"He is not perfect. Neither are we. We have made mistakes, errors in judgement and have given in to the worst of emotions. He will, undoubtedly, have some problems along the way, as well as the other candidates. But first, he must be awakened..."
Leopold from the prologue
The Heroes of Time is an Intercontinuity Crossover fic by Iheartgod175, who also wrote Super Readers' Biggest Adventure and Fiery Heart, Broken Soul. The fic deals with Hanna-Barbera characters taking up Keyblades and fighting the Heartless that have invaded their world.

The story begins with Organization XIII, who have examined the entire universe and are interested in harvesting the inhabitants' Hearts for themselves. With them is a mysterious man called the Extinguisher, who is far more interested in finding the titular Kingdom Hearts than Organization XIII is. At the same time, a group of strange men, known as the Inner Circle, senses their movements and plan on recruiting the Seven, a group of Keyblade bearers that can stop them. The Seven, as it turns out, exist in the Hanna-Barbera universe.

Huckleberry Hound undergoes his Dive Into the Heart, and originally chooses the path of the Wizard, as he saw himself as a Person of Mass Destruction when he picks up the sword. Unfortunately for him, the Heartless attack his house and kidnap Pixie and Dixie. He almost dies, but that is when he receives a Keyblade of his own. After escaping from that mess, he heads to Jellystone Park to meet up with Yogi and Boo-Boo, and ask them what's going on, only for the Heartless to attack there and to almost kill them. When Yogi ends up getting a Keyblade, the Inner Circle makes their appearance, and explains everything to Huck and Yogi about what's going on.

The world that the characters live in is being overrun by creatures known as the Heartless, creatures that manifest themselves from the darkness in people's hearts. They attempt to steal the hearts of others in order to gain more power, and one of the members, Reginald, explains that they were released with the intention of destroying their home. The only way to combat them is by using swords known as the Keyblades, which have powers to unlock gateways to other worlds and can only be wielded by chosen few. Reginald explains that Huck and Yogi, along with many others, were chosen to wield the Keyblades they currently have, but that the Inner Circle has chosen them and five others to save the world from being destroyed. After finally forming, the team must travel across the universe and undo the damage done to the worlds in it before all is lost.

But nobody said that this mission will be easy. The slow destruction of their universe has fractured the Seven enough as it is...but the real challenge will be saving the day without becoming the very beings they destroy.

WARNING: Spoilers ahead for chapter 8!

This story contains the following tropes:

