Tropes associated with "A Bright Flash":

  • The All-Concealing "I": The entire story is told from the narrator's perspective which leads readers to think he's just a crazy disfigured person at first. Turns out, he's actually Godzilla.
  • Body Horror: The narrator becomes horribly disfigured and mutated due to an explosion. Later in the story, he describes people being burnt alive and desperately running towards the ocean in order to put out the flames and end their agony.
  • The '50s: The story takes place during the '50s, specifically the atom bomb testings at Bikini Atoll.
  • Foregone Conclusion: This story takes place before Godzilla's attack on Tokyo in 1954.
  • From Nobody to Nightmare: The narrator was just minding his own business when he was disfigured by a atomic bomb.
  • Humans Are Bastards: Well, the narrator certainly thinks so at least. It doesn't help that they unintentionally disfigured him via bomb testing.
  • Meaningful Name: The title of the story refers to the bright flash of light associated with atomic bomb explosions.
  • Names to Run Away from Really Fast: The narrator's name is Gojira. Yes, that Gojira.

  • Perspective Flip: It's a retelling of Godzilla (1954) from Godzilla's point of view.
  • The Reveal: At the end, it's revealed the story was told from the perspective of Gojira the whole time.
    "Gojira..."
  • Say My Name: "Gojira...."
  • Short Story: The story is around 800 words in length.
  • Stealth Prequel: It's a prequel to Gojira, hiding the connection until the very end when the protagonist's name is revealed.
  • Unstoppable Rage: The narrator manages to destroy an entire village without much resistance from the people living there.
