Every Other Day is a 2012 teen Urban Fantasy novel narrated by Kali, a teenager who lives in The Unmasqued World and has powers that let her fight the world's many monsters. However, those powers only work every other day, and on an off-day, she finds herself in a Race Against the Clock to save a classmate from a deadly curse, only to wind up in danger from both human and unusually deadly supernatural forces herself after suceeding.

Tropes:

  • Alternate History: Charles Darwin discovered supernatural creatures during his studies, and as a result, the last two hundred years have been mostly the same except for how people know about dangerous monsters, use them in various wars, study them in school, and put them on the endangered species list.
  • Arbitrary Skepticism: Unmasqued World of dangerous monsters or not, nothing will get Elliot to accept that his sister Skylar is psychic.
  • Blonde, Brunette, Redhead: The three main female characters are brunette (Kali), blonde (Skylar), and red-haired (Bethany), respectively.
  • Designer Baby: Kali's powers come from experiments her scientist parents did to alter the human genome as they conceived her (although it was more of an abstract theory they didn't expect to work).
  • Disposable Vagrant: Monsters tend to be drawn to weak people with rotten sores and lots of grime or chemicals in their bloodstream, meaning they largely feed on poor people whom society doesn't feel obliged to protect.
  • Eating Optional: Kali's powers don't keep her from being able to eat, but she doesn't have to, so she rarely does.
  • Hunter of Monsters: When her powers are working, Kali goes out to fight dangerous beasts like hellhounds, dragons, and chupacabra, not as much out of a sense of duty, but because she feels physically compelled to, while her blood gives off a scent that makes them attack her as well. During the main events of the book, she finds herself forced to do this while her powers aren't working.
  • Lovable Alpha Bitch: Bethany is a snooty cheerleader who will occasionally engage in some Slut-Shaming, but when Kali saves her life at the cost of being endangered herself, Bethany insists on helping her for the rest of the book and gradually becomes nicer in other ways.
  • Motor Mouth: It takes Skylar about five seconds to say sixty words and she has little filter about speaking about anything that comes to mind.
  • Parental Favoritism: Bethany's father has spent years trying to wake up her brother from a coma, blames Bethany for not watching him enough when he got hurt, and is willing to sacrifice her life to get a cure for his son.
