Mako is an Egyptian Adventure Thriller movie by Mohamed Hesham El-Rashidy.
Rana Baghat (Basma) is a woman who's dream since she was 10 was to win a Documentary film award. When it seemed like she finally achieved her dream, she's embarrassed to find that that year's award was actually for her husband, Sherif Nahy (Nicolas Mouawad). Undeterred, however, she sets out to make another movie that she hopes will land her that trophy next year.
While the folks at Rana's company are brainstorming ideas for their next film, new hire Gharam (Nahed El Sebaï) makes her pitch: back in 1991, a ship carrying 600 people known as the Salem Express was sunk by a storm, which killed 40 of the people on board. Some time later, a trio of divers went to the ship and stole the valuables left behind from the dead on board. Rana accepts the idea and they head to the spot out in the sea where Rana hopes to make what will finally net her that trophy.
What none of them know, however, was that some fishermen were chumming in the area earlier. And now a Mako Shark is swimming about.
The film was released on September 1st, 2021.
Mako contains examples of:
- Award Show: Happens at the start of the movie, with Rana and Sherif in attendance.
- Bittersweet Ending: Rana's documentary about the crew's experience with the Mako shark wins her the trophy she's wanted all movie, but she feels she shouldn't accept it over the fact that five people, her husband included, all died.
- Dwindling Party: Of the eight film crew members the movie starts with, there are only three who survive.
- Flashback: We see one of Gharam leaving her baby sister in their room on the Salem Express while it was sinking.
- Good-Times Montage: We see the crew partying the day and night before setting out to start filming at the wreck site of the ship.
- Harpoon Gun: Rana has two of her crew members shoot the shark with these in a hallucination she was having while underwater.
- Help, I'm Stuck!: Sherif ends up with one of his legs stuck under a rusted, heavy door. He remains there for the rest of the movie, and he even dies there.
- Instant Humiliation: Just Add YouTube!: Rana tripping on the steps at the award show was recorded by someone and went viral. It's even shown on a talk show that's hosted by a puppet.
- It's All My Fault: Gharam feels like it's her fault her baby sibling drowned when the Salem Express sank in that storm. She practically breaks down about it late in the movie.
- One-Word Title: Mako, of course.
- Robbing the Dead: Some scuba divers stole valuables from the dead bodies on board the Salem Express some time ago. We even see one of them remove a valuable from a dead body's hand.
- Shower of Angst: Rana has one after getting home from the award ceremony. She has a cry in it for a while, and then Sherif goes in himself to comfort her.
- Threatening Shark: A Mako shark, who forces everyone to hide in the Salem Express ship with dwindling oxygen.
- Title Drop: In the climax, one of the crew identifies the shark as a Mako.
