Fanfic / In a World of Grey

Go To

In a world of Grey is an Among Us fanfic written by Ironichydra. Green is a pretty normal crewmate; at least, he was until he noticed a secret room on the spaceship that only the captain, Red, seems to know about. Curious, he enters the room and discovers its cargo; Grey, an Impostor being transported by MIRA contained within the room. Forced by Red to go along with it, Green settles into his new routine and even starts to form something of a bond with Grey. Unfortunately, things don't stay that simple...

This work contains examples of:

  • Affably Evil/Faux Affably Evil: It's really hard to tell which of these Grey is.
  • The Aloner: Green starts off as this, doing his best to be alone and stay away from other people.
  • And Then John Was a Zombie: It's eventually revealed that Green was transformed into an Impostor by Grey during his break out. He manages to keep himself from killing anyone, except Grey.
  • Asshole Victim: Purple is kind of an asshole, so it isn't that sad when it's revealed he was Killed and Replaced by Grey.
  • Bait the Dog: Grey is set up as being a friendly guy, to the point Green starts doubting that he and by extension the other Impostors are as dangerous as MIRA claims. Then he breaks out, and proves that MIRA was telling the absolute truth.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: Green towards White, though it's more that he's just really introverted and socially awkward than anything else.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Grey is utterly disgusted with how greedy MIRA is, and even rails against how shoddy their construction of his cell was before breaking out.
  • False Friend: After Grey breaks out and nearly kills Green, Green decides he was this. While Grey does actually consider him a friend, he's so downright psychotic and unpredictable that he's dangerous to be around either way.
  • Foreshadowing:
  • Implied Love Interest: Nothing is explicitly stated to be developing between White and Green, but the subtext is there, to the point it can barely be called subtext at all.
  • Jerkass: Purple is introduced shoving a broken tablet into Green's hands and rudely demanding he fix it, and then obnoxiously adding a deadline. He gets nicer later on, except he didn't, because Grey replaced him.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold:
    • Blue is a paranoid, crusty veteran crewmate who jumps at the opportunity to eject Green when he correctly (kind of) thinks he's the Impostor. However, when he realizes that Green was turned into one against his will, hadn't killed anyone, and defended the crew from Grey knowing he'd be killed, he's instantly regretful and is implied to perform a Heroic Sacrifice to save his life.
    • Red, who's pretty gruff and follows the rules a little too closely, but clearly cares about the crew.
  • Kill and Replace:
    • After escaping, Grey pulls this on of the crew. It's Purple.
    • A heroic variant. It's heavily implied Blue ejects himself and allows Green to take over his identity so he'll survive.
  • Manic Pixie Dream Girl: White, who does her best to bring Green out of his shell.
  • Mythology Gag: The Impostor board game is pretty much the actual game, except it's a board game rather than a video game.
  • Nice Girl: White, who mainly seems to be motivated by wanting to help everyone else have fun, is generally pretty nice, and does her level best to befriend the painfully shy Green.
  • Nice Guy: Green shows signs of this as he grows out of his shell, proving to be compassionate and kind.
  • Oh, Crap!: Yellow after the lights go out while he and Green are fixing wires in electrical. He has an even bigger ones when he realizes Green's an Impostor.
  • Shrinking Violet: Green is a Rare Male Example. He's cripplingly shy and socially awkward around people, which leads to him trying to be alone as much as possible. His interactions with White help him come out of his shell, and he starts using Grey as a form of practice for talking with other people.
  • Took a Level in Kindness: Purple. Except he didn't, because Grey replaced him.
  • Wham Shot: After the lights are turned out in medbay, Green looks at his reflections, and sees his eyes are now red and have slitted pupils, confirming he's become an Impostor.
  • Wham Line: Midway through a rant about how little MIRA cares about its employees, Grey drops this bombshell.
Grey: I can tell you, that if I was in charge of making a cell for holding impostors, I would make sure that it was strong enough to withstand the force of one!
