Queen In The North
is a Game of Thrones fanfiction by Sansrya Fangirl.Rose Stark, eldest of the Stark Sisters, is crowned Queen by her bannermen in response to her father's death. She then marches south to war against Joffrey to avenge him and rescue her sisters. However they soon learn they are all in danger and must work together to survive.
It provides examples of
- Action Girl: Queen Rose is a Lady of War, and Warrior Princess. She is considered the North's greatest warrior. In the end, it is by her flaming blade , Lightbringer, that the main villain, the Night King, falls, although she had alot of help. Her sisters, Joanna and Arya, also fall under this trope, with Joanna being instrumental in the Final Battle.
- Alternate Universe: Beginning with Robb being born female and branching out from there.
- Arranged Marriage: Joffrey and Sansa at the beginning, to Rose's disgust. Rose is betrothed to a Frey boy to secure a bridge, and later reneges on this in order to be with her sisters. This partly motivates the Freys along with other houses, to assassinate her in the crypt of Winterfell.
- Assassination Attempt: Resentful over Rose's plans to negotiate with the southerners and the Dragon Queen Daenerys, as well as abounding rumors that Rose is in an incestuous relationship with one or more of her sisters, House Frey alongside a few other minor houses, and paid off by Littlefinger, stab and kill Queen Rose after luring her into a trap. They also plan on assassinating the rest of the Stark royal family but are thwarted by Joanna and Brienne. Thanks to Melisandre and the magic of the Red God, Rose comes Back from the Dead.
- Awesome Moment of Crowning: The very first scene has Rose being crowned Queen in the North and Queen of the Trident by her bannermen. After defeating Jorah Mormont in the final confrontation, Rose's cousin Visenya is crowned Queen in the South.
- Big Damn Heroes: It appears to the other queens that Daenerys has left them to die. During the Final Battle at Winterfell, all hope seems to be lost and Rose is about to die...and then Drogon flies overhead, burning the wight giant that was attacking her. Daenerys, supported by her entire army and even the Red Priests of Volantis, have finally arrived to help.
- Bittersweet Ending: Rose is secured as Queen of the North, Trident and Vale. Her cousin, Visenya is Queen in the South and ruler of the remaining four kingdoms. Daenerys bends the knee but continues on as part of Visenya's lovers group and inner circle. The War of Five Kings never happened, being replaced with the Dance of Stags (because Balon never claimed himself king and Stannis lost early on). However, most of the realm's fighting men died at the Battle of Ice and Fire, and Beth Stark is a mysterious, emotionless shell of her former self.
- Butch Lesbian: Implied, with Arya. She enjoys fighting and riding, unlike her elder sisters Rose and Joanna, who only did so out of duty and necessity, cut her hair short to escape King's Landing, and falls in love with Rose. A case of Adaptational Sexuality, as Gendry is not in this fic at all and Arya shows no attraction to men.
- Brother–Sister Incest Very prevalent. Rose and Joanna fall in love early on, and the relationship eventually expands to include three more Stark siblings. It is offhandedly mentioned that all of the Sand Snakes make love to one another.
- The Cavalry: Literal examples. During the Battle of Castle Black, Rose saves Lord Commander Thorne by riding to his aid against their wildling attackers, Just in Time. During the Final Battle at Winterfell, later called in-universe as the Battle of Ice and Fire, Daenerys arrives to help the Grand Alliance, including her mounted Khalassar. Both are Gondor Calls for Aid examples due to the defenders calling for aid prior to the battle.
- Combat by Champion: The actual final conflict of the fic after the climactic Battle of Ice and Fire is the duel between Visenya Targaryen and Jorah Mormont after being selected as champions by Rose and Daenerys, in response to Daenerys' betrayal and violent insistence on being Queen of Westeros. Rose is adament she cannot defeat Dany in the field, and single combat is their only hope.
- Creepy Uncle: Unique case of consensual aunt and niece. Due to their lack of any real age gap, the only "creepiness" associated with this is the fact they are aunt and niece. Daenerys makes love to Queen Visenya in the final epilogue chapter.
