Gameplay And Story Segregation / JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: All Star Battle

Go To

Due to its nature as a fighting game, there are many moments in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: All Star Battle where canon is ignored for balancing purposes.

  • Obviously, only Stands can hurt other Stands, but that rule has been chucked out the window for gameplay purposes. While there might be a justification in Hamon users being able to hurt them, since, early in Part 3, it was theorized that Stands were a ghostly form of Hamon, Stroheim, and Speedwagon, who possess no supernatural abilities of any kind, can tangle with Stand users and even win. Dio Brando and the Pillar Men also don't seem to have any abilities that could hurt a Stand.
  • While Speedwagon's original hat is part of his moveset and can be selected as an alternate outfit, his default appearance has him wearing Baron Zeppeli's hat, which could not be used as a weapon.
  • Lisa Lisa and Kars both use the Red Stone of Aja as part of their movesets, despite the story of Battle Tendency having them fight for ownership of it due to being one of a kind.
  • Stroheim's Rocket Punch automatically returns to his wrist after each use, unlike canon. The same goes for Silver Chariot's rapier projectile.
  • Esidisi is shown to be immune to fire in canon, and logically should be immune to freezing as well thanks to his boiling body temperature. He's immune to neither in the game.
  • Despite being among the most physically resilient characters in canon, the Pillar Men, both versions of Dio, and Vanilla Ice have relatively low health in the game. This is meant to balance them out, since they can regenerate their own HP.
  • Wamuu's Atmospheric Rift is an attack so powerful that it will literally rip him apart as he uses it, so he only reserves it when there's no other option. In the game, it serves as his GHA, and it doesn't seem to have any physical toll on him.
  • In canon, Ultimate Kars is only demonstrated to be hurt by temperatures so extreme that no living thing can withstand them (courtesy of magma and outer space). Obviously, that would make him too overpowered, so in the game, he can still be hurt by punches and kicks.
  • The Fool is a bound-type Stand, so hitting it does not damage Iggy at all in canon. In the game, however, hitting The Fool does damage Iggy.
  • In canon, The Fool is near-useless in most situations because it requires existing sand in order to work, which is why Iggy was brought to Egypt, since sand is everywhere in the country. However, Iggy can still use The Fool in-game in areas where there would logically be no sand, such as Dio's Castle, Morioh Town, or Naples Train Station.
  • Certain attacks can reflect Hol Horse's bullets back at him, even though they are part of his Stand and he controls their trajectory. Hol Horse being shot by his own bullets did canonically occur, but only when 1) Enya forcibly turned his hand towards himself and squeezed Emperor's trigger, and 2) Hol Horse was not paying attention and did not see the bullets coming at his face until it was too late to stop them.
  • Hol Horse has J. Geil helping him with Hanged Man. Canonically, Hanged Man only manifests as a reflection, but in the game, it can pop out of reflective surfaces with a fully 3-dimensional body, making it similar to Illuso's Man in the Mirror.
  • Cream has very little stamina in the game and can only be used in short bursts, despite having no such weakness in canon. This is for balancing purposes, as Vanilla Ice would be too powerful otherwise.
  • In the original, Senator Phillips will still drive his limousine through the El Cairo City stage even if DIO is one of the ones fighting, and therefore unable to be in the car threatening him. This is no longer the case in All Star Battle R.
  • Josuke will be able to insult his own hair during a Mirror Match, even though it doesn't make much sense for him to do so.
  • Kosaku!Kira's bubble bombs are easily popped by other projectiles, even though they don't easily pop in canon.
  • In canon, Giorno absolutely flattens Diavolo like a poker chip upon gaining Gold Experience Requiem. In ASB Mode, where the two fight again in a boss battle, it's very possible for Diavolo to win the fight this time around. Moreover, while Giorno is implied to have GER forever, it's only a brief power-up in the game, most likely for balancing purposes.
  • In R, The Grateful Dead is capable of aging up vampires and Pillar Men, even though they logically should be immune to its effects, as well as Ghiaccio, who should be able to use his Stand to No-Sell the aging effect, since it's useless in low temperatures (a few ice cubes are able to stop the effect in canon).
  • Also in R, Risotto's Iron Deficiency effect really should affect Diego even in dinosaur form. Altered biology or not, he still needs to breathe. And yet, he is not affected by it.
  • In an in-game example, in R, even if F.F. is directly fighting Weather Report, they're still able to use their HHA, where they call Weather Report over a walkie-talkie to ask for rain.
  • In R, Heavy Weather affects both versions of Pucci, even though Whitesnake was shown to be able to counter it in canon. In fairness though, Pucci had to make a conscious effort to blind himself and counter it.
  • Enrico Pucci (Final) can still throw command discs even after evolving his Stand into C-Moon and Made In Heaven. There is no indication that either C-Moon or Made In Heaven retained the power to create command discs in canon.
  • In the manga, while Johnny himself isn't able to Move in the Frozen Time, Tusk Act 4 is, due to being based on the infinite energy of the Golden Spin. For balancing reasons, this is not the case during gameplay.
  • In a Mirror Match between two Funny Valentines, if one Valentine gets hit with the other's GHA, then that Valentine will end up colliding with their alternate universe self, despite Valentine in the actual series being immune to the death-by-fusion effect that Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap causes and being able to team up with his alternate universe selves.
  • Pitting Diego up against Alternate World Diego causes no repercussions, when in canon, the mere presence of Diego's deceased, decapitated head was enough for Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap's death-by-fusion effect to kick in, instantly killing Alternate World Diego.
  • In canon, D4C Love Train makes Funny Valentine invulnerable to all threats. In-game, it only makes him immune to projectiles, lest he be too broken.
  • Sheer Heart Attack is a lot faster in the game than portrayed in canon. Furthermore, it's capable of ramming a person straight into the air during Kira's GHA, an ability it was not shown to have previously.
  • Vanilla Ice has a command grab where he sucks the life out of the opponent in typical vampire fashion, even though in canon he doesn't even realize he's a vampire until Polnareff stabs him.
  • Wonder of U cannot be harmed through traditional means in canon, as any attempts to pursue, or even think about it, will trigger calamity to befall on the pursuer, with Josuke 8's bubbles being the only means to damage it. In-game, however, Wonder of U can be fought against like any other fighter and even be affected by other abilities such as Heavy Weather or Pucci's HHA.
  • Heavy Weather turns Wonder of U into a snail, even though Stands weren't affected by it in the story.
