Suicide bombing: the only way to get your pet to take a bath.note
"Fish sticks! Get your fish sticks here!"
Lou the Fish Vendor, "The Fry Cook Games"

SpongeBob SquarePants is well-known for humor that, by all accounts, should be tasteless, but is instead hilarious due to how over-the-top and outlandish it is.

  • "Texas":
    • SpongeBob and Patrick try to lure Sandy to their Texas Party at the Krusty Krab so she'll stay in Bikini Bottom... By getting her to chase them there by making fun of her home state. It works... but it also causes Sandy to go on a manhunt for them if they don't take back what they said. The fact that the episode ends with Patrick making one final joke at Texas' expense cements it.
SpongeBob: Oh, so we shouldn't say anything bad about... (moons Sandy with his pants on) TEX-ASS!!!
Sandy: (blushing in anger) I'm warning you, SpongeBob!
SpongeBob: Look, Patrick, I'm Texas! (bad southern accent) Duh! Howdy, y'all!
Patrick: I'm Texas, too! (starts singing) Get a dog, little longie! Get a DAWG, little longie!
Sandy: Y'ALL BEST CUT IT OUT!!!
SpongeBob: (starts singing while Patrick does armpit farts) The stars at night are dull and dim, whenever they have to be over DUMB, OLD, STUPID TEXAS!!! (Sandy is boiling mad right now as SpongeBob's body is now the shape of Texas) Hey, Patrick, what am I now?
      Patrick: Uh, stupid?
      SpongeBob: No, I'm Texas!
Patrick: What's the difference?! (both laugh uproariously)
    • Sandy chasing them in violent rage is disturbing at first. Patrick being lassoed backwards over the horizon and randomly exploding into a mushroom cloud makes the scene funny again.
  • In "Bubble Buddy", SpongeBob leaves Bubble Buddy to dig a fish out of the sand at high tide. He doesn't, and the fish drowns, confirmed when we see his ghost. The joke is already extremely dark, but what pushes it beyond the pale is the revelation that Bubble Buddy is alive and sentient... meaning he just stood there and watched the guy drown.
  • In "Dying for Pie":
Mr. Krabs: The boy cries you a sweater of tears, and you kill him.
  • In "Band Geeks", the two flag twirlers twirling so fast they fly into the air and crashing into a blimp, which then explodes is funny, but it definitely crosses the line. Having all the other band members respond like it's a genuine tragedy, complete with all the other members placing their hands over the hearts respectfully while one of the trumpet players plays "Taps" (and all the while, Squidward is curled up in a sad little ball of defeat on the ground) crosses it more times than there are episodes of SpongeBob.
  • In "Gary Takes A Bath", SpongeBob attaches a bomb to his chest just to get Gary to take a bath, which is already excessive yet hilarious. Unfortunately, Gary has No Sympathy and is content to let his owner blow himself to bits, making it even funnier.
  • The story Squidward tells SpongeBob in "Graveyard Shift" about a fry cook who acccidentally cut off his hand while cutting patties:
Squidward: And then, he got hit by a bus! And then, at his funeral, they FIRED him!
  • In "The Fry Cook Games", Patrick botches a vault over a fryer, sending boiling oil into the audience. Then:
  • The premise of "The Bully" can strike hard for those who have been or are a victim of bullying. But once Flats (the bully in question) begins chasing SpongeBob with a garbage truck, it becomes too bizarre and goofy to take seriously. If that doesn't do it, there's also the scene of the Bikini Bottomites assaulting an old man after mistaking him for SpongeBob's bully... which wouldn't be so funny if said old man didn't somehow get better and even cheerfully talk to the locals, unaware they're about to whoop him again.
Harold: How many times do we have to teach you this lesson, old man?!
Old Fish: I love the young people!
  • Nasty Patty is among the most line-crossing of the Golden Age episodes, which is EXACTLY why it's so hilarious to watch.
    • The health inspector choking on a fly and knocking himself unconscious is an amusingly dark bit of slapstick, though not overtly funny on its own. SpongeBob and Mr. Krabs genuinely believing they killed him, and going out of their way to bury the body is where the line-crossing really begins. By the time they, as well as the police, think the inspector is a ZOMBIE, and even the narrator is ripping on them for their stupidity, the line has been torn to shreds.
  • In "Mid-Life Crustacean", the last part of SpongeBob and Patrick's night out involves a panty raid, where they secretly raid girls of their undergarments. Mr. Krabs tags along, and it's revealed the house they've been raiding was the home of Mr. Krabs' mother. The fact that they've been doing this every night bumps it higher into this territory.
  • Squidward getting repeatedly and violently maimed by the Sea Bear in "The Camping Episode". Brutal, yet hilarious. Even more so when the Sea Bear attacks him for literally no reason after having already been attacked several times.
Squidward: What did I do that time?
Spongebob: I dunno, I guess he just doesn't like you!
Patrick: Pretend to be someone else!
(moments later, Squidward is attacked yet again)
  • Patrick writing an awful song in "Sing a Song of Patrick"? Not that funny. Patrick writing a song so bad it kills the band who recorded it and causes mass riots all over Bikini Bottom? Hilarious.
  • In "What Ever Happened to SpongeBob": Squidward laughs while saying this quote:
Squidward: If I knew that was the last time I've seen SpongeBob, I would have slammed the door in his face even harder!
  • The entirety of "Krusty Krushers". Spinning around SpongeBob and Patrick to pieces, cementing the two in the ring (either the first or second cross), autographing the wet cemented remains with, "Jim was here" on SpongeBob and "My foot was here" on Patrick (hilarious either way), or earlier, them getting gargled only to be returned to normal with a toilet plunger. Bear in mind that SpongeBob and Patrick don't mind the pain at all, and actually giggle when the wrestlers write on them while they're encased in cement.
  • The PSA "Endless Summer": Mr. Krabs intentionally accelerating global warming for a get rich quick scheme, flat out evil; Spongebob being so convinced it's a good idea that he turns the Krusty Krab into a greenhouse gas tsunami which renders Bikini Bottom uninhabitable that same day, flat out hilarious.
