    Main Story

Chapter 1

  • Matthew and A's banter gets off to a great start after the first battle as we get a look at their dynamic.
    Matthew: Less of the lectures!
A: The word you should've used is "fewer". Grammar matters.
  • In another of many instances of snark, A remarks on Matthew's sleeping habits.
A: Sleeping on the ground... I've never seen anyone make it look quite so comfortable. I worry.
  • How does Matthew interrupt the battle between Glimmer and Nikol? Pick Glimmer up by the back of her outfit like a kitten by the scruff of the neck and throw her at Nikol. Followed up later by him simply pulling off Nikol's backpack to disarm him and then sitting on it. Throughout he regards these experienced late-term soldiers as "just kids."
  • Matthew and A's reaction to learning they're being called "Moebius Hunters".
Matthew: "Moebius Hunter"? You what? (to A) Wait, is that what they call us these days?
A: No idea. I don't recall "hunting" any. Just cleaning up the mess you always end up making. Bailing you out of trouble.
    Matthew: ...Exactly.
  • After the duel with Moebius R and Q, the scene cuts to Glimmer and Nikol once again desperately trying to murder each other (made more darkly comedic by Glimmer telling Nikol to hold still so she can kill him). Then the camera pans over to Matthew and A, returning from foraging, with completely unamused looks on their faces. They look like parents who went out grocery shopping to come back to see the kids arguing again.
    A: Phenomenal...
Matthew: There we go, what'd I tell you? One of us should have watched 'em.
A: You also told me you wanted us to secure as much food as possible.
  • Glimmer's methods of petty rebellion against her situation include refusing to eat the food Matthew offers. Nikol, on the other hand, has no such reservations and digs right in.

Chapter 2

  • In the flashback, the kids make Na'el play songs for them. When she asks for suggestions, they start shouting the names of songs from the games. Such as "Gaur Plains," "The Tomorrow With You," and "Bringer of Chaos Ultimate."
    • For players of 2 who interacted with the broken pipe organ in Elysium as Zeke, this is extra funny, as he laments he can't play "Zekenator's Fifth," implying he's a composer on top of everything else. Combine that with this scene in Future Redeemed and it's quite possible Zeke von Genbu, Bringer of Chaos composed his own theme song.
    • For added hilarity, imagine Zeke or Pandoria carrying around a portable speaker in case they bump into Rex and co.
  • It takes a while for Matthew to convince Nikol to stop calling him "sir."
  • A and Matthew continue to trade semi-playful jabs at each other, including A insulting Matthew's hair upkeep and Matthew sarcastically praising A's intellect.
  • Glimmer's initial description of the people who destroyed Gamma's Flame Clock? "Weirdos. Two of them." The way she says it just oozes teenage grumpiness.
  • Glimmer's description of Matthew includes remarking that he didn't seem too bright, echoing when she called him a goon during their first meeting.

Chapter 3

  • Recalling how Matthew stated being in the same situation made him and Nikol friends, Nikol remarks that the day he and Glimmer were freed from their Flame Clocks was also the day they became friends. Glimmer is... not so sure about that description.
    Glimmer: You're an idiot. Wow.
  • Matthew proudly declaring "this is progress," after getting insulted by Glimmer again, as she is at least talking to him more now. She can only click her tongue in annoyance.

Chapter 4

  • Rex briefly pretends he got a cracked rib in his and Shulk's test battle against Glimmer and Nikol, just so he can watch his daughter get flustered with concern for him.
    • The way Shulk just shakes his head with a smile hints that Rex has often made jokes like this and he's just used to it by now.
    • Nikol also can't help but laugh, though he bashfully turns away from Glimmer to avoid her Death Glare.
  • When the party first enters the Black Mountains, they're in the middle of a conversation. Glimmer is flabbergasted to discover that Matthew never knew who A was. A showed up after the destruction of the City, Matthew assumed they were another survivor, and never asked any questions.
    • What makes the above more funny is that A could very easily be mistaken for a Consul, thanks to their outfit and One-Letter Name To make it worse… . Idiot Hero, thy name is Matthew.

Chapter 5

  • After Matthew asks if Klaus' world existed prior to Alrest and Bionis, Rex says "The lad's got brawn and brains." He praises Matthew's intelligence even though all he did was properly understand what Shulk just said. The bar is embarrasingly low.
  • The fact that many players didn't hear the first half of Matthew and Na'el's conversation simply because they were too busy paying attention to the radio.
  • Matthew calling Alpha "Mr. Alpha, sir" after rescuing Na'el.
  • In the middle of a tense, dramatic scene, it is revealed that Matthew's Blades have Pneuma's Core Crystal—an incredibly important moment with staggering implications for both this story and the main game. N promptly calls them the "Fists of the End," thereby proving that he's still terrible at naming things.

    Battle Quotes
  • In a classic case of Mondegreen, many players mistook Matthew's line of "Outta my face!" as "Ow, my face!"
  • One of Matthew's lines is "I'm feeling full of beans!" This one was so absurd that everyone assumed it was Mondegreen, but no, that's the actual line. It was memed immediately.
  • Rex continues his "come on, praise us some more," post-battle line from 2 but with his now husky voice, it ends up sounding quite different.

