The Investigators

     The Investigators in general
  • Badass Bookworm: The team includes a journalist, a ghostwriter, and a P.I. All of whom prefer to deal with their problems with their brains first and foremost, but all of whom are willing to get their hands dirty.
  • Badass Normal: With the notable exception of Vanessa all of them are just normal people facing monsters and worse and surviving.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: All them to some degree, to name them
    • Charlie had his parents die when ve was young, suffered in the foster system, had his only loved one Edward start acting strangely, had Edward cut him out of his life, and got impersonated and had ver inheritance stolen.
    • Robert's mother was a monster hunter who instilled a paranoia about the world and the things that could hurt him who ultimately disappeared mysteriously
    • Susan had an oppressive mother, a father who died suddenly when she was ten, and nearly died due to a manifestation of The Dark only surviving due to quick thinking.
    • Vanessa grew up with cut throat loan sharks for parents and got involved in crime at an early age leading her to jail time.
  • Four-Temperament Ensemble:
    • Charlie: Phlegmatic
    • Susan: Melancholic
    • Robert: Choleric
    • Vanessa: Sanguine
  • Ragtag Bunch of Misfits:
  • Who You Gonna Call?: A band of investigators/monster hunters willing to look into practically anything strange and who will try their best to resolve the situation. Best of all they do not serve any of the entities.

     Robert Carver
Former Gumshoe turned investigator played by Troy. He is a P.I from a family of monster hunters who tried to avoid following that legacy, but after the disappearance of his mother has had to dip his toes into the world of the supernatural in order to find her.
  • Cassette Craze: In his work he uses a cassette recorder to help record his thoughts and important information. Though, strangely he found that it has turned on by itself at least once...
  • Main.Code Of Honor: The normal must be protected from the weird.
  • Knows a Guy Who Knows a Guy: Has a web of connections due to his family, former co-workers, and own networking.
  • Occult Detective: Unintentionally on his part but thanks to his family's history of monster hunting and his career in private investigating he makes a pretty good one.
  • Private Detective: One professionally.
  • The Reliable One: By far the most reasonable and down to earth of the original four and even when compared with Susan and Charlie his level headedness stands out.

     Vanessa Valentini
Former Spooktacular turned investigator played by John. She's a magician with a dark and troubled past of criminal behavior, set out to try and right her prior wrongs. She also seems to have some strange powers which others don't...
  • The Atoner: In the past she was a selfish criminal who screwed over others frequently but once on the receiving end of that screwing realized she wanted to do better.
  • I Hate Past Me: She desperately wants to escape that past and be a different person.
  • Had to Be Sharp: As a result of growing up with her parents already involved in the rewound she had to be streetwise and able to defend herself to mange.
  • The Family That Slays Together: Her parents tried to invoke this but failed after she went through character development.
  • Guile Hero: Charming and streetwise, she doesn't like to get her hands dirty when possible.
  • Magicians Are Wizards: At least this magician seems to be. Able to pull off tricks which she has thus far assumed to be magical in nature, though given the universe she is in the truth is likely far darker.
  • Pet the Dog: Frequently thanks to using her powers to distract people from the suffering and fear they are going through, some notable examples being
    • Comforting Dr. Simon Farmer as he died and making illusions of his daughter for him to see her one last time.
  • Prison Changes People: While in prison she realized that she was a complete bastard and didn't want to be one anymore, spurring her into becoming the person she is currently. This had more to do with being screwed over by her friends and family and less to do with the prison system however.
  • Stage Magician: A professional one working with The Midnight Circus.

     Susan Keay
An investigator played by Raven. She is a journalist for the leftist news website The Fly, she works in their new age department, covering the strange and unexplained. Possible retaliative of Gerry Keay.
  • Constantly Curious: Has been one since a child, which caused her a lot of trouble with her very strict and religious mother, and has grown up to continue to be one and have that curiously drive her into a career in journalism.
  • My Beloved Smother: Her mother was incredibility controlling and she only manged to get out from her thumb via going to collage.

     Charlie Harker
An investigator played by Jason. He is the latest, and last of Rain Newport's victims as they had pretended to be him in order to gain his inheritance when ver grandfather, Edward Harker died.
  • Action Survivor: He did not sign up for the danger at all, only getting involved to help his friend with her journalism and getting dragged into a group constantly facing down horrors.
  • Apocalypse Maiden: Surely someone is, or will be, this to The Web's plan...
  • Bungled Suicide: Attempted to overdose on sleeping pills however failed to drift off and ended up as a result of how much pain he was in (and the drug induced hallucinations) calling for help and being found by a neighbor.
  • Creepy Good: Very goth and strange enough to unnerve many people, he is very much on the side of good.
  • Foster Kid: A lot of his core identity problems are a result of constantly having to try to fit in with all the different families he was put with. Through the 15 years he spent in the system he got good, mediocre, and down right abusive guardians and that has left a lot of damage.
  • Happily Failed Suicide: While his life has only gotten harder since his attempt, he is happy to be able to deal with those problems and to be able to live life thanks to his attempt failing.
  • Goth: He purposefully leans into the aesthetic and subculture as a way of self identification and handling rejection.
  • Orphan's Ordeal: While his parents died when he was too young to remember them, their along with the recent loss of his only surviving family, his grandfather Edward Harker, has left him with the main goal of finding out about his family's history and recording it all down.
  • Orphan's Plot Trinket: Currently his only inheritance from his grandfather, a hand mirror with some mystery properties.

     Rain Newport
Former Crooked played by Jason.
  • Cowardly Lion: Rain is typically someone who puts their own safety first, even to the point of abandoning the other investigators. However, when push truly comes to shove she can set that aside and do the right thing.
  • Face Death with Dignity: After a life time of running, acting like a coward, and being selfish the plan is for Rain to die a heroic, and dignified death.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Selfish, lying, prone to cowardice, and has even abandoned their team before. However deep down, is a good person who just fears being used, and who in the face of a problem far greater than himself will do the right thing.
  • Two Aliases, One Character: To Charlie up till somebody tells him something identifiable thanks to using the identity of Jackie Howards while defrauding Edward Harker. In general there are plenty of other characters who'd never realize that they are the same as one of their other fake names.

     Eabha O'Leary
Former Exile played by Raven.

This Campaign Contains Examples Of:

  • Abandoned Area: The tunnels underneath the labs of the Manhattan project where the nuclear heart lived.
  • Circus of Magic: The Midnight Traveling Circus is made up of strange and spectacular people. Not all of them have abilities but a notable amount do, and seem to try and use these abilities for the betterment of the world.
  • Cosmic Horror Story: Given the universe it's set in, and the game system it's played with, it very much is this.
  • Curiosity Is a Crapshoot: While the characters are investigators, that investigating can lead to both effectively handling problems and saving people, or to getting maimed traumatized or even killed.
  • Nothing Is the Same Anymore: Presumably after the next mystery (mystery 3)given that Rain will die and Eabha will become an avatar of the hunt.
  • The Reveal:
    • During mystery 2 (House Eat-It-All) Vanessa followed Alice down to the basement to find out who the girl's 'imaginary friend' Mx. Smiles was. Having successfully hid herself she got to see Mx. Smiles and find that he matched the exact description of The Distortion, revealing the campaign was for sure set in the universe of TMA.
  • We Hardly Knew Ye: As a result of the tonal shift along with the players moving on both Rain and Eabha are slated to die/become avatars only after three mysteries.
  • Wham Line: Plenty, given this is an on-going game with plenty of twists.
    • "You see a blonde man with large hands..."
  • Paranormal Investigation: Naturally given the game systems in use.
