Characters / The Warlock of Firetop Mountain

Go To

Whilst the original gamebook leaves fleshing out your character's identity entirely up to you, the video game adaptation produced by Tin Man Studios instead presents you with an array of potential characters to take into Zagor's dungeon, each with their own distinct stats, backstory, personal quest and abilities. Only four of these characters are playable by default; Lunika Ekaadi, Dekion Strom, Alexandra of Blacksand, and Arran Gottspeed. The others must be unlocked by purchasing them with "souls" that are harvested from each enemy the player kills during their runs through the dungeon.

See here for tropes related to the titular warlock.

Lunika Ekaadi

A spear-wielding warrior-woman and explorer, driven by wanderlust and a fascination with excitement. Whilst she probably would have come to Firetop Mountain anyway, she has been lured here in pursuit of a powerful and sacred relic of the Old Gods known as the Amulet of Ashra, which was stolen by an evil fire elementalist named Kosben Minamin, who rumor says has become one of the underlings of Zagor. Her special skills are her Dexterity, which allows her to easily complete certain feats of speed and agility, and her Keen Eyes, which can spot hidden dangers and traps.
  • Combat Pragmatist: One of her special attacks is to smear her spear's blade with poison before attacking.

Dekion Strom

An arrogant and greedy but skilled mercenary, Dekion was left the sole survivor of a merchant caravan that was hit by bandits on the way to Zengis, stranding him in foreign territory with almost nothing to his name. In particular, a goblin named Rotgut stole a valuable locket that Dekion received many years ago in Kaynlesh-Ma from a priest of Arantis, and had been carrying as a nest egg. Pursuing Rotgut to retrieve this locket is what brings Dekion into Firetop Mountain. His special skills are his Dexterity, which allows him to easily complete certain feats of speed and agility, and his Keen Eyes, which can spot hidden dangers and traps.
  • Bow and Sword in Accord: Wields a hand crossbow and a longsword as his weapon of choice, allowing him to fight at multiple ranges.

Alexandra of Blacksand

A famous female warrior, Alexandra has had a long and profitable association with assorted benevolent wizards, and has amassed a reputation for completely quests quickly and diplomatically, preferring to avoid conflict where she can. She comes to Firetop Mountain at the behest of a sorcerer named Kith, who wants her to discover a ruby called "the Eye of the Cyclops", retrieve it, and then make sure it gets into Zagor's hands, though she has no idea why her patron wants her to do this. Her special skills are her vast Education, which gives her a much wider array of knowledge than the typical adventurer, and the fact that she is naturally Lucky.
  • Badass Bookworm: Any character with the Education special attribute is this, being a combat-capable adventurer whose knowledge of things can reveal all kinds of secrets that are otherwise hidden, such as being able to read secret messages in foreign tongues or knowing useful titbits about monsters or traps.
  • Born Lucky: Any character with the Lucky special attribute is blessed by fortune, which manifests both as a higher than average Luck stat and in gameplay by rendering certain Luck checks into either Skill checks or automatic successes.

Arran Gottspeed

Hulking, powerfully built Arran relies on fast, brutal assaults and his ability to endure considerable punishment to crush whatever stands in his way. Those who have met him and walked away speculate he may have giant's blood somewhere in his ancestry. He dreams of competing in and winning the famous Trial of Champions in Chiang Mai, and this dream has brought him to Firetop Mountain; the Trial reputedly involved battling a fearsome minotaur, and supposedly another minotaur is amongst the monsters residing in Firetop Mountain. Arran wishes to slay this creature as part of his training. Whilst his Fearsome appearance does allow him to cow some denizens of Firetop Mountain, he suffers from Illiteracy, making it impossible for him to benefit from any knowledge that has been written down.
  • The Big Guy: He has the highest health of the four starting heroes.
  • Dual Wielding: Carries two swords, and relies on his ability to hit multiple times in multiple directions to overwhelm his foes.

