Uchu Sentai Kyuranger vs. Space Squad is a crossover between Uchu Sentai Kyuranger and the Space Squad franchise of films, itself a crossover between the Super Sentai and Metal Heroes franchises. It was released in Japan on June 30, 2018.

Four years after the Space Shogunate Jark Matter's defeat, the universe of the Kyurangers is back under the control of the Space Federation and still working to rebuild. In the midst of this, a set of Neo Kyutama are stolen by none other than Hammie of the Kyurangers. Hammie is working for Demost, an Apostle of the Genmakuu cult pursued into the World of Kyuranger by Space Squad members Gavan and Shaider, and her seeming turn has her friends split down the middle.

Tropes

  • Action Prologue: The film opens with Shaider and Jiraiya attempting to apprehend Demost of the Genmakuu, who flees to the Kyuranger universe with Shaider in pursuit.
  • Actor Allusion: When Geki says Space Squad needs to team up with a rescue force, there is a cut to Shu saying "Rescue?" This is a reference to Hiroaki Iwanaga, Shu's actor, who previously portrayed Captain Eiji Ishiguro/R5 in Tomica Hero Rescue Force in 2008.
  • Back from the Dead: Using the Neo Kyutama, Demost brings back four Super Sentai villains, namely Mele, Juzo Fuwa, Basco ta Jolokia and Escape.
  • Big Bad: Space Ninja Demost, who coerced Hammie into stealing the Neo Kyutama and plots to conquer the World of Kyuranger.
  • Borrowed Catchphrase: Upon learning that Demost has escaped to another universe (followed by Shaider), Geki figures it is the one he is already familiar with (Kyuranger) and so enthusiastically repeats Hammie's "Kitakore!" and Lucky's "Yossha Lucky!"
  • The Cameo: Akio Otsuka and Hiroshi Kamiya, who voice Champ and Shou Ronpo respectively, cameo as diners at Grazie! in The Stinger.
  • Casting Gag: Satomi Hirose, known for her role as Tsuruhime (Ninja White) in Ninja Sentai Kakuranger, plays Tsurugiku, Hammie's shinobi mentor.
  • Defeat Equals Explosion: A toku staple. Demost (all three of him) explodes when he is defeated. However, he survives the ordeal and so is arrested for his crimes. Averted for the Super Sentai villains, who simply fade away as a result of Demost's defeat, leaving behind their Neo Kyutamas as their prolonged lives can no longer be sustained.
  • Distant Sequel: This film takes place four years following the finale of Kyuranger; in real time it was released just short of five months after. This is especially jarring due to the presence of Kotaro Sakuma (Shota Yamaguchi), who has hardly grown visibly despite being played by an actor in his early teens.
  • Dual Wielding: Basco notably wields both his CariBlade and CariBlaster in battle against Kajiki Yellow and Koguma Skyblue. Back in Gokaiger, Basco only used both his weapons for his final battle with Captain Marvelous.
  • Expy: As is clear when he is seen standing alongside Space Sheriff Gavan and Space Sheriff Shaider, the replacement Jiraiya is also a replacement for the new Space Sheriff Sharivan, as actor Riki Miura retired from the entertainment industry.
  • The Faceless: Portrayed by voice actor Kenji Akabane, Touma Amagi does not appear outside of his Jiraiya Suit.
  • Good vs. Good: A downplayed conflict, likened by director Koichi Sakamoto to Captain America: Civil War, arises as a result of Demost forcing Hammie (Chameleon Green) into stealing the Neo Kyutama, making her a wanted criminal in the Space Federation and splitting the Kyurangers into two teams as they disagree over how to approach her, note the conflict is downplayed as both sides have good intentions for her. One consists of Hammie herself and her supporters, Lucky (Shishi Red), Garu (Ookami Blue), Champ (Oushi Black), Spada (Kajiki Yellow) and Kotaro Sakuma (Koguma Skyblue) against the team led by Tsurugi Ohtori (Houou Soldier) who, motivated by concern for both Hammie and the galaxy, intend to take her into custody, which also includes Stinger (Sasori Orange), Balance (Tenbin Gold), Naga Ray (Hebitsukai Silver) and Raptor 283 (Washi Pink). Shou (Ryu Commander) is the only Kyuranger does not participate in the fight which is ultimately broken up by the Space Sheriffs.
  • Kill and Replace: Demost kills and disguises himself as Kimiko Naruse, Tsurugi's Presidential assistant.
  • Legacy Character: This film introduces Touma Amagi, 36th head of the Togakure Clan and current wielder of the Sekai Ninja Jiraiya armor who is serving as a member of Space Squad. He is the successor of Toha Yamaji, The Hero in Sekai Ninja Sen Jiraiya who most recently returned in Shuriken Sentai Ninninger.
  • Mooks: Each of the revived Super Sentai villains are accompanied by a pack of the mooks from their respective series: Mele has the Rinjuken's Rinshi, Juzo has the Nanashi of the Gedoushu, Basco has Zangyack's Gormin Sailors, and Escape has Vaglass' Buglars.
  • Multiversal Conqueror: Demost travels from the Space Squad universe to that of Kyuranger, intent on conquering it on behalf of the Genmakuu.
  • Red Herring: At first, it seems like Tsurugi’s male Jerkass assistant is a disguise for Demost. But then it turns out to be the female assistant who openly supported the Kyurangers.
  • Self-Duplication: Demost splits into three to fight the Kyurangers and the Space Sheriffs.
  • Sequel Hook: The next installment of Space Squad is set up in The Stinger which establishes that Winspector's Fire, an ideal candidate to put out the fires caused by the Genmakuu, is still active.
  • Spanner in the Works: Demost's plot is unraveled because Shu smelled the same perfume on Kimiko and Naga, who Demost had just fought, leading him and Geki to figure out that the former was really Demost in disguise.
  • The Stinger: This film has two. A comedic mid-credits scene blends The Cameo with Actor Allusion as Luka Millfy (Mao Ichimichi) pinches a macaroon from Raptor (voiced by Mao Ichimichi) and Hammie's table at Spada's restaurant. Then a post-credits scene provides a Sequel Hook for the next Space Squad, with Touma making Geki and Shu aware that Genmakuu are continuing to commit atrocities in the form of arson. Fortunately, though the Space Squad do not yet realise it, there is a hero who deals with that.
  • Versus Title: Ironically, the conflict is amongst the Kyurangers themselves, though the Space Sheriffs are forced to physically intervene.
