Established during 1965 in England by Ray Dolbynote ; Dolby Laboratories
(Often shortened to just Dolby Labs) is a sound post-production and equipment firm for hundreds of films and TV projects, including Saturday Night Live, The Watch (2012), Alien, Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Rain Man.
They are better known outside of the sound production space as the creators of Dolby Stereo, one of the earliest multichannel audio encoding schemes (which was brought to home theaters under the name "Dolby Surround"), as well as its successors, Dolby Digital, and more recently, Dolby Atmos.
They also created a noise reduction scheme for analog cassette tapes aptly named "Dolby Noise Reduction", which was designed to minimize tape hiss during cassette playback. The better known consumer version is actually referred internally as "Dolby B", with a second version coming earlier, "Dolby A", being used in recording studios to eliminate tape hiss in a music production space.
Aside from sound codecs, they also created an HDR (High Dynamic Range) format called Dolby Vision, which includes dynamic metadata allowing film editors to adjust HDR data for each individual frame. It became the industry standard dynamic HDR format, beating out HDR10+. Compare to HDR10, the other industry standard HDR format, which only allows for static metadata and is more limited, but is compatible with more displays.