    Camp Scenes
  • Matthew and A get one featuring A repeatedly trying to adjust/perfect Matthew's punching form, to their increasing frustration.
  • Glimmer and Rex got a scene where Glimmer is writing in her notebook while Rex is sitting beside and staring at her, only for him to awkwardly look the other way when Glimmer notices him.
  • When Shulk does the dishes, he just holds the plate in his organic hand as if he's worried about breaking it with his mechanical one.
  • Rex tries to peak in Glimmer's journal on his blind spot, only to turn around when she notices him.

    Affinity Scenes
  • At the Affinity Scene overlooking the Ferronis Wreckage, while the party discusses the Ferronises, Shulk laments that the wreckage is too big to be taken back to Colony 9 for analysis, to Nikol's agreement, Rex's amusement, and Matthew's exasperation.
Rex: Uh-oh. Here comes Shulk's fatal weakness...
  • During the one at Dunban's former house, Shulk gives an embarrassed Mathematician's Answer as to whether Dunban was Shulk's mentor or brother-in-law, much to Matthew's confusion.
    • Even better, Matthew is confused despite being one of the party members who does know what families are. Glimmer and Nikol being lost would be understandable, having just been released from the Flame Clock, but Matthew....
  • In one scene, Shulk makes mention of the infamous giant Antol Clifftop Bayern that attacked his party at Daksha Shrine when the party comes across the location in their travels and mentions he's still traumatized, all while Shulk's memetic line gets subverted.
Nikol: ...Yeah, I'm not really feeling it.
    Shulk: No, neither was I.
    • In addition, that location again has players ambushed by another Unique Monster, though a Gogol one this time around
  • During an Affinity Scene on Prison Island, the party is overlooking the Urayan mountains, which most of them think are just an ordinary set of mountains - save for Rex. Rex proceeds to reminisce about he was once swallowed up by Uraya, only for Glimmer to ask if he's having memory issues and for Matthew to compliment him on his "joke".

    Side Quests
  • "Linka's Birthday" is all about, you guessed it, Linka's birthday. Specifically, Rex needs to hunt down a rare monster to make Linka's favorite meal that her parents (implied to be Zeke and Pandoria) had described to him once. First off, he does a terrible job of convincing her to walk off so he can talk to the rest of the party about it (Panacea takes pity on him and pulls Linka away). Then, when she comes back, he declares that they have to go to Raguel Lake, to her confusion, and then battle a giant octopus-like monster for its flesh. And once the meal is made, it turns out monster tentacles are not even an ingredient (just regular-sized octopus is), and Zeke had simply exaggerated his description without Rex realizing it.
  • "Snow Man's Treasure" introduces us to the Liberator Saomi, Linka's self-proclaimed best friend. While not voiced, practically every other line from her may elicit a giggle due to her silly/energetic dialog, bold personality, and sheer enthusiasm for adventure no matter how ill-conceived her plans may be. Her blatant reliance on the party to get anything done is the cherry on top.
Saomi: Have at 'em, o esteemed authority figures!
    Linka: You really are incorrigible...
Rex: It's all right. Could tell where this was going from a ways off.
    • Speaking of Saomi, one of her lines has her going "This is an honest-to-goodness, bona fide treasure map, or I'm a Gogol's Vuaga!" An incredibly obscure reference to a bug in which the Gogol's Vuaga drop item was unobtainable at launch, making a certain Collectapedia quest impossible to complete and hilarious on a meta level.
  • One sidequest features two children apprenticing at Colony 9's general store by sorting produce. You have to answer multiple choice questions on which collectible falls into which category, all while the battle music plays.
  • "A Melody Sustained" is a mostly heartwarming quest of Glimmer taking an interest in using music outside of battle, but then she finds out that getting the best strings for her newfound famous lute will mean using a certain monster's entrails as material. Turns out while she has slain plenty of enemies in combat, she can't handle the kind of gore needed for such a dissection. She squeamishly refuses to commit to even doing the quest, and once it is done Rex has to step up and cut out the necessary parts from the monster while Glimmer (and Nikol) turn away and close their eyes.

Other

  • In Colony 9, you can encounter two NPCs talking about Shulk and Rex, and MonolithSoft seems to be taking the piss out of their games' Fandom Rivalry.
"Hey, for argument's sake, who's you reckon would win in a fight between Shulk and Rex?"
"Oi, ixnay on that kinda chatter! That's how you end up with drunken brawls between rival fans..."
  • One of the voice clips if you jump on an Ether slide as Rex is a drawn-out "WHEEEEEEEEEEEE". Even better, his ridiculously deep voice cracks midway through it.
  • After repairing the old Ether Furnace in Colony 9, we get a humorous Continuity Nod to the first game's infamous Gem Crafting dialogue:
Rex: To me, this was always just junk, but you actually fixed it. Nice!
Shulk: Hah, "To me!"... I miss those days sometimes.
  • The fact that, as the ultimate culmination of the "Riku where he shouldn't be" joke, Riku turned out to be a comrade of the Founders as well as the Seventh Founder himself.
  • Towards the end of the DLC, when talking to Matthew's friend Dillon, he lets slip that Mickey, another NPC and friend of Matthew, has a thing for Na'el. This bothers Matthew greatly. Even funnier, if you go to talk to Mickey after this, Matthew tells an understandably nervous Mickey that after they were going to have a 'chat' after dealing with Alpha.
