Shake, Rattle & Roll Extreme is a 2023 Filipino horror anthology film released by Regal Entertainment. It is the 16th installment of the Shake, Rattle & Roll franchise and its second film since 1997's Shake, Rattle & Roll VI to not be a part of the Metro Manila Film Festival lineup.

Extreme contains three "episodes": Glitch, Mukbang, and Rage.

  • Glitch (starring Iza Calzado): This episode features Iza Calzado as a single mother whose lonely, iPad-obsessed daughter Lyka (child actress Jewel Milag) becomes "friends" with a bloodthirsty demon.
  • Mukbang (starring Jane Oineza, alongside an Ensemble Cast): This episode follows a group of influencers, including Former Child Star-turned-influencer Vee, spending a night with up-and-coming content creators who turn out to have an... unusual appetite.
  • Rage (starring Jane De Leon): A young woman, Trina (de Leon), goes on a road trip with her boyfriend Moze (Paulo Gumabao). A meteor shower interrupts their fun, with virus-infected meteorites transforming innocent townsfolk into rage-filled zombies.

Shake, Rattle & Roll Extreme is available worldwide on Netflix with English subtitles. BEWARE OF SPOILERS.

Shake, Rattle & Roll Extreme contains examples of the following tropes:

    As a whole

    Glitch

  • Faux Affably Evil: The film's villain, Gary the Goat, presents himself as a soft-spoken friend to Lyka. But when he's attacking people, he is animalistic and feral, not showing any friendliness or even humanity.
  • Lost in Translation: The official English subtitles on Netflix translate "Ate" (the term of address that the maid, Hasmine, uses towards her employer, Ingrid) as "Ma'am." It actually means big sister, and if you speak Tagalog, you'll understand that this shows how nice Ingrid is, letting her maid address her with a familial and friendly term rather than just Ma'am.

    Mukbang

  • invokedAccidental Innuendo: In-universe. The others ask Beyonce (yes, that's really his name) what the weirdest thing he's ever eaten was, and he responds that "masarap naman kayong lahat" (you're all delicious). At this point, the real Beyonce is gone, replaced by a human-eating creature within his body, but of course it just sounds like he's calling everyone else sexy. This leads to riotous laughter.
  • Affably Evil: Even after she's revealed to be a monster too, Raye still acts and talks very sweetly, unlike the other "Kauri" (monsters).
  • Ambiguous Gender: Given that the Kauri switch from body to body regardless of gender, it's unknown what their real genders are, if they have any at all. Mang Isko, an elderly man, turns out to be a Kauri, and he doesn't hesitate to take over a young woman's body in the ending.
  • Asshole Victim: Most of the influencers are this, being spoiled, self-obsessed narcissists. Ashley is a notable example. She dies shortly after betraying Adelle so she can escape, and the Kauri mock her shallowness before killing her.
  • Beauty Is Bad: Robin and Raye are a physically attractive young couple who own a beautiful mansion, and that's why the other influencers are willing to spend the night with them despite their low follower count. They turn out to be ancient creatures who have taken over these young, attractive bodies, and they're voracious for human meat. In the ending, the creatures have taken over almost all of the main cast's bodies, with "Mang Isko" switching from a frail, elderly man's body to the young, gorgeous Vee's body.
  • Defiant to the End: Chef Kino refuses to be the Kauri's personal chef when they capture him in the ending. It's subverted, though, when they point out they'll win regardless and just eat him if he refuses, so he's forced to agree to be their chef.
  • Did You Just Flip Off Cthulhu?: Adelle's first reaction when he sees a Kauri in monster form for the first time is to say that he's definitely not gonna endorse a beauty product from someone so scary-looking.
  • Extremely Short Timespan: Everything in Mukbang happens over the course of one day, though there is a brief epilogue showing how the Kauri steadily become an Internet sensation.
  • Final Girl: Parodied. Vee ticks all the boxes of a classic Final Girl, but she is unceremoniously killed at the end. In fact, it's the older, more cynical Chef Kino who ends up as the film's sole survivor, forced to work for the Kauri as their personal chef.
  • Good Is Not Nice: Chef Kino is a good guy, one of the most genuinely good-hearted among the influencers, but he's more cynical than the others.
  • I'm a Humanitarian: Played with for the Kauri, because they inhabit stolen human bodies but clearly aren't really human. On the othr hand, this is played straight when the Kauri feed the still-human influencers Hannah and Beyonce's flesh, without them knowing that they're eating human meat. Mang Isko also forces poor Ashley to eat human entrails raw.
  • It's Personal: Chef Kino declares that it's time for him to get violent when he finds out that the Kauri have killed his best friend, Isaac.
  • Resigned to the Call: Inverted with Chef Kino. He's the only one left alive and human in the ending. The Kauri tell him that they want him to be their new personal chef. He tells them he doesn't want to work for them, but they point out that they'll just eat him like the others if he refuses. So he becomes their personal servant — either way, the Kauri were going to win, so he might as well stay alive, right?
  • Really 700 Years Old: Everyone who has been "transformed" (had their bodies stolen by the Kauri) is this. The Kauri who took over Beyonce states that it was born during the Philippines' Spanish colonial era (1565 to 1898).
  • Rich Bitch: Ashley is a sheltered rich girl who mistreats Hannah, her assistant. This comes back to bite her in the ass when the Kauri mock her snottiness right before killing her.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Beyonce and Adelle are named after... well, BeyoncĂ© and Adele. These are clearly not their birth names, but their chosen names (both of them are queer guys, and it's a common practice in the Philippines for feminine queer guys to christen themselves with girlier names).
    • Adelle calls the red-haired Ashley The Little Mermaid.
  • Stalker without a Crush: Robin appears to be infatuated with Vee, which makes her uncomfortable. Actually, he's just a member of a monster clan that wants to steal young, healthy bodies. He outright mocks the fact that Vee thought he was attracted to her before the Kauri kill her.