  • All Just a Dream: Huck, Yogi and Top Cat thought their Dive Into the Heart was this. Of course, this ends up being completely subverted.
  • Apocalypse How: It's implied that the Extinguisher plans on causing a Class Z Omniversal Metaphysical Negation just so he can consume everyone's power. As of now, many places have suffered Class 0 cases, with many of the characters from those areas getting caught in the throes.
  • A Storm Is Coming: The opening chapter features a freak storm before everything starts going wrong.
  • Berserk Button:
    • If you know what's good for you, never, ever put Huckleberry Hound's friends in danger. At best, he'll chew you out. At worst, he'll come after you with his new Keyblade, as he told Leopold in his angry threat.
    • Boo-Boo does not like it when someone puts others in danger, especially if the task is so dangerous even they wouldn't do it, as Dr. Quest found out.
    • For Yogi, attacking innocent bystanders. His desire to protect them is how he earned his Keyblade.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Virtually every character in the H-B universe qualifies as this, but the spotlight falls on Huck and Boo-Boo. Boo-Boo's normally sweet disposition goes out the window the moment Dr. Quest mentions that Yogi can't fight the Heartless without a Keyblade, and Huck's lax disposition also melts to chew out Leopold, the leader of the Inner Circle, for not helping him and his friends out. In their defense, they were watching the whole thing go down, and Dr. Quest sent Yogi out there by himself knowing full well that he wasn't equipped with the right weapons.
    • Snagglepuss also gets a dose of this in chapter 4, after hearing from Huck about what happened for them to be put in the hospital. He had to be talked out of beating the crap out of the Inner Circle when they came to apologize.
  • Big Bad: The Extinguisher.
  • Big Damn Heroes:
    • Huck gets a moment in chapter 2 where he saves Yogi and Boo-Boo from a Red Nocturne.
    • Both Yogi and Huck (the latter after being thrown through a van no less) attempt this in chapter 3, but suffice to say, it doesn't work. Thankfully, the Inner Circle appear and save Boo-Boo, Yogi and Huck from certain death after all three of them are injured from the battle at Jellystone Park.
    • Alec gets a pretty cool moment in chapter 7 when he rescues the Goofy Guards from getting killed by Heartless.
  • Blood Knight: The Extinguisher. Aside from his occasional Mad Scientist phases, he also loves a good fight.
  • The Cameo: While several of the cameos were meant to establish how bad the situation was, several characters, such as Top Cat, Snagglepuss, Peter Potamus and So-So and Droop-a-Long Coyote have important roles in the story.
    • Top Cat cameos in Huck's Dive to the Heart (although there he's more crazy), and Pixie and Dixie appear in chapter 1, while their foe/occasional friend, Mr. Jinks, was mentioned, having been kidnapped. Their kidnapping sets off the beginning of the story on Huck's end, as well as providing his motivation for helping Leopold.
    • As said above, Snagglepuss was originally intended to show up once, but later he joined Yogi's team.
    • The cast of Jonny Quest (sans Race), whose portrayals here are vastly different from their canon series, also cameo. Dr. Quest treats Yogi after his injuries, and Jonny appears later with a Keyblade.
    • Lippy the Lion and Hardy Har-Har also cameo during the cafeteria attack in chapter 5. Thankfully, they escape with ease.
    • Punkin' Puss and Mushmouse also make appearances in chapter 6. And they get off worse than Pixie, Dixie and Mr. Jinks, with both of their Hearts stolen and their home erased by a Class 0 disaster.
    • Peter Potamus and So-So, Touche Turtle and Dum-Dum, and the Goofy Guards (Yippee, Yappee, and Yahooey) appear in chapter 7. Peter and So-So and the Goofy Guards are some of the lucky ones to escape-Peter barely managed to get away and the Goofy Guards were rescued by Alec. Touche and Dum-Dum were not, sadly...
  • The Chosen One: Huck and Yogi were chosen by the Inner Circle to save the universe. As it turns out, there are five more people that they have to recruit.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: After being attacked by the Heartless and having witnessed Pixie and Dixie get kidnapped by them, Huck lays a smackdown on most of them with his new Keyblade before having to flee for his life.
    • In chapter 3, Yogi also manages to defeat several Neoshadows that were trying to kill Huck, who was knocked unconscious.
  • Determinator: Huckleberry Hound. He managed to pull himself out of Yogi's van after getting thrown into it by the Heartless. He has glass and metal lodged inside his body, and is bleeding out everywhere. His response when Yogi asked him what he was doing?
    Huck: I can still fight.
    • When the Heartless attack the team in chapter 5, Huck, Yogi and Snagglepuss are determined to prevent more people from getting killed/taken. This, combined with their training, culminates with them actually making short work of the Heartless.
  • Darker and Edgier: As per all of iheartgod175's stories, but this one takes the normally happy Hanna-Barbera universe and dumps the Heartless in it, as well as a villain who likes to toy with people's lives.
  • Enemy Mine: When it turns out the Extinguisher wants both of their hearts, Mushmouse and Punkin' decide to team up to stop him.
  • Fate Worse than Death: It's implied that the inhabitants of the worlds that the Extinguisher takes over have either have their Hearts stolen to provide the Extinguisher with more Heartless, or are simply devoured, rendering them Deader than Dead. Chapters 7 through 9 reveal that he was doing far worse than that, including using the darkness inside both Ranger Smith and Officer Dibble to turn them against their friends. Whereas Ranger Smith's darkness was transformed into a Heartless, Dibble was forcibly turned into one.
