Death Kappa is an Affectionate Parody, Toku and Kaiju film co-produced by Nikkatsu, Nakasu and Fever Dreams, it was released to home media in July of 2010 before being released in theaters in November of that same year.

But after her grandma is killed in a car accident, it falls on Kanako to take over the family’s shrine. One day while she and her brothers are listening to one of her songs they see a kappa dancing along in the forest just outside their house, they quickly befriend the Kappa and he becomes like a part of the family.

However, a sinister conspiracy is afoot. A dangerous organization has plans for the Kappa and they will to anything to get their hands on him.

This movie provides examples of…

  • Asshole Victim: The group who ran over Kanako’s grandmother are later attacked by the bad guys, the guys are killed by the Umihiko, while the girls are kidnapped and processed to become Umihiko themselves.
  • Big Bad: Yuriko, the granddaughter of a Mad Scientist who tried to create an army of fish men super soldiers during World War II.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Considering the atrocities committed by the Japanese government during World War II, they drew the line at Yuriko’s Grandfather’s Umihiko project, calling it a crime against nature.
  • Far East Asian Terrorists: The State Guard, technically domestic terrorists, they want to use the Umihiko to bring back the Japanese Empire and "RESTORE TRUE! SHOWA! AMBITION!".
  • Fish People: the Umihiko.

  • Indecisive Parody: Probably the biggest criticism this film receives is the fact that the production team seemed too uncertain about how much they wanted the story to be taken seriously.

  • Not Zilla: Hangyolas is basically Godzilla if he was a fish instead of a reptile.
  • Unusually Uninteresting Sight: When Kanako is walking into town she walks past three men consecutively, one looks like The Igor, the second has a scar in the shape of a human face on his cheek and the third looks completely normal, she simply waved at each of them with a shy smile.
