"Spider-man has to make and live with his choices in a new world. The curse of power consumes all."
Official Story Description.

''Hands of Fate'' is a crossover fanfiction between Spider-Man and The Legend of Korra written by RGM-96S Stark Jegan. Also has characters from BioShock.

After defeating Mysterio and restoring order to the four dimensions along with the three other Spider-Men, Spider-Man Noir is dragged into the world of the Avatar, weeks before Korra arrives in Republic City.

  • Adaptational Early Appearance:
    • Iroh appears in the Korra series much earlier than Book Two, advising Peter several times throughout the story.
    • Unalaq also appears in the story before Book Two at the end of chapter 20, when he's visited by the demon, Mephisto, who wishes to make an offer.
  • Adaptational Expansion: The Spider-God that gave Peter his powers is revealed to be a Spirit long forgotten from the world of Avatar called known as Kumo.
  • Adaptational Heroism: In the comics, Spider-Man Noir at the beginning had little issue killing his foes, such as Vulture, only stopping after a talk with Aunt May. Here, since this takes place in the Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions, Peter has not killed any of his villains, and even fights off the influence of a Spirit to keep it from happening.
  • Adaptational Jerkass: In canon Korra, Lin Beifong was a tough but fair police chief who only wanted to do what was best for Republic City. And while she still does, she recruits a bunch of highly trained soldiers from the U.N.'s army to hunt down a teenager, just because he's helping people outside the law. She even went as far as to stage a fake hostage situation and create a made-up villain to do it. Downplayed Trope, as it's unclear if Lin is even aware that Spider-Man is a teenager. Furthermore, she still shows concern over Korra's well-being once the Avatar teams up with Spidey to take on the Equalists, and internally acknowledges that the fake hostage scenario was crossing a line.
  • Agent Scully: Peter initially doubts the existence of Spirits completely, despite being from an entirely different universe and having arrived in the Avatar world after a multi-universe spanning conflict over a reality-warping magical tablet. It takes a frightening encounter with the Moon Spirit, Yue, to finally shake him out of his skepticism, and even now, he still has trouble coming to terms with their existence.
  • Ascended Fanboy:
    • Bolin quickly becomes a huge fan of Spider-Man after he helps save him from the Equalists. He constantly states his support for the webhead and is visibly angry when he learns what Beifong did to try and catch him, even suggesting they put a straight jacket on her.
    • Tenzin's children also show an interest in Spider-Man, much to the man's ire, given he sees Spider-Man as a menace.
  • Badass Longcoat: Spider-Man begins to don one after his costume is severely damaged after his run-in with the Spider-Slayers. Though no fedora.
  • Battle Couple: While their not a couple, yet, Peter and Korra begin working together side-by-side to take down the Equalists.
  • Boxing Lessons for Superman: Peter gets taught several self-defense techniques by Asami's martial arts teacher, Kung-Lei. He quickly adapts this into his fighting style as Spider-Man and takes Equalist Chi-Blockers head-on.
  • Broken Pedestal:
    • Hiroshi for Peter. Peter greatly admired the man and was happy someone took notice of him because of the skills and talents he was born with instead of his Spider Powers. He desperately wanted to work with the man to help change the world. But when it's revealed that Hiroshi is the main backer of the Equalist movement, Peter at first believes he was coerced into working with them, but he soon sees that Hiroshi's hate for Benders is genuine and passionate. This leaves him feeling betrayed and it takes all of his self-control not to explode in anger and out himself as Spider-Man.
    • He also has this for himself. When he first got to the world of Avatar, he believed nothing could hurt him. No one would be able to challenge him and his level of power, justified since he'd just come out from saving the multiverse from a power-hungry supervillain that gave his nemeses extreme powerups. However, after being nearly killed by the Triads, beaten multiple times by Amon, and nearly captured and unmasked by the police, he starts to see he isn't as invincible and tries desperately to regain that sense of 'invincibility' by taking Amon down.
  • Canon Foreigner:
    • Yue, the Northern Watertribe's Princess turned Moon Spirit from the original Avatar series makes an appearance here, giving advice to Peter as well as breaking him out of his skepticism of Spirits.
    • Teo from original series also makes an appearance as a tech specialist for the Spider-Slayers.
  • Deducing the Secret Identity: Korra of all people, manages to figure out Peter is Spider-Man before anyone else in the story.
  • Demonic Possession: Kumo has taken over Peter's body several times in the story, mostly at points where Peter's morality was holding him back and getting him into trouble. It nearly resulted in him killing several Metalbender officers, but Peter managed to break free.
  • The Dreaded:
    • Spider-Man is this to the Triads, the Equalists, the police, etc. Everyone with evil intentions fears him to some degree. Even Amon fears him so much that he has to use the full power of his Bloodbending just to slow him down and escape.
    • Quan/The Prowler is for Peter. The man overpowered Peter completely and nearly had him captured.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Hiroshi, much like in canon, cherishes his daughter, but here, he also grows to care for Peter, or Takuya as he knows him. He desperately wants him to join the Equalists of his own will instead of forcing him to join. When Peter refuses, he's greatly disappointed and upset.
  • Fatal Flaw: Peter has several that nearly get him killed:
    • Arrogance: He thought that thanks to his abilities and the primitive technology of the reality he found himself in, would allow him to handle the challenges with ease. That attitude nearly gets him killed by the Bending Triads, almost arrested by the police, and beaten by Amon several times.
    • He's also gullible when he sees, or thinks, people are in trouble. Both the Triads and Police exploit this flaw and it nearly leads to his capture or death.
