The Anime Network is a Video-On-Demand (for cable and satellite) and was an online streaming service. They mostly show new anime licensed by Sentai Filmworks, live-action drama licensed by Switchblade Pictures, and older titles from ADV Films. From 2004 to 2008, they also operated a 24/7 linear cable network, the first in North America to be dedicated to anime. For those with Time Warner Cable, Anime Network is now found on Cutting Edge on Demand. Anime Network programming was also available for streaming on Hulu, but only in subtitles.

In June 2017, it was announced that The Anime Network would discontinue their online streaming service, shifting its focus exclusively to their cable and Video-On-Demand services. HIDIVE, a new streaming service that acquired the Anime Network Online assets, launched on June 20, 2017 and is currently streaming titles from Section23 Films and the former Anime Network Online service in addition to new simulcasts.

As of April, 2022, it is the only other service besides Crunchyroll simulcasting new anime, though at a much lower volume: In April 2022, Crunchyroll had 40 shows, and HiDive had 6. By 2023, it was up to 10 simulcast shows per season.
