Early Installment Weirdness / Jorel's Brother

Go To

  • In the beginning, the characters' animation was noticeably different, being slighty more fluid, movimentated and sketchy. Jorel's brother often appeared with sparkling pupils, but this trait rarely appears later on.
  • The old backgrounds were more poorly drawn and less colorful, in contrast to the lively, pretty backgrounds since the second season.
  • There were several running gags which were abandoned, such as Lara yelling loudly for Jorel's brother not to tell something to their family in spite of them hearing it now, Mr. Edson getting hit by Gigi's shoes, Zazá eating improbable objects, Mr. Edson getting told off by Danuza, among others.
  • The family used to have a housemaid and babysitter named Rose, who was a purple one-eyed octopus. She vanished from the series gradually despite appearing regularly in the first season, and only comes back briefly in the 100th episode as a continuity nod.
  • The old episodes were usually formed by normal childhood situations with surreal, fantastic elements, being inspired by things from the producers' lifes, usually from when they were kids. Later episodes became much more bizarre with a greater focus on the series' lore.
  • Season 1 was basically all episodic, with a few Continuity Nods thrown in, such as reappearance of characters. As of season two, the episodes mostly follow sagas and story arcs.
  • Until the fifth episode, crowds or background characters would be drawn in the same style as the backgrounds, specifically the colors and matte painting. They were upgraded to separate characters since then.
  • Modern technology didn't appear in the old episodes (besides Granny Gigi offhandedly mentioning using the internet in episode four), to make the show's setting more specific for the late 20th century. While the exact year is never consistent, later episode not only mention the internet more often, they also have flat-screen televisions and characters regularly using smartphones.
  • Lara seemed to be the only kid who truly liked Jorel's brother, with everyone else hating, not caring, or making fun of him. Most of the other girls preferred Jorel himself much more, while Ana Catarina had an affinity to William Shostners. This was later changed so they are usually kind to him, even if Jorel is more popular.
  • Speaking of Jorel, he was much more of a jerk with his brother as well, appearing to be proud of being more liked than him. According to an old character description, he did this due to resentment over not being the youngest child anymore.
  • In "Jornal do Quintal" (which seems to have been one of the first two episodes to be produced), Vovó Juju's intelligence is very limited, as she only spoke in few words asking for her favorite shoenote , thinks the dog Zazá is her shoe, and was also portrayed as Literal-Minded in one scene.
  • In two early episodes where the classroom appears, some random students appear drawn into the background, one of which looks more like a human-sized toy.
  • Many of the initial episodes were named after songs featured in them.
  • The first seven episodes had no title card, the eighth had no title shown at all, while the ninth episode onwards features title cards. Strangely, early Season 2 briefly started showing the title in a scene before reverting to title cards again.
  • The end cards were initially random scribbled or doodled pieces of paper, presumably made by the producers during childhood. After title cards were introduced, the end cards began having the same respective style as them. Two episodes in early Season 1 did not even have any end cards either, which could be due to being the first produced or they just forgot to make them.
  • Background characters used to be more varied in design and mostly random people. After more characters were created, they were changed to be mostly estabilished characters, with the background ones having a similar, Family Guy-esque design.
  • Lara seemed to be much more aggressive towards Jorel's brother at first, complaining about his lack of intelligence and hitting and slapping him, until this trait was totally removed. She herself was more ditzy in Season 1.
  • At first, the animators couldn't seem to decide what characters studied on Jorel's brother's class and which ones didn't, or which ones would get more prominence. Samantha never appeared there in the first season due to her original design being too large to fit correctly, while some minor characters would often appear at the class or the schoolyard, before being forgotten completely.
  • Some characters used to have slighty different designs in their first appearances. Rambozo used to have no chin drawn on his face, Carlos Felino originally wore a white tank top and then a black one before settling on his current outfit, and Ana Catarina used to wear a panty hose.
  • In the second appearance of the classroom, there is a sign telling students to throw the remains of their food in the trash after they're finished eating, and also briefly featured an skeleton there. Neither of these are present in any other episodes.
  • Billy Doidão and his friends used to be teenagers much older than Jorel's brother, until they wish to become younger in the 13th episode; now they're physically the same age as him. Billy keeps calling Jorel's brother a "brat" though, which becomes Hypocritical Humor.
  • In Carlos Felino's first songs, he sometimes sang in a higher pitch than his normal voice. This trait was later abandoned, except for the song "Amor Impossível" which appears in several episodes after its debut.
  • Granny Juju loved fruits in general, which was later altered for her Trademark Favorite Food to be avocados in specific (and to a lesser extent, yam).
  • There were some rooms in the house that inexplicably disappeared, most notably a hallway with blue balls where the bathroom and the brothers' room was located. Both rooms were moved to the stairs up the entrance since then. The bathroom itself also looked completely different, much more spacious and didn't resemble much an actual bathroom.
  • Rambozo randomly appears as a paramedic in an old episode. The second season episode "Shostners Shopping" introduced Jorginho's father Leo, who's a doctor. He likely would have appeared in that scene if he had already been created.
  • The Microwave Warriors used to be a Show Within a Show, but apparently were retconned into being filmed with live actors. One of the characters was called "Microwave Blue" by Granny Juju in their first appearance, before being renamed to "Microwave Totalflex".
  • There used to be other companies mentioned, such as the old television being branded TVQuase and Danuza's motorcycle labelled as a "Seamarra". Now, Shostners&Shostners is literally the one, only, single company that owns every single product, no matter what it is.
  • The older episodes had both a rougher art style and darker, more bizarre comedy, but the series became more childish as of Season 2 (though not completely; there are still some adult jokes and themes in multiple episodes). This is probably because Juliano Enrico was more used to producing adult-oriented works, so it took a while for him to get the hang on making a series aimed primarily at kids.