  • Flat-Earth Atheist: The attitude of the Lutece twins. As Peter discovers later on, while they may play hopscotch with the laws of time and space, their understanding of the supernatural is practically non-existent, as they believe Peter to be delirious when he asks them for insight about spirits. For fairly obvious reasons, this is a hindrance in matters relating to Avatar and Marvel, and is implied to be at least part of the reason they can't send Peter back home themselves, as whatever brought him to the Avatar world and is keeping him there is apparently supernatural in nature.
  • For Want Of A Nail: Peter's work with Hiroshi Sato ends up helping the Equalists create more advanced weaponry, not to his knowledge.
  • Good Cop/Bad Cop: Spider-Man and Korra pull this dynamic when they corner a possible informant for information about the Equalists.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: Korra has this when she learns that Tenzin had ordered her to stay on Air Temple Island during the Street War arc. She felt guilt for not going there to help Spider-Man after all he had done to help her and Mako find Bolin. Peter helps snap her out of is soon enough.
  • Ineffectual Loner: This is Spider-Man in Spades. He tries to handle everything on his own, due to his fear of others getting hurt because of him, so he's used to working alone, but that mindset has him lose many battles as time goes on. As the story progresses, he begins to come out of this as he begins working with Korra to take down the Equalists.
  • Innocently Insensitive: When Korra tries to probe Peter to get him to confess to him being Spider-Man, she ends up asking questions about his deceased parents.
  • Invincible Hero: Averted. Peter saw himself as this at the beginning, thinking no one would be able to touch him. But after nearly being killed by the triads, captured by the police, and beaten by Amon every single time they've fought, Peter doesn't see himself as this anymore and tries to regain that sense of invincibility.
  • Multilayer Façade: In addition to hiding his identity as Spider-Man, Peter also hides his real name behind a fake one, Takuya.
  • Mythology Gag: Takuya is the name Peter comes up with to keep others from knowing his real name. It comes from Takuya Yamashiro, who is Spider-Man in Spider-Man (Japan).
  • Original Character: The Spider-Slayers comprised a group of OCs from the U.N. Army to hunt down Spider-Man. One of them even takes the villain name of Prowler in this Fanfic.
  • Outside-Context Problem: Spider-Man is this to the world of Avatar. In a world where all known superpowers are based primarily on bending the elements, a superhuman who's abilities are not remotely based on the same idea is a bit difficult for them to counter, and it's only due to Peter's relative inexperience as a fighter that allows people to win against him. Once he starts to pick up more combat training, that advantage slowly evaporates.
  • Secret Chaser: When Korra gets her suspicion that Peter/Takuya is Spider-Man, she is determined to prove it to herself.
  • She Is Not My Girlfriend: A Running Gag in the series is that many people mistakenly think that Peter, or Spider-Man, has romantic feelings for Korra, and she does for him. They both deny it, but Word of God states it won't be that way forever, since they're doing a Peter x Korra story.
  • Ship Tease: Peter and Korra.
  • Significant Wardrobe Shift: After his harrow fight with the Spider-Slayers left his costume mostly torn up, Peter dons Noir's iconic trench coat from here on out, just without the fedora. The author hated the fedora.
  • Spirit Advisor: Yue, Iroh, and visions of his Uncle Ben play this role for Peter during his time in the Avatar world, giving him advice and trying their best to inform him of the situation. Peter mostly just plays this off as figments of his imagination at first before being forced to accept the reality of Spirits.
  • Taking You with Me: Peter tries this approach to keep Kumo from taking over his body. It works to keep the Spirit off his back for a while, but Kumo promises to come back, changing his tactics on how to convince Peter to become a true champion for him.
  • Teeth-Clenched Teamwork:
    • When Peter and Korra first start working together, the former struggles with this as he is more used to being a loner and the latter feels left out when he moves forward without her, while the latter struggles to keep up with the former and go along with his methods of doing things.
    • Peter works with members of the Spider-Slayers during the attack on the Pro-Bending Stadium.
  • Thou Shalt Not Kill: Spider-Man may be brutal to his villains, but he refuses to cross that one line. So much so that he was able to fight off the influence of the Spirit who gave him his powers so that he wouldn't end up taking a life, even if that life was Amon.
  • Title Drop: Happens in Chapter 12.
  • Unskilled, but Strong: Spider-Man started as this when he entered the world of Avatar. He was physically stronger and more agile than any person in the world, but his fighting style wasn't refined and easy to see through to someone who could get around his enhancements. After getting training from a Master Martial Artist, Spider-Man is now slowly refining his skills to allow him to fight others who managed to outskill him, like the Chi-Blockers.
  • Unwitting Pawn: Peter's work with Hiroshi Sato ends up helping the Equalist cause, the organization Spider-Man is actively trying to stop. Peter is horrified to learn the truth when Hitoshi tries to get him to join the Equalists knowingly. He refuses.
  • Villain Takes an Interest:
    • Amon sees potential in having Spider-Man as an alley and first tries to get him to join the Equalist cause. But when Spider-Man learns how far the group will go to achieve equality, he refuses.
    • Hiroshi takes an immediate interest in Peter's civilian side after he reads through a notebook full of genius ideas, thinking they can help the Equalists.
  • What the Hell Are You?: Amon screams this when Spider-Man manages to fight through the full power of his Bloodbending.
  • You Remind Me of X: Tenzin reminds Peter of J. Jonah Jamason. Makes sense given that Tenzin was voiced by J. K. Simmons, who plays JJJ in most Spider-Man media.
  • You Wouldn't Believe Me If I Told You: Part of the reason Peter doesn't tell Korra about his true origins, even after she deduces his identity. He figures that while she can accept his powers and even believe that a spirit is in his head, the fact that he's from an entirely different universe where the Avatar and Benders don't exist might be too much for her to handle. That said, it's also mixed with the concern that even if she does come to believe him, it would put her in the crosshairs of whatever entity brought him to her world in the first place, which is something he would prefer to avoid.
