Examples For Infinity Train: Bryce's Story:

  • Don't Tell Mama: Bryce lies to his grandma, not wanting her to find out about his "late-night job".
  • Friend to All Children: Tabitha, who looks after the children in her car and encourages Bryce to adopt Penny.
  • Half-Truth: Bryce only tells Tabitha, the nurse aboard the train, the bare bones of his psychological issues. Tabitha sees right through it, knowing that him having a number shows his issues go far deeper than that.
  • Health Care Motivation: Bryce becomes a thief because he wants to help his parents pay their medical bills, and partly because he feels obligated to care for them.
  • It's All My Fault: Bryce blames himself for his parents' accident, despite his grandma assuring him that he isn't to blame.
  • Justified Criminal: Bryce doesn't want to rob anybody: but his parents have high medical bills and he feels guilty after being coddled by them for so long.
  • Laser Hallway: Averted. Bryce's bank heist is foiled by a single hidden security laser that was so well-hidden, even his criminal partners didn't notice it.
  • No Honor Among Thieves: Bryce's criminal partners insist they are going to help him with his parents' medical bills. But when the police arrive, they have no problem taking his promised share, claiming it is his punishment for activating the security laser. And when Bryce tries taking it, they hold him at gunpoint.
  • Punch-Clock Villain: Bryce is an extreme example: he's a really good kid forced into a theft he hates to support his hospitalized parents.
  • Pyrrhic Victory: Bryce escapes with the loot...but it comes at the cost of a painful fall that makes it hard for him to walk back home.
  • Shrinking Violet: Penny, a timid girl who is nervous around strangers.
  • That Was Not a Dream: Bryce initially thinks he's dreaming when he ends up on the Infinity Train, and literally pinches himself to prove that isn't the case.

Tropes for Infinity Train Book 2: Emma's Story

  • Alien Abduction: Emma assumes she was abducted by aliens when she wakes up.
  • Disappeared Dad: Emma's father was murdered by a shooter when Emma was young.
  • Evil Brit: Nicholas has the affectations of an English gentleman and he's very, very evil.
  • Faux Affably Evil: Nicholas seems polite and hospitable...but has no problem hunting humans like they were game animals.
  • Good Is Not Soft: Emma is a decent girl, but she isn't afraid to throw bricks or resort to torture when someone pisses her off.
  • Hate at First Sight: Mirror Tulip is initially very hostile to Emma, thinking of her as a loser who deserved to be stuck on the train.
  • Hidden Depths: Mirror Tulip initially sees Emma as another jerk the train picked up, but her attitude changes when she sees Emma righteously call the Hunter out for killing people for sport.
  • Hunting the Most Dangerous Game: Nicholas and his buddies hunt human passengers for sport and keep them as trophies.
  • I Work Alone: Mirror Tulip has this attitude, refusing to accept help nor give help to anyone.
  • Jerkass:
    • Emma's aunt, who mocked her desire to help her mom out.
    • Mirror Tulip behaves in an incredibly hostile manner toward Emma, even smacking Emma in the face when she wouldn't leave her alone.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Mirror Tulip is mean to Emma, but she turns out to be right when she senses Nicholas and his buddies are most likely trouble.
  • Kick the Dog: Mirror Tulip doesn't exactly leave a good impression of herself towards Emma: spitefully refusing to tell her how to get her number down and telling her she deserves to be stuck, before leaving her to nearly fall into a pit.
  • The Kindnapper: One One, in his recorded message, insists she took Emma on the train to help her, but Emma doesn't appreciate being abducted against her will.
  • Laser-Guided Karma; As in canon, when a passenger acts good, the number goes down and when the passenger acts bad, the number goes up and the passenger falls into peril. Emma apologizing to Mirror Tulip allows her number to drop.
  • Loyal Animal Companion: Visco is a kind, friendly gerbil critter who is ready to help Emma out of a jam.
  • Missing Mom: Emma's mother, who was taken away to prison.
  • Nearly Normal Animal: Visco the Gerbil that Emma befriended is a mostly normal gerbil, albeit made of slime, capable of shapeshifting, and intelligent enough to understand her.
  • Parting-Words Regret: Emma's last conversation with her father before he was killed was an argument. To say she regrets this is an understatement.
  • Shapeshifting: Visco the Gerbil has the power to stretch its body, which it uses to help Emma when she's about to fall into a hole and can even grow wings and fly around.
  • Smoking Is Not Cool: Emma's mom had a smoking habit she disliked and she constantly fought with her mother to get her to quit.
  • The Tape Knew You Would Say That: Parodied. In the tape, One-One assumes one of the questions on the passenger's mind is "are their snacks provided", but Emma wasn't actually thinking that.
  • That Was Not a Dream: Emma initially thinks she's dreaming when she wakes up on the train.
