I was invited to an online game of chess. Now I'm in the void with a god helping create a world...By playing chess.
A Game of Chess is a Comedy/Slice of Life fic written in 12th May 2020 by Vongola Famiglia. It's currently in-progress.
It's about the protagonist, a guy named Cory being called into a Void dimension by a Physical Goddess named Faust to play a Cosmic Chess Game in order to develop the world.
A Game of Chess contains examples of:
- The Anti-God: Cory and Faust seem to be equal and opposites. Cory could be said to be an Anti-Villain Foil to the Real Life God of Evil Angra Mainyu.
- Cosmic Chess Game: The story follows the one between Faust and Cory in the form of very complicated chess.
- Dark Is Evil / Light Is Good: Darkness is chosen as the power of Evil while Light is chosen as the power of good. A weird example in that the roles are not explicitly explained as inherent as it implies they're interchangeable, simply assigned their morality for the sake of the Cosmic Chess Game.
- Deity of Human Origin: Cory, who became a God of Evil by agreeing to play with Faust.
- Designated Hero / Designated Villain: In-universe. Faust asigned the roles of Good and Evil to herself and Cory respectively without so much as consulting him and neither of their personalities really match their roles, it's worth noting neither of them care, see Lack of Empathy bellow.
- Friendly Enemy: Faust and Cory become friends very quickly, relaxing on a field.
- The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse: The Ponies Of The Apocalypse are four of Cory's knight pieces.
- God of Good / God of Evil: Faust and Cory take these roles for the game.
- Faust: "When you agreed to play you did more than became a obstacle for my ponies. You became a god."Cory: "So I'm a God of Evil and darkness to your ponies?"Faust: "Technically yes. As I am the God of Good and light to them. Though I'm sure that means nothing to us."
- Gone Horribly Right: Tuns out Cory, the person Faust chose for the God of Evil role, is a much better player than she thought.
- Lack of Empathy: Cory's lack of reaction to learning that he's now a God of Evil is surprisingly "Go with the flow"ish and he doesn't seem to care much about the suffering and death he's causing.
- Villain Protagonist: The fic follows the perspective of Cory who, while not as evil as ponies believe him to be, does have some Lack of Empathy problems.
- Worthy Opponent: Faust grows to consider Cory this, openly complementing him at times.