- Death by Adaptation: Tyrion Lannister dies fighting in the Battle of King's Landing.
- Duel to the Death: During the Final Battle between the Night King and The Grand Alliance, Queen Rose faces off against the Night King, one on one. It doesn't stay one on one for long, with all of her sisters and Daenerys getting in on the action in a final desperate attempt to stop the Army of the Dead. Almost immediately afterwards, Visenya and Jorah Mormont engage in a Combat by Champion duel to decide who sits on the Iron Throne, as a final Post-Climax Confrontation before the day is done.
- Final Battle: The climactic battle is between the legions of the White Walkers and their Army of the Dead, and the Grand Alliance of still-living characters, led by the Four Queens, Yara, Daenerys, Shireen and Rose.
- Fallen Hero: Daenerys despite helping Rose save the world moments earlier, betrays her at the last second and plans to either force her to bend the knee, or annihilate her remaining armies in order to seize the Iron Throne for herself. This is because Rose's army was nearly obliterated while her own remained relatively fresh. Rose's only hope lies in Combat by Champion.
- Gender Bender: All of the Stark siblings. Jon, included, known here as Joanna. However Joanna is still later revealed as Visenya Targaryen, daughter of Prince Rhaegar and Lyanna Stark
- Gayngst: Rose is not unhappy to be lesbian. She is unhappy that she is sleeping with her sisters, and thus cannot be openly in a relationship with them.
- Gondor Calls for Aid: Rose, alongside the other queens, negotiate a Grand Alliance to fight off their common enemy, the oncoming White Walkers.
- Heroic Bastard Joanna Snow. She is however legitimized as a full Stark by Rose after the victorious Battle of King's Landing and is later revealed as not a bastard at all.
- Heroic Sacrifice: Rose must stab and kill Visenya in order to forge Lightbringer and save the world. Once visenya realizes what her cousin-girlfriend's plan truly is, she willingly lets it happen.
- The High Queen: Shireen Baratheon is crowned as such after the Battle of King's Landing.
- Hidden Backup Prince: As in the TV Show, Joanna Snow, bastard of Ned Stark is revealed as the hidden daughter of Rhaegar and Lyanna, and thus the rightful Queen of Westeros. Unique for this trope, this causes Joanna quite a bit of angst until near the end of the fic, where she embraces her true identity and undergoes a name change to Visenya Targaryen.
- The Kingslayer: Rose becomes the Kingslayer when she defeats the Night King. Rose is assassinated by several disgruntled parties, ultimately organized and paid off by Petyr Baelish. She gets better.
- Knight Templar Big Sister: Rose swore when they were born, that she would always protect her younger sisters. She meant it. She goes to some quite violent lengths to do so, and it becomes even more difficult once the Sister-Sister Incest starts.
- Lady of War: Rose is a Frontline General queen, considered her kingdom's best warrior and greatest defender.
- The Lancer: Joanna is this for much of the story, serving under her sister and queen, Rose. However Sansa is officially next in the line of succession.
- Lipstick Lesbian: Rose and Joanna are both gay, but extremely beautiful. Subverted, as at the same time, they are also warriors. Played straight with Sansa, their younger sister who admits her attraction to Joffrey was that of a "stupid little girl" and from then on, only shows interest in her sisters.
- Love Triangle: Between Rose, Joanna and Daenerys. Briefly. Then they work it out and become Polyamory.
- Luke, I Am Your Father: Howland Reed confronts Queen Rose and Joanna, begging a private word with Joanna. He reveals, as the sole survivor of the fight at the Tower of Joy, that she is the daughter of Rhaegar and Lyanna.
- The Magnificent: By the end, Queen Rose is called the Great due to her many deeds. Her cousin, Visenya is named The Reborn due to her battlefield revival after performing a Heroic Sacrifice during the Final Battle. Shireen is called The Grey Eminence, when she becomes queen after the deaths of Renly and Stannis.
- My God, What Have I Done?:
- Catelyn comes to regret her cruelty towards Joanna, albeit with some pushing from Rose.
