Heartwarming / Charlie the Unicorn

Go To

  • Charlie being crowned Banana King in episode 2, if only for the one and only time he smiles in the entire series.
  • The Starfish's Heroic Sacrifice at the end of Episode 4. Turns out he really does love Charlie.
    • Charlie even seems to return the feeling a little, at least platonically. It's telling that when Starfish returns in the Grand Finale to grant Charlie magical artifacts that can help him out, Charlie speaks to him in a genuinely cordial manner and the first time around, even sounds happy to see him. There's even a hint of fondness in his "Goodbye, Starfish" when the Starfish departs for the second time.
  • The bittersweet montage in the finale showcasing all the locations of the show — all falling into states of disrepair now that their creators are gone. There is a genuine peaceful, albeit melancholic tone to it all.
  • As Norwell sings his sad elegy about the massacre of the Tutelary Weasels, his husband the coat breaks in with a rap song about how hot he thinks Norwell is. This seems to comfort Norwell somewhat, and he even manages a brief smile.
  • The Grand Finale was dedicated to Jason Steele's deceased cat Luca. Listening to some of the lyrics to "Temple of the Cat", it's hard not to see it as a bit of a tribute to Luca, for example:
The Cat: This is the Temple of the Cat and we're glad you found your way!
This is the Temple of the Cat and we hope that you can stay!
Here at the Temple of the Cat you will always have a home!
Here at the Temple of the Cat you will never be alone!
  • Word of God has stated that even if most life on the planet has been wiped out (not counting plant life), Charlie will eventually find other survivors.
  • After being Surrounded by Idiots with no one helping them except Starfish for thousands of years, Nyx is finally able to pass on to the afterlife thanks to Charlie.
  • Charlie hates Pink and Blue for good reason, but he manages to show distressed empathy at them actually being reanimated corpses of two unicorns who died years ago.
  • Perfect Husbands, a spinoff of Charlie the Unicorn, features some sweet moments due to the Happily Married nature of Norwell and The Coat's relationship.
    • In the first episode, Norwell asks Coat about his father (as Coat's father is mentioned to have been killed after Magic City: City of Magic was destroyed). Coat tells Norwell that he thinks his father would've liked him, since he was fond of music and "weird little guys". Norwell smiles at this.
    • In Perfect Husbands (Episode 2) Norwell and Coat find a gigantic cave underneath their house. When we see them on two perilous rock ledges in the next scene, they mention "making out a bunch" when they first went down into the cave. It's nice to see that a couple can still passionately canoodle in spontaneous places after untold decades of marriage.
