YMMV / Jorel's Brother

Go To

  • Adaptation Displacement: Most people don't know the show was based on a comic strip published in the TV Quase magazine during the 2000s. It was meant to stay only as a comic strip, but during the second half of the 2000s, Juliano Enrico decided to adapt it to a cartoon and it got greenlit by Cartoon Network in 2009, premiering on television five years later.
  • Aluminum Christmas Trees: Jorel's brother spends most of the episode "Não Tenha Medo do Seu Medo" being paranoid he's being observed by ducks everywhere he goes, with Granny Gigi later explaining that his fear is specifically named Anatidaephobia. This sounds like just a fictional joke for the plot of the episode, but Anatidaephobia, the fear of being observed by ducks, is actually a real phobia that exists.
  • Broken Base:
    • The caricate voice acting for many of the characters, such as Jorel's brother himself, Rambozo, Perdigoto, and Dona Lola. Some fans find these to be among the best and funniest aspects of the series, while some people - including the show's detractors - find them insufferable and annoying to hear, especially Jorel's brother whiny voice as he is the main character and thus, speaks the most.
    • The show's caricate art style has been cited as a turn-off for many people who find it too ugly-looking to give any attention to the show. On the other hand, others appreciate the art style and character design for being unique and diverse. The Season 2 redesigns, which made everything more coloured and polished in contrast to Season 1, also divided opinions.
  • Common Knowledge: That "Jorel's brother's real name is Juliano Enrico, because the show is based on his childhood and the entire family is based on his one." In reality, all of the family members are only inspired by Juliano's family but most of them had their name changed, except for Jorel (and even then, his real life counterpart's name is written with an hyphen, as "Jor-El") and the dogs Tosh and Zazá. He also based some characters on more than one person, such as Mr. Edson being based on both his father and grandfather, and Danuza being based on both his mother and female cousin. In real life, Edson, Danuza, Nico, Gigi and Juju are respectively named Luiz Tadeu, Denize, Federico Nicolai, Guigui and Beth, respectively, so Juliano isn't necessarily the real name of Jorel's brother. Many people even cite, as proof, the last part of the theme song where a sticker on a notebook reads "Created by Juliano Enrico", when this is obviously just a creative credit for the show's creator.
  • Diagnosed by the Audience: Granny Juju. She isn't very bright most of the time and has a short attention span. Due to Early-Installment Weirdness, "Jornal do Quintal" amplified this even more, with her not being even able to speak actual sentences in that episode and mostly just repeating the same few words over and over.
  • Growing the Beard: Many believe season two was an improvement after updating the art style, and season three for starting more continuity and depth into the story of the show. Some fans didn't like the change, though.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: In the Season 4 episode "Jornal do Quintal Urgente", aired in April 2019, the kids are free from school and explain that "school is temporarily suspended because of generalized chaos around the planet". A little less than a year later, the exact same thing would happen in real life, albeit for a completely different reason.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Gesonel, the master of disguises! The very concept of a duck that disguises itself as several random objects or people, then suddenly pops out with his own theme tune, is so unconventional and funny that viewers get amused whenever he shows up in an episode.
  • Fountain of Memes: Granny Juju is regarded as the funniest character of the show, and several of her lines have become memes, usually due to her Innocently Insensitive or naive personality in general.
  • Friendly Fandoms: With fans of "Haunted Tales for Wicked Kids", another Brazilian CN show.
  • I Knew It!: In the later episodes of Season 2, Lara sadly tries to tell something to Jorel's brother, but is interrupted, leading some fans to believe something sad would happen involving her. Then she moved to Japan.
  • Memetic Mutation: Most involving Granny Juju.
    • "Ana Catarina... Que nome feio." Explanation
    • "Lavou o Zezinho?" Explanation
  • Narm: Jorel's brother's goofy high-pitched voice can cause even some genuinely emotive moments to lose some of their seriousness.
  • Older Than They Think: The series premiered in 2014, but existed as a comic strip as far back as 2003.
  • Periphery Demographic: The show is intended for kids, but attracted a large adult fanbase due to containing several references to the pop culture, objects and aesthetics of The '80s and The '90s, causing many people who grew up during that era to relate to the show and feel nostalgic watching it.
  • Sacred Cow: Granny Juju is, by no doubt, the most loved character from the show. Fans of the series generally won't take well any negative comments towards her.
  • Seasonal Rot: Some fans think of Season 3 and/or 4 to be inferior to the previous ones, due to multiple changes in it; namely, the plots becoming Denser and Wackier, a more heavy focus on continuity and background history, and the animation style being slightly altered again.
  • Rescued from the Scrappy Heap: Jorel, ironically, was initially very hated during Season 1 for bragging too much and acting superior to his younger brother. However, later seasons started depicting him as a more charismatic and emphatic brother, making him much more likeable for the audience.
  • Self-Fanservice: Lara's adult form from "Aterrorizante Vida Adulta", despite only appearing in one episode, is depicted in loads of fanart due to her attractive design, which is pretty fanservicey by itself.
  • Ugly Cute: The art style for most of the characters, specially Lara, is generally considered to look wonky but at the same time charming.
