When a show about magic is put on such a restricted network likeDisney Channel, expect there to be tons of fanfiction, specifically of the Darker and Edgier variety.
These are recommendations made by Tropers for Wizards of Waverly Place fanfics, all of which have to be signed to stay on the page. Feel free to add a fanfic of your own to the list, but remember to use the template found here and to add it at the bottom of whichever folder you're adding it to.
You can also add to the current recommendations if you want. Refrain from posting Conversation in the Main Page though; that goes in the discussion page.
Note: When approaching Wizards fanfics, be weary that Justin and Alex are the Fan Preferred Couple for a reason. On fanfiction.net alone, Wizards has nearly 2000 pages worth of stories and half of those are tagged as purely Justin/Alex fics, nevermind the untagged/single character tagged ones that will still involve the two. Most summaries will warn of potential pairings, but some don't.
Many amazing stories focusing on the relationship between the siblings Justin and Alex Russo. The stories are beautifully written and the characters are really well portrayed, without getting into ooc-ness. Strongly recommended for those who absolutely love Jalex.
There's always one author who sticks out above all others and makes a big impression on a fandom with their amazingly detailed and well-written stories; for Wizards of Waverly Place, that author is omens. Focusing on Justin/Alex fics, omens crafts tales that not only seem plausible for our favorite sibling pair, but downright probable. Granted a topic like incest is easy to butcher and make sound silly and forced, but omens' stories flow naturally and flawlessly. Anyone interested in the Jalex fandom will find no better place to start than here.
Comments: A new and tragic perspective on the lives of the Russo family. One of the most touching stories ever written in the WOWP fandom, a sad story, but an outstanding work of art and imagination at the same time. Probably one of the best, if not the best fanfic in the history of Jalex.
Seconded. This story is probably the most influential story in the Jalex fandom, and should be tagged as a required read for anyone remotely interested in the pairing. If you're iffy on whether or not to ship 'Jalex', start with this. Your mind will be made up shortly. -So Riku
It's not just good as a shipping fic and a Jalex fic, but this troper also really enjoyed it just as a look at the psychological effects of being the victim of that, especially in the early chapters, when the author shows the isolation and paranoia of the situation. -grendalhopper
Synopsis:"I just don't want to miss you anymore." Future-Fic
Pairing: Justin/Alex
Comments: A story so poignant and gripping that you won't want to leave the computer until it's finished; and at over 50,000 words, be prepared to sit there a while. The story unfolds by showing a series of flashbacks to a point where the lives of the Russo's are changed forever. This story is a gem, and on par with In Fire, In Ice as one of the best Jalex stories ever written; arguably, the best. The story is written in inspiration by the song Lost by Michael Buble, and giving the song a listen before and after (and hell, even while) reading is recommended. Get tissues.
Synopsis: Harper holds a secret desire to be accepted by society. Getting drunk and pregnant by her best friend's 16-year-old brother may have hindered that goal.
Pairing: Max/Harper
Comments: A suprisingly good story, with realistic and wonderful storyline. Extremely well-written, in-character and above all, believable.

Pairing: Justin/Alex
Comments: A captivating story that'll hook you up instantly. It takes place in an Alternate Universe.
A tragically unfinished story. Probably the best Justin/Alex AU fic. -So Riku
Scratch that, the story has been updated after over a year long hiatus, with plans to finish soon!
Synopsis: Turnabout is fair play (and they're only playing).
Pairing: Justin/Alex
Comments: This is an amazing extension to the end scene of "Justin's Little Sister". You will love the amount of detail and description into their wrestling match between them. The challenges, one-upping the other until, suddenly, the childish play turns into something more.
Synopsis: "Careful, Justin; that almost sounds like 'what are you wearing?' territory there." [Justin/Alex]
Pairing: Justin/Alex
Comments: While Justin is in college, him and Alex start talking over the phone. Hilarity Ensues (along with a little awkwardness...) An 8000 word one-shot, very entertaining.
Synopsis: They promised that the story will have a happy ending. But how? How can you make a 'happily ever after' out of thin air? How do you fix a mistake made 20 years ago?
Pairing: Justin/Alex
Comments: Alex Russo and Justin Robins meet each other by a twist of fate that leads them into a plot filled with mystery and surprise. This person named May seems to tie everyone together and fill in the missing pieces, and they make it their mission to find her.
Synopsis: Justin and Alex compete over who can write the worse Jalex fic, giving birth to two horrible horrors in the world of bad writing.
Pairing: Implied Justin/Alex.
Comments: A hilarious short story, which portrays Justin and Alex's competitive relationship even in the most absurd situations. It's filled with humor, Justin and Alex are so in character, that the scene can almost be seen as a canon episode.
Synopsis: Justin has settled down and is happily married. Soon his perfect world crashes down when his estranged sister jumps back into his life. Future fic.
Pairings: Justin/Alex, Justin/Juliet
Comments: Very interesting storyline, with unexpected, wicked and twisted situations. A dark fic based on adultery, in which Justin and Alex's relationship is represented as villainous and harmful to every character in the story.
Synopsis: "You think you've got it bad? Look what's been following me around all day." In which Harper stalks, Zeke pines, and Justin and Alex devise a plot.
Pairing: Some crushes going around, but nothing too drastic.
Comments: A great story where Justin and Alex work together to solve their common problem. Could very well be an actual episode of the show.
Synopsis: Halloween episode continuation. While Justin and Alex sort through leftover candy, they remember the Halloween they spent together when they were kids.
Pairing: Nothing romantic. Maybe if you squint.
Comments: A well written, heartwarming story that shows an opinion of how Justin first started looking after Alex.
