Fanfic / Gamera: Defenders of Earth

Go To

Gamera: Defenders Of Earth is a fanfiction series depicted in a series of art illustrated created by Deviantart user OctoSquidVA

Each illustration is provided a story and intended to merge all the Gamera-related media created by Daiei/Kadokawa into a single coherent universe, while also borrowing some plot elements from the comics, Shinpei Hayashiya's Gamera 4: Truth, and Gamera 2000.

Gamera: Defenders Of Earth provides examples of:

  • Adaptational Badass:
    • Barugon loses his weakness to freshwater in the films, and he even manages to survive his battle with Gamera.
    • Zigra, who now has a wide range of combat skills and a level of competency. In addition to most of his canonical powers, he can now fire a red laser beam from the beam aperture on his forehead.
    • Doublius, who has gone from a two-headed clawed kaiju to a insectoid kaiju with great agility who can easily give the JSDF a run for their money with all of his battle tactics.
    • Zedus is also far more badass here than he was in his debut film, withstanding multiple blows from Gamera and even getting in a few hits of his own.
  • Adaptational Heroism: The Eustace Foundation was a global charity organization who is secretly plotting to cull over 99% of humanity and leave behind a few survivors by feeding children to kaiju. Here, they fulfill the same role, only this time they never intend to cull humanity. Same goes for the Hemueden civilization, who were also given the same treatment, not to mention the fact that they've sealed Wyvern in an iceberg.
  • Adaptation Origin Connection: The Kaltoss are the result of the Bio-Mecha using the DNA of the Gyaos. Same is said for the Legion, who were also created by the Bio-Mecha.
  • Adaptation Species Change:
    • Downplayed. While they do remain as extraterrestrial in origin, the Legion are bio-engineered kaiju created by the Bio-Mecha.
  • Aliens Are Bastards: General Quicksilver.
  • Alien Invasion: The Broomarks and the Bio-Mecha.
  • Alternate Universe: All of the Gamera films, including the anime, take place in this universe's timeline.
  • Attack of the 50-Foot Whatever: Ghaerox, a mutated monkfish exposed to radiation from the same nuclear bomb that freed Gamera from his atoll.
  • Canon Immigrant:
  • Composite Character:
    • Gamera is a combination of his Showa, Heisei, and Reiwa incarnations.
    • Barugon is a combination of his Showa incarnation and his 2003 manga-only Heisei incarnation.
    • Viras is a combination of his Showa and Reiwa incarnations.
    • Jiger is a combination of her Showa and Reiwa incarnations.
    • Zigra is a combination of his Showa and Dark Horse incarnations.
    • The Aquatic Gyaos is a mix of the original monster and the S-Gyaos from GAMERA -Rebirth-.
  • Draconic Abomination: The two-headed space dragon Wyvern is the first of the Bio-Mecha's creations who arrived to Earth in a meteorite 200,000 years ago.
  • For Want Of A Nail: Due to the combined timeline, there are some noticeable changes:
    • The events of GAMERA -Rebirth- occur differently, with Emiko raising the baby Jiger after it hatches, Gamera and Barugon battling Jiger once again, Emiko never being Evil All Along, and Viras being the true mastermind.
    • Guiron and the Garasharp aid Gamera in the battle against the Hyper Gyaos, but this time with the aid of Barugon, Jiger, Monga, Zigra, and Iris (albeit in the alternate timeline).
    • Gamera fights Zedus after the mutated lizard attempts to kill Toto.
  • From Bad to Worse: The Gyaos, every time they show up, arrive in progressively bigger swarms. Add the fact that they keep growing bigger, stronger, and a bit more difficult to deal with.
  • A Girl and Her X: Megumi and Iris, the young Ryuseicho, have become True Companions, which is the main factor of why Iris eventually sided with humanity and became the bird guardian he is to this day.
  • Greater-Scope Villain: The Bio-Mecha, who are responsible for creating Wyvern, Legion, Kugekira, and the Kaltoss.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Barugon, after having been revealed to have survived his defeat, redeems himself by healing Gamera using his Mana, and later joins forces with him during his battle with Viras, Zigra, and Wyvern. Jiger also undergoes this when she also joins Gamera and Barugon after Zigra frees her from her tomb by accident.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • The Broomark Republic's leader's name Zanon is derived from the antagonist of the same name from Gamera: Super Monster.
    • Monga was meant to battle Guiron in the original script for Gamera Vs. Guiron. His original role is restored there.
    • Wyvern was meant to attack Earth and Barugon and Jiger were meant to join forces with Gamera for the unmade "Destroy All Monsters" Gamera equivalent. Their original roles were restored here.
    • The Garasharps' alternate name "Garansharp" is derived from the Tokuma_Shoten Gamera manga.
  • One-Winged Angel: Quicksilver achieves this after injecting himself with a serum containing both Gamera and Gyaos' DNA.
  • Pay Evil unto Evil: During Ryuji's battle with General Quicksilver, Asakura stabs Quicksilver in the abdomen using the sacred dagger from Gamera 3: Revenge of Iris, right before Quicksilver can kill Ryuji.
  • Related in the Adaptation:
  • Reused Character Design:
    • While Barugon's design is generally similar to his Showa design and his design from the 2003 manga, he was given the small head casque from his design used in Alex Alcanter's Gamera comic for the Gamera the Great fanzine.
    • While Jiger's design is generally similar to her -Rebirth- design, she is slightly bulkier, with a more realistic-looking frill and a beak at the tip of her mouth.
  • Sealed Evil in a Can: Wyvern and Jiger. Wyvern arrived to Earth 200,000 years ago in a meteorite and Jiger was sealed within a tomb on Wester Island 4,500 years ago by the ancient Yamato Civilization.
  • Spared By Adaptation: Gamera didn't kill Jiger, but he did manage to seal her back in her tomb.
  • What If?: There will be an alternate timeline detailing what would happen if Ayana's parents didn't die during Gamera's battle with the Super Gyaos, and what would happen if Ayana didn't raise Iris from his egg, which would lead to Megumi eventually taking Iris under her wing and ultimately causing Iris to become a force of good.
