    In General
  • Civil War: Darkstalker mentions one period where they were without a queen, though whether this was a succession war like the SandWings had remains to be seen.
  • Dishing Out Dirt: Exposure to mud strengthens and heals them.
  • Emancipated Child: MudWings don't have any relationship with their parents, and instead form strong family units with their siblings, with the eldest - the "BigWings" - looking after the others.
  • Help Mistaken for Attack: MudWing hatchlings instinctively try to help their clutchmates hatch by breaking their eggs. Dragons from other species mistake this for infanticide.
  • Hufflepuff House: After Winter Turning gave more focus to the IceWings, they are now the least-focused on tribe. Even when Clay got to visit their kingdom, it was only for two chapters, and there's no MudWing protagonist in the second arc or (so far) part set in the Mud Kingdom.
  • Mighty Glacier: Are known for their strength and their armored scales.
  • Playing with Fire: They can breathe fire, but only if warm enough.
  • No-Sell: MudWings hatched from blood-red eggs are fireproof.
  • Parental Neglect: Mothers and fathers don't care for their dragonets once they're born. Clay's mom even SOLD him for some cows!
  • Theme Naming: MudWings are often named after various shades of brown, swamp animals, minerals, or swamp plants.
  • Undying Loyalty: Due to their instincts and how they live their lives, MudWing siblings are highly dedicated to one another. In all their history, there has never been a MudWing queen challenged by her siblings; it's always been her daughters that do it.

    Moorhen

Queen Moorhen

"You're very small to be in charge of saving the world."

She is one of the oldest queens in Pyrrhia, described to be as large as Morrowseer. Like every other MudWing queen, she has not and will most likely never be challenged for the throne by her sisters, because her siblings are a very tightly knit group and they would never try to kill each other.

  • God Save Us from the Queen!: Subverted. She has one of the most positive portrayals of any of Pyrrhia's queens in Arc 1, being a competent, beloved monarch who is agonizing over the cost to her tribe in the war. When Sunny visits her dreams she's agonizing over the coming invasion of the Ice Kingdom, dreaming of her dead siblings.
  • Large and in Charge: She's a very large Bigwings, and the queen of the MudWings.
  • Minor Major Character: She's the queen of the MudWings, but she's appeared for a grand total of one chapter in the entire series.
  • Trapped in Villainy: Doesn't want to be part of the war, but is forced to pick a side to protect her tribe.
  • Tough Leader Façade: She is a popular queen who is capable of carrying out ruthless war plans, but she is secretly horribly afraid for her siblings and her tribe, leading them into a war that she was forced into.

    Reed

Reed

  • The Chains of Commanding: His job as Bigwings can be difficult, especially because he still feels guilty about letting his sister die, and wonders whether Clay would have been able to save her if he was not kidnapped.
  • Child Soldiers: Is forced to fight in battles when he is only six years old.
  • Intro-Only Point of View: In "The Dark Secret".
  • Large and in Charge: He is a Bigwings, meaning he's the largest of his siblings group and also the leader.
  • The Leader: Of his sibling group.

    Ochre

Ochre

  • Big Eater: Like Clay.
  • Didn't Think This Through: He and Flame ask to a NightWing guard where Starflight is so they can kill him to fulfill Morrowseer's task. The guard throws them in prison, screaming that foreign dragons have come to kill their dragonets.
  • Evil Counterpart: To Clay. They's both Big Eaters who are part of their respective sets of Dragonets of Destiny, but Clay is a kind and loyal dragonet whereas Ochre is greedy and unfriendly.
  • Fat Bastard: He's overweight and not at all a nice dragon - even Sunny can't stand him.

    Marsh
  • Nervous Wreck: Crane's death badly affected him; when he appears in Moon Rising Moon notices that he's shaking and constantly nervous.

    Pheasant

    Cattail
  • Parental Neglect: Not that MudWings are the best parents in general, but selling one of your dragonets for a few cows? That's low.

