Fanfic / Like Mother Like Son

Go To

Created by Omega Ultra. The creator of Stories And Tales From Dimension 63 and Finding A Loud. Like Mother, Like Son and the sequel Like Father Like Son tells the stories of the Matriarch and Patriarch of the Loud family attempting to bond with their only boy.

In Like Mother, Like Son, Lincoln Loud desperately wants to enter an upcoming gaming tournament. His father says he should focus on studying and finding a passion, as you can't make a living off of playing video games. His wife staunchly disagrees and reveals a part of her past that will change how the snow haired boy sees the bored dental assistant forever.

Its sequel Like Father Like Son takes place months later. Wanting to find some common ground with his son Lynn Sr develops a deep dive game to help try to understand his son's passion for gaming. Though he probably should have spent some more time coding as the two soon find themselves trapped in a digital world where if they die in the game, they die for real.

Like Mother, Like Son is complete as of 9/22/18 with nine chapters.

Like Father, Like Son was written for National November Writing Month and as such was completed 29/11/20 with thirty chapters.

Its sequel has examples of:

     Like Father, Like Son
  • Didn't Think This Through: Lynn never finished error checking the game before he and Lincoln played it.
    • Lisa wasn't worried about her brother and father using her enhanced VR technology, as it's only dangerous to them if they experience too many stimuli until her mother reminds her that the two are playing a 'video game'.
  • Hard Truth Aesop: You can't force your children to listen to you once they have grown and are out on their own. You need to earn their respect as children if you want them to respect you as adults.
  • Hidden Depths: Despite its bugginess, that Lynn Sr. was able to code a Minecraft mod at all let alone a VR one in only a day is very impressive.
  • Grounded Forever: When Rita hears what Lisa did with the Oculus headsets, she tells the girl she's grounded. Lisa, expecting it to be a comically long time, guesses she'll be grounded until Lily is in college. Her mother says she grounded until Leni is in college. Which freaks the little genius out.
    • Its taken up a notch when she upgrades the grounding until Leni's kids are in college. Then until Leni's daughter wins a Nobel prize.
  • Heir Club for Men: Lynn Sr. tells Lincoln he's planning on giving him Vanzilla when he's old enough. Lori, the one currently driving the van is not pleased that her father is passing over her or her four other teenage daughters to give the car to his only son, only for Rita to ask her if she's really upset that Lincoln is going to be saddled with Vanzilla. At which she calms down.
  • Like Father, Unlike Son: Lynn Sr. is worried that unlike his daughters who inherited the better parts of his personality note , he's afraid that Lincoln only got the aspects of his personality that he hates note  and is desperate to find something positive in his son that he can proudly say he got from his old man.
  • Oh, Crap!: After defeating the Ender Dragon Lincoln wonders why the ending sequence hasn't started only to realize that it probably means his dad added a second stage to the boss fight.
  • Not in Front of the Kid: After Lincoln belts out a stream of censored swears, Rita reprimands her son for cussing and tells her husband to tell him off as well, only for Lynn Sr to belt out the exact same stream of curse words. When Rita acts shocked at his behavior Lynn reminds his wife that he and their son are both in mortal danger so now is not the time to worry about swears.
  • Sequential Boss: Lynn thought it would be fun to turn the Ender Dragon into one of these. His children and wife disagree.
  • Skewed Priorities: Lynn was more focused on making sure that the game was fun than making sure it was glitch-free. Lincoln even lampshades that his father put so much attention into making sure the game was cool, yet he's almost phased through the ground multiple times by this point.
  • "Where Are They Now?" Epilogue: The ending takes place twenty years later at the Loud Family reunion, showing how each of the kids are doing now. It should be noted that most of the kids have also started large families as well.
    • Lori had taken over the restaurant with Bobby and is expecting another child.
    • Lincoln is still a gaming master and has married Stella.
    • Lynn is now playing for the Royal Woods Roosters and they are currently on a win streak.
    • Leni has moved to New York with Chaz and had become a fashion designer.
    • Luna is still together with Sam and they had started a band together with Chuck's help. They're going to go on tour soon, and Luna has heard she will play a show with Mick Swagger.
    • Luan had started a family with Benny and is now performing for kids' parties.
    • Lucy is now a poet and journalist, writing for the Royal Woods Announcer.
    • Lana has started a plumbing business while volunteering for the Royal Woods Zoo in the meantime.
    • Lola is still in the pageant circuit and is going to perform in the Miss America competition soon.
    • Lisa had become a full-time professor and researcher.
    • Lily is in college now, at the top of her class in Art and planning to go into animation. Apparently, she's planning to make a tv show about her life growing up in a huge family.
  • Your Mind Makes It Real: While hooked up to Lisa's VR tech Lincoln and Lynn Sr respond to all stimuli as they would in real life. When Lynn breaks his leg in the game, despite not actually breaking his leg in the real world his body has essentially been tricked into thinking it was and starts to bruise accordingly.
