Get Duked! (alternatively known as Boyz in the Wood) is a 2020 British Black Comedy film from writer/director Ninian Doff in his filmmaking debut. It premiered in 2019 at the South By Southwest Film Festival before premiering on August 28th, 2020 on Amazon Prime.
The film follows four boys - troublemakers Dean, Duncan, and DJ Beatroot, plus well-behaved Ian - who are taken to the Scottish Highlands to participate for the Duke of Edinburgh Award. While the boys are intent on having a wild time, nearby hunters have a different plan in mind for them.
Get Duked! provides examples of:
- Atrocious Alias: Dean tells DJ that "Beatroot" is a terrible rap name.
- Black Comedy: There's one attempted murder that is played for laughs, and the demise of the hunters comes as such as surprise that it becomes Bloody Hilarious.
- Brick Joke: After the boys supposedly kill Carlyle, they try to roll the minibus off a cliff to make it look like a suicide. Near the end when the hunters have the boys cornered, they are crushed to death by the falling minibus, which took over a day to land.
- Chekhov's Gun: The minibus
- Here We Go Again!: A new group, this time a quartet of teenage girls set off on the Duke of Edinburgh award and are stalked by an onlooker. Luckily the boys gave them weapons beforehand.
- Mushroom Samba: DJ and the farmers trip balls after eating rabbit feces that contain fermented magic mushrooms. He later shares some with his friends so they experience the same high. PC Hamish also trips out after ingesting the rabbit poop.
- The Pigpen: Duncan is stated to have poor hygiene.
- Punny Name: "DJ Beatroot", as in "the root of the beat", although the vegetable is thought of more than once when the name is spoken.
- "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Dean delivers one to the Duke and Duchess after they criticize modern youths for their behavior by saying the older generation's actions have led to kids inheriting a Crapsack World and then having to explain to their own theoretical future children on being forced to inherit this generational white elephant.
- The Reveal: Mr. Carlyle is the bread thief.
- Running Gag: Duncan's fork being "well sharp".
- Title Drop: In DJ’s rap to the farmers.
- Toilet Humor: The boys have to participate in the award for setting fire to a toilet, and there is a Running Gag involving rabbit feces.
