remembers him.
- Medicate the Medium: Like a typical special child, Ian was evaluated by a psychiatrist who only made things worse because All Therapists Are Muggles.
- Miss Swears-a-lot: Samantha has a potty mouth.
- Mood Whiplash: A romantic scene between Ian and Samantha flips upside down when Ian introduces her to his mom.
- No One Could Survive That!: the car accident that Ian survived.
- Our Ghosts Are Different: several ghosts make an appearance in the story as seen or described by Ian.
- Psychic Powers: Ian exhibits skills in mediumship, precognition, and Astral Projection.
- Reverse Relationship Reveal: Ciara insists that the ghost needed help moving on because she wasn't ready, but instead, Ian was the one that wasn’t ready to move on.
- Seers: Ian experiences precognition when he sees a lightning hit a tree in the first chapter. Then, he sees a creepy shadow around his dad. Both instances act as Foreshadowing.
- Small Towns: the fictional town of Eidolon Falls is a small valley town in Adirondacks where Everyone Went to School Together. Even though Nothing Exciting Ever Happens Here, it's a Supernatural Hotspot Town.
- Spooky Séance: Ian attempts to contact the spirit of his dad.
- Symbolism and a form of Seasonal Baggage: Mentions of winter repeated throughout the book represent grief and death while spring represents starting over and life.
- The Slacker: Samson is a washed out rocker wannabe who can’t hold a job and can be insensitive since he’s a Jerk with a Heart of Gold.
- Unhappy Medium: Ian’s life is negatively impacted by his abilities.
- Unreliable Narrator: since Ian is in denial about [[his mom]], any statement he makes about her or the accident is not necessarily true.
- Weirdness Censor: Ian is so in denial about his mom, he doesn't notice any of the clues that would tip off an ordinary person. Everyone but Ian knows that both of his parents are dead.
- Why Can't I Hate You?: Ian wants to hate Samantha but finds that he still likes her.
