House of Representatives

Speaker

    Marwood

Jim Marwood

Speaker

Portrayed By: David Rasche

The Speaker of the House of Representatives and a member of the opposite party. In the later seasons he is in league with Tom James and attempts to deliver James the presidency by refusing to hold another House vote, though their actions inadvertently lead Laura Montez to be elected.

Congress

    Furlong

Roger Furlong

Portrayed By: Dan Bakkedahl

A highly irascible Ohio Congressman who ran and lost the election for governor of Ohio. In Season 6, he is the House Minority Leader.

  • Deadpan Snarker: Furlong constantly makes sarcastic remarks (which are usually vicious insults).
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones:
    • He's a Jerkass, but that's a secret he keeps from his wife. His wife also calls him "dad" (which is what parents tend to call each other), which suggests that he's also a father.
    • In the Grand Finale, he takes care of a wheelchair-bound and senile Will. Considering what just happened to Selina and Gary in the same episode, this really says something about Roger's character.
  • Everybody Has Standards: When Doyle fires Teddy for sexually harassing Jonah, Furlong is shocked and disgusted by this revelation (although he thinks Doyle is making a joke at first).
  • Jerkass: Roger is an absolutely horrible asshole to pretty much everyone he meets.
  • Mean Boss: He constantly verbally abuses his poor assistant, Will, usually with homophobic remarks.
Furlong: I'd make more money if I installed will here as a full-time gloryhole greeter at a Georgetown gay bar. Which I'm pretty sure he already does part-time. Right, Will?
    Will: Yes, sir.
  • Morality Pet: He won't cuss or insult anyone or even get upset in the presence of his wife, who won't even tolerate psuedo-cuss words like "crud" from him.
  • Sir Swears-a-Lot: Almost everyone swears on Veep, but Furlong stands out: he can hardly say a few sentences without obscenity, as shown in "Congressional Ball":
Selina: Roger, you want to walk us through the drill right now? And would you please, please try and keep it clean?
Furlong: Madam President, tomorrow night is the president's annual holiday party for congressional members and their families. Ma'am, you'll need to make the initial approach. Ben will keep the offer straight. Kent will keep a running tally. Tom, you'll be in charge of putting out any fires. And once you're all done with them, I'll move in and squirt a half gallon of ropey jism into their modeled congressional cornholes.
Selina: Oh, you made it so far and then you just...
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: There are some hints that he is actually, in his abrasive, verbally abusive and rather warped way, quite fond of Will. They're never seen apart, for all the verbal abuse they appear to be close enough that Will feels able to confide in his boss regarding his wife's fertility issues, and the final scene involves Roger wheeling around the now-senile Will in a wheelchair, suggesting he acts as Will's carer.

    Pierce

Owen Pierce

Portrayed By: Paul Fitzgerald

A socially awkward congressman and previously one of Selina's rivals for the presidential nomination. He is described as completely incompetent. He holds great respect for President Meyer, and helps her swing a vote against his own wishes to protect her.

Aides

    Will

Will

Portrayed By: Nelson Franklin

Furlong's Congressional aide.

  • Extreme Doormat: He lets Furlong insult him (and his wife) and push him around (and he's said that he actually does enjoy his job). He's also told Furlong that he and his wife have been struggling to have children due to his wife's small uterus, which he unsurprisingly uses as one of his insults. Taken to its logical extreme in the Distant Finale, where the now-senile Will is carted around on a wheelchair by Furlong to be the butt of his jokes.
Furlong: [while insulting Jonah] But guess what? That's about as likely as Will putting a baby in his wife's polyp-sized uterus!
Will's wife: Why did you tell him?
Will: What? I had to tell someone.
  • Hidden Depths: In a deleted scene for "Kissing Your Sister", he's actually been secretly planning Furlong's death and is trying to Make It Look Like an Accident.
  • One Name Only: His last name is never given. According to the prop auction, it's Suckfreely.
  • Unfortunate Names: His last name is Suckfreely, although whether that's his surname at birth or Furlong made him change it to that is left to the viewer's imagination.