  • Fighting Your Friend: Yogi and company fight against the Heartless Ranger, which is a Heartless created from Ranger Smith's darkness; they believe that he was turned into a Heartless, and Yogi in particular was distraught about destroying it. Played straight with Dibble, though, who was turned into a hybrid Heartless by the Extinguisher in order to screw with Top Cat and his gang.
  • Flat-Earth Atheist: Top Cat refuses to believe that he was chosen to be one of the Seven to save the world, and regarding the fact that the Heartless are devouring the world, he doesn't believe that anything like that could happen in New York.
  • For the Evulz: The Extinguisher is a combination of this and For Science! (see below).
  • For Science!: Part of the reason the Extinguisher does what he does to Ranger Smith and Officer Dibble is to try out new methods he was working on.
  • Heroic Second Wind: Subverted. Huck's Determinator moment is downplayed by the fact that he's so injured, he can't even move, making him a liability to Yogi. Because the latter had to protect him, the Neoshadows end up trapping both of them and knocking them out.
  • How Do I Shot Web?: Both Huck and Yogi have no idea how to use their Keyblades at first, but the moment they saw their friends in danger, they managed to beat the crap out of the Heartless.
  • Hot-Blooded: Although he's still as relaxed as ever, one can tell that there's a bit of fire in Huck after the incident with Pixie and Dixie and the incident in Jellystone, which surprises both the Inner Circle and his friends, some of whom have known him for years.
  • Let's Get Dangerous!: Huck in chapter 2.
Huck (after the Shadows slash his arm): So, y'all want a fight out of me, do you? Well, you're gonna get one!
    • The normally calm Snagglepuss gets this way after he hears Huck's story. Huck had to verbally restrain him from hurting any of the members of the Inner Circle.
  • Let Us Never Speak of This Again: Chapter 5 reveals that the Inner Circle knew a man named Cornelius, who they'd apparently killed due to betraying them. Yogi tries to ask, but Leopold quickly shuts him down, saying that he shouldn't ask such a question...only to privately reflect on it in chapter 6.
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: The Extinguisher.
  • The Omniscient Council of Vagueness: The Inner Circle, who are the ones who send Huck and Yogi out on their adventure. They were watching everything, only getting involved when Yogi gets a Keyblade, but he and Huck lose the fight against the Neoshadows. Huck eventually calls them out on their vagueness, which leaves Leopold frazzled.
  • Oh, Crap!: Huck in chapter 1, when the Heartless surround him after he receives his Keyblade. Yogi also has this reaction in Chapter 2 when the Heartless swarm outside his cave.
    • Both Punkin' and Mushmouse when they realize that the Extinguisher is on neither of their sides, forcing them to work together.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: When both Huck and Boo-Boo are mad, it's not good.
  • Open Mouth, Insert Foot: Both Dr. Quest and Leopold did this in Chapter 3 during their conversations with Boo-Boo and Huck. It didn't end well.
  • Possession Implies Mastery: When Huck and Yogi receive their Keyblades, they are revealed to be quite competent in using them, a sign that they are true Keyblade masters. In Huck's case, he trained under Touche Turtle, so he was just putting his skills to use.
  • Put the "Laughter" in "Slaughter": When Huck grabs the sword, he sees a vision of himself slaughtering innocent people and laughing maniacally while doing it.
  • Refused the Call: Top Cat at first refuses to help Yogi and the others take on the Heartless, mostly due to the fact that he's not interested in it.
  • Resigned to the Call: Huck does this in chapter 3 after his impassioned speech to the Inner Circle. Yogi and Snagglepuss follow suit as well.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: Yippee flies into one in chapter 7, when he sees that the King and Queen have had their Hearts stolen. It's a temporary one though, but it was still pretty awesome.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Punkin' Puss-and later Mushmouse- do this when confronted with the Extinguisher for the first time.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: According to Reginald and Alec, the Heartless are this in the Hanna-Barbera world. They were locked away in a large gate called the Door of Darkness, but it was opened by somebody, and they don't even know who.
  • Standard Evil Organization Squad: Organization XIII, of course. Their role in this story, as of now, involves helping out a man known as the Extinguisher, who is responsible for kidnapping Pixie, Dixie, Mr. Jinks and Ranger Smith so far, and seeks to obtain Huck's and Yogi's world for himself.
  • The Only One Allowed to Defeat You: Punkin' Puss's reason for saving Mushmouse in chapter 6, as he's not about to let the Extinguisher have all the glory.
  • Villain Team-Up: The Extinguisher has teamed up with Organization XIII to destroy the Hanna-Barbera universe, although neither side is truly respective of the other.
  • We Wait: Leopold's response to Alec asking him if they should explain to Huck everything that's going on. As it turns out,he probably should have taken his advice.
  • Wham Line: Jonny Quest is asked if anybody at his school received a Keyblade, as the Heartless attacked there. A flash of light later: "Yeah. I did".