    Crane

Crane

  • Take a Moment to Catch Your Death: How she dies in Sora's flashback. She has just saved one of her siblings and is looking back at them proudly when Icicle jumps up behind her and slashes her throat.
  • Posthumous Character: She dies during the first book and never shows up alive except in a flashback.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: She only appears during a flashback, and dies in the first book, but her death has a huge impact on her sister Sora that Sora sets off a bomb in Jade Mountain Academy trying to kill the dragon who killed Crane, which backfires, killing Carnelian and Bigtail, injuring Tamarin, and forcing Sora and Umber to go on the run.

    Umber

Umber

  • All Love Is Unrequited: He has a thing for Qibli, who has a thing for Moon.
  • Child Soldiers: Fought in Queen Moorhen's army at only six years old.
  • Commonality Connection: With Carnelian, when they realize that they fought on the same side of the war.
  • Hyper-Awareness: Reed notes that he notices everything, and that he has learned to always believe him when he says something's wrong.
  • It's Probably Nothing: Says this in The Dark Secret, right before IceWings attack.
  • Put on a Bus: Escorts Sora back home after her crimes are revealed.
  • Reluctant Warrior: Fought with his siblings in the War of SandWing Succession, even though he wasn't personally invested in it.

    Sora

Sora

Clay's younger sister.
  • Beware the Nice Ones / Beware the Quiet Ones: She is a shy and friendly bookworm. Unless you're a Jerkass who killed her sister and then became her roommate while muttering in your sleep about your plans for murder...
  • Crime of Self-Defense: She notes that part of her reason for trying to kill Icicle was self-defense, after hearing her talk in her sleep about murdering dragons, which turned out to mean Queen Scarlet was dream visiting her, but that's still not enough to prevent her from having to flee Jade Mountain with Umber.
  • Cute Bookworm: She's a very shy and fragile dragon who spends most of her time reading books in Starflight's library.
  • Cynicism Catalyst: Crane's murder really messed Sora up. It motivates her to break the ceasefire agreement so she can murder the dragon responsible.
  • Murder by Mistake: Her attempt on Icicle's life inadvertently kills Carnelian and Bigtail. Bombs are like that.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: She feels utterly horrible about accidentally killing Carnelian and Bigtail and injuring Tamarin when she tried to kill Icicle, leading to her spending all of her time in the hospital with Tamarin, completely traumatized.
  • Odd Name Out: Her name (besides being Japanese rather than of English origins) means "sky" rather than relating to earth as her siblings' names do.
    • Actually, it is far more likely that she is named after the sora, a marsh bird native to North America.
  • Pay Evil unto Evil: Repays her sister's murder by breaking the ceasefire agreement to murder the one responsible and her methods cost several dragons their lives and injure a close friend.
  • Put on a Bus: Flees with Umber so she won't get punished for accidentally murdering Carnelian and Bigtail.
  • Shell-Shocked Veteran: She is traumatized by her experience in the war, especially Crane's death.
  • Shrinking Violet: She can barely speak to strangers, and avoids doing so if at all possible.
  • The Smart Guy: Of Clay's siblings. She loves scrolls and is the only one who reads them.
  • Sympathetic Murderer: The plot of Moon Rising revolves around Moon and Qibli trying to find who set the bomb in the history cave and killed Carnelian and Bigtail, which turns out to be her. However, she is portrayed sympathetically due to only intending to kill the dragon who killed her sister and who she had reason to think was plotting a murder of her own, and being shown to be traumatized by the war and her sister's death.

    Mayfly

Mayfly

  • The Medic: She is the best doctor in Possibility.
  • Noble Bigot: She is prejudiced against IceWings thanks to being attacked by them during the war, but is otherwise kind to all dragons, including IceWings themselves.
  • Tragic Bigot: Her prejudice against IceWings comes from being hit by an IceWing's frost breath, which left her with permanent scars.

    Bullfrog

Bullfrog

  • The Big Guy: He's described as utterly massive, being twice the size of the other dragons in the Pantala strike team.
  • The Chosen Many: He's the MudWing representative of the Super Secret Stealth Team traveling to Pantala to fight the Breath of Evil.
  • Sarcasm-Blind: Qibli ribs him about how he's The Quiet One during the journey to Pantala and he never cottons on that he's joking.
  • Terse Talker: He doesn't talk much, and when he does, he keeps his sentences short. When he explains what he knows of the Scorching to Cricket and Luna, both of them are briefly surprised because it's the most he's ever said at once.
