In an anime only scene from Episode 11, Machi wants Ayane to bring her some ice. So she communicates that using a Voodoo Doll and morse code. Poor Ayane does manage to understand it perfectly as she's yelping and squirming in pain. Then right after that Machi walks over the short distance to confirm she got it.
Misaki and Suzu are looking for Shima-Tora's scarf and encounters Genjuumaru, a tanuki that even Machi has trouble dealing with. Misaki jumps at it and easily captures it because it's so cute. Then aside from one short lived moment of escape in which Misaki easily tracks it and sees through its disguise, it's in her arms for the rest of the story, suffers through its own traps as the girls go through them, and she's looking forward to taking it home.
She really meant it when she said she will take it home. The next morning it wakes up in Suzu's house having failed to escape even while Misaki was sleeping. Eventually she lets it go when it persuades her to be a kind friend. She still follows it throughout the island with her "youkai radar" senses. Eventually even she starts to feel guilty because she wants to love animals, not hurt them. But at least Machi is pleased to see it suffer.
