We'll find a way.

Marte Um (Mars One, in English) is a Brazilian movie released in 2022 about a suburban family of four: a mom (Tércia) who deals with the feeling she's been cursed, a father (Wellington) who's been sober for four years now and loves soccer, a daughter (Eunice) who wants to find herself as an adult and finally, the youngest son (Deivinho), who dreams of being an astrophysicist and participate in the Mars One space mission.

The movie, set on the cities of Belo Horizonte and Contagem, in Minas Gerais, deals with the trials and delights of this family.

Marte Um shows these tropes:

  • 20 Minutes into the Past: The movie got released during 2022 in Brazil, but is set during 2018 (when it was shot) and 2019.
  • Academic Athlete: Deivinho likes to play soccer (although he doesn't want to work as a player) and likes science classes, to the point of wanting to be a scientist in the future.
  • The Ace: Gerson, Deivinho's grandfather on his dad's side, could sing, play the trombone, speak English (self taught) and build things out of everyday items (as he gifted Deivinho's mother with a self made sewing machine on her wedding day).
  • Affectionate Nickname: Deivid is frequently called Deivinho.
    • Nina for Eunice.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Deivinho breaks his leg and can't attend the tryouts for Cruzeiro nor travel to see the Neil deGrasse Tyson presentation, Wellington loses his job and relapses, straining his relationship with Tércia and Eunice. On the other side, Wellington immediately goes to the Alcoholics Anonymous the next day, Tércia's "curse" ends, Eunice gets to live with her girlfriend, her relationship with her father is on the mend and Deivinho gets to show the homemade telescope he built to his family, who now fully support his dream.
  • Black and Nerdy: Deivinho, who wants to be an astrophysicist and go to Mars one day.
    • Eunice also, to a lesser extent, as she studies Law in the Federal University of Minas Gerais and worries about social justice discussions.
  • Cool Big Sis: Eunice is this to Deivinho, supporting him in his goals, encouraging him to tell their father the truth and even paying for his ticket to Neil deGrasse's presentation.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble: Tércia is Sanguine, Deivinho is Phlegmatic, Eunice is Melancholic and Wellington is Choleric.
  • Homemade Inventions: Deivinho aims to build a telescope out of plastic tubes, some old lenses and a stand made with plastic bottles and wooden broomsticks. He succeeds, and shows it to his whole family.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Wellington says Eunice spends way too much time in the bathroom (raising the light bill) caring about her hair. Tércia implies he did the same back in the day.
  • Kitchen Sink Drama: Tércia and Wellington's plots have shades of this, dealing with work relations and underpayment in Brazil.
  • Lipstick Lesbian: Both Eunice and her girlfriend, Joana.
  • Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane: Tércia believes that after being pranked on the cafeteria she is cursed and brings misfortune to everyone on her way. Sure, a lot of bad things start happening to those around her, but most of them could have been explained by simple accidents/bad decisions. Only after she beats up the prank actor (while he was doing another stunt) and finds out the bus she would be taking for the day (which she gave up on after finding out about Deivinho's accident) crashed with another one and killed all people inside, she believes her curse has been lifted.
  • Open-Minded Parent: Joana's parents are openly supportive of their daughter's date and offer to be guarantors for their apartment.
    • Although off to a bad start, Eunice's parents seem on their way to be more supportive of her in the ending.
  • Opposing Sports Team: Atlético Mineiro to Cruzeiro (the family's favorite soccer team, that rivalry is Serious Business in Minas Gerais). When Joana arrives at the Martins' home, she finds herself being the only Atlético fan (which also heavily angers Wellington along with finding out she's his Eunice's girlfriend when Atlético wins that match).
  • Power Trio: Deivinho, Tiago and Ariel, the kids he's friends with. They can be considered a Balance, Speed, Strength Trio also (Deivinho as the balance, Ariel as the speed and Tiago as the strength).
  • Queer Romance: Between Eunice and Joana.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Tércia loves cares for her kids and works hard to support them (like Wellington), while also respecting their boundaries and likes (unlike him, at first).
  • Sports Dad: Wellington. He seriously wants his son to break out as a professional soccer player, while ignoring that his son doesn't want to do it.