- Daenerys after Jorah loses the final duel against Visenya and is nearly killed by her, realizes how far she almost went to take her perceived birthright. She falls to her knees in horror and shame, and officially bends the knee to her niece, naming Visenya "My Queen".
- Politically Incorrect Villain: Part of the motivation of Rose's assassins is her attempted alliance with "savages".
- Polyamory: By the end, the fic splits the surviving main female characters into two lover-groups of five people or more. The primary one being the union of Rose, Daenerys, Visenya, Ricka, Sansa and Arya.
- Post-Climax Confrontation: After the dead are defeated, Daenerys attempts one last time to take the Iron Throne for herself, resulting in Joanna, after accepting her true heritage as Visenya Targaryen, demanding Combat by Champion. Daenerys accepts and chooses Jorah as her champion.
- Red Baron: Rose is named The Great, at the end. Joanna's title is The Reborn. Queen Shireen is the Grey Eminence.
- Reluctant Ruler: Queen Visenya only claims the Iron throne after being given no choice and proclaiming in the past she had no interest in it, despite being the rightful heir.
- The Reveal: Joanna Snow is Visenya Targaryen, rightful Queen of Westeros. Petyr Baelish and Walder Frey were behind the assassination of Rose.
- Rightful King Returns: After accepting defeat in the final duel between Jorah and Visenya, Daenerys and Shireen bend the knee and crown Visenya Targaryen Queen in the South.
- Rousing Speech: Rose makes several, to rally her forces against the White Walkers and Army of the Dead.
- Royals Who Actually Do Something: Rose is described as the defender of her kingdom and its greatest general, like her show counterpart, Robb Stark. Her sisters, Joanna and Arya, are also well trained in combat and prove themselves great fighters in the Final Battle and after Rose's death.
- Royal Decree: The first one Queen Visenya proclaims is to release her cousin Rose's kingdom from her own, securing Northern Independence for good.
- Royal Harem: Rose gains one by the end, primarily consisting of the majority of her younger sisters.
- Refused the Call: Joanna initially does not wish to claim the throne and only does so after it seems like there is no other option to stop her aunt.
- "Save the World" Climax: Rose, Daenerys and the Grand Alliance face off against the White Walkers during the Final Battle at Winterfell.
- Spared by the Adaptation: A genderbent Robb, Shireen, Margaery, Catelyn, The Sand Snakes, Daenerys, Jorah and a genderbent Rickon all survive.
- Storming the Castle: The Battle of King's Landing, near the beginning of the fic, where Rose and King Renly attack the capital of the Seven Kingdoms to depose King Joffrey. The Battle of Ice and Fire, at the end.
- Try to Fit That on a Business Card: The final full title of Rose Stark is Rose The Great of House Stark, First Of Her Name, Queen of the North, Trident and Vale, Slayer of Tywin Lannister, The Reborn, The Burning Wolf, Hero of the Battle of Castle Black, Hero of the Battle of Ice and Fire, Slayer of Tywin Lannister, Savior of Humanity, Lady of Winterfell and Protector of the North.
- Unexpected Successor: After Rose's death, Sansa takes over as Queen in the North. Briefly. After the deaths of her uncle Renly and father Stannis in the Dance of Stags, Shireen Baratheon becomes the new Queen of Westeros, though she has a few rivals.
- Villainous Valor: Despite Renly's death, Tywin Lannister knows he faces certain defeat in the Battle of King's Landing during the Dance of Stags. He challenges Rose to single combat, and she quickly kills him, being younger and faster.
- Violently Protective Girlfriend: Rose is very protective of her sister-lovers.
- Warrior Princess: Rose is a Warrior Queen, to be exact. Subverted with Joanna, who begins as a Warrior Princess but becomes queen at the end of the fic.
- "Well Done, Daughter!" Girl: Implied with Rose. She mourns her father greatly, regretting how her last words to him were in anger, over the Joffrey-Sansa betrothal.
- Wicked Stepmother: Catelyn is quite awful to Joanna, until Rose thunderously commands her not to
- Young and in Charge: Rose, Shireen, Daenerys and Yara are young but rule as monarchs in their own right. Sansa briefly has to take charge in the North after Rose's death.
