Go To

This page is to capture all the references in Black Clover that are made to Fairytale Motifs.

  • Noelle Silva's is subtle, but of The Ugly Duckling. She wears a feathered blazer and is disowned by the House of Silva, which is associated with eagles, for her bad magic control, which she only improves on thanks to the kindness of the Black Bulls, a group of fellow outcasts, who help her gain confidence in herself. Her Valkyrie Armor, which she first manifests in a moment that highlights her growth as a mage up to that point in the story, has a feather motif, and mythical valkyries are associated with swans and often called "swan maidens".
  • Vanessa Enoteca's background is based on Rapunzel, where she is imprisoned from a young age by the Witch Queen, her mother, in order to use her powers and escaped when Yami broke her cage.
  • Charlotte Roselei's background is based on Sleeping Beauty. Her magic transforms her sword into roses and thorns, her surname is "Roselei", she's famed as the kingdom's Most Beautiful Woman, and she was cursed by a witch to lose control of her magic on her eighteen birthday, with the curse only broken by falling in love.
  • Secre Swallowtail/Nero and Prince Lumiere Silvamillion Clover are based on the swallow and prince from The Happy Prince. Secre turned Lumiere into a statue with the magic stones to save his life, at the cost of turning into a bird for five centuries. Here, however, she gives the statue of Lumiere the magic stones to unseal him in order to defeat Zagred. And despite her pleas, he lets her go to live out the rest of her life as he crumbles away.
  • Grey is based on Cinderella, where she is abused by her mother and stepsisters and incurs her stepsisters' wrath when her magic changes her to one of the stepsisters. The chapter on her backstory is even called "Cinderella Grey".
  • Charmy Pappitson's power is based on Little Red Riding Hood as seen on the color page of Chapter 251, with her Food Magic wolf disguised as a sheep a reference to the wolf who disguised itself as a grandma in the story.
  • Sylph is based on Tinker Bell from Peter Pan. She's nicknamed "Bell", appears as a small fairy with insect wings in a green minidress, and is a sassy girl who gets jealous when Yuno gives others attention.
  • Nacht Faust can summon four different devils (Gimodelo, Slotos, Plumede, and Walgner) based on a dog, donkey, cat, and rooster respectively, a reference to The Bremen Town Musicians. Despite being enslaved through Devil-Binding Rituals, the devils became loyal to Nacht because of the experiences in the human world they've had thanks to him after having lived in the underworld.
  • Jack the Ripper is based on Jack the Giant Killer, where he was a young hunter who killed a giant bear, the lord of a mountain who killed his father, when he was 13. This event began Jack's desire to fight strong enemies, and in the chapter his backstory is revealed in he fights against Dante, who can enlarge himself using his Body Magic.
  • Catherine is similar to The Evil Queen from Snow White, a Vain Sorceress obsessed with beautifying herself, and the Wicked Witch of the West from The Wizard of Oz, dolled up in the classic witch attire.