Wanushu

Once champion of the Boneridge clan, one of the tribal groups that inhabit the Plain of Bones, Wanushu turned his back on his people and took the skills he had honed hunting his homeland's dinosaurs to become a beast-tracker, working for whoever is willing to pay him good money to capture beasts and creatures from across Allansia. Having achieved such feats as securing a rare and deadly Chaos Manticore for Baron Sukumvit's infamous Deathtrap Dungeon and capturing a poison-spewing minotaur, he has come to Firetop Mountain for his latest mission: to capture a particularly intimidating specimen of the local giant spiders. His special skills are his Dexterity, which allows him to easily complete certain feats of speed and agility, and his Fearsome appearance, which he can use to intimidate some of the more cowardly denizens of the mountain.
  • Egomaniac Hunter: After defeating the giant spider, he decides to venture deeper into Firetop Mountain in hopes of capturing the rumored dragon that nests near its peak rather than take his quarry and leave.

Krea Datura

A skilled archer from the nomadic mercenary clans of the Kazan steppes, Krea is a long-time ally of the benevolent wizard Astragal. Her special skills are her vast Education, which gives her a much wider array of knowledge than the typical adventurer, and her Keen Eyes, which can spot hidden dangers and traps.

Hannabella Dehab

Born into wealth and comfort as the daughter of a successful merchant in the town of Silverton, Hanabelle left seeking adventure and excitement. Though she has repeatedly amassed a great fortune, she's always given it away to prevent herself from being tempted to return to her former easy life. She comes to Firetop Mountain after being hired to investigate the dwarven ruins in the lower parts of the mountain and search for a lost holy relic of the god of Miners and Metalworkers. Her special skills are Keen Eyes, which can spot hidden dangers and traps, and her preternatural Luckiness.
  • Born Lucky: Any character with the Lucky special attribute is blessed by fortune, which manifests both as a higher than average Luck stat and in gameplay by rendering certain Luck checks into either Skill checks or automatic successes.
  • Easy Come, Easy Go: Invoked. Hannabella wants to avoid being seduced by an easy life of wealth and luxury, so she makes a point of giving away her money almost as fast as her adventuring earns it. This is reflected in gameplay by giving Hanabella a number of unique scenes where she can offer money to the denizens of the dungeon.

Landov Lowen

Born the youngest son of a Salamonian noble, Landov has spent many years as a wandering preacher of the goddess of peace, Usrel. Though he would be enemy to no man or beast, he is not afraid to crush evil wherever it rears its ugly head. He is dispatched to Firetop Mountain to recover an infamous book on demonology, the Compendium Stultitia, at the command of the King of Salamonia (who happens to be Landov's third cousin twice removed). His special strengths are the Righteous powers he wields as a cleric, and his vast Education, which gives him a much wider array of knowledge than the typical adventurer.
  • Fantastic Racism: Landov loathes all who practice arcane magic, regardless of their specialty or their personality.

Gilfane

An elf from the Darkwood, Gilfane is a willing ally and agent of the benevolent wizard Yaztromo, and is often sent far from the borders of his homeland to undertake the wizard's bidding — in this case, he has been sent to seek out an Elementalist of Air in hopes of earning her aid in defeating Zagor. Whilst highly tolerant of dwarves, to the point his typical adventuring partner is a dwarf agent of Yaztromo's called Kagand, he despises both users of black magic, especially necromancers, and the dark elves. His special skills are his Dexterity, which allows him to easily complete certain feats of speed and agility, and his vast Education, which gives him a much wider array of knowledge than the typical adventurer.
  • Elves Versus Dwarves: Subverted, Gilfane has no problem with dwarves, but reserves his bitter hatred for dark elves.
  • Fantastic Racism: Gilfane despises dark elves and orcs, to the point he cannot attempt to disguise himself as an orc, nor will he interact peacefully with any of them.
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: Gilfane's quest is to talk to the resident Master of Air in the western part of the dungeon, and convince her to aid him in defeating Zagor. Except it turns out that all the elementalists are aligned with Zagor, forcing Gilfane to defeat them and then take down Zagor himself.

Twenty Three

One of the Rhino-Men engineered as super-soldiers by the evil wizard Zharradan Marr, Twenty Three grew sickened at the actions he and his fellows were ordered to perform and ultimately deserted. Ever since then, he has become a mercenary, seeking to make amends for the evils of his past by helping those in need and righting wrongs. Ultimately, this quest to restore his lost honor has brought him to Firetop Mountain, as he has heard of a mystical chamber deep within where he can undertake a trial of spirits that will prove his valor once and for all. His quest is hampered by his Illiteracy, whilst his Oversized status is both a blessing and a curse; it makes him massively durable and lets him crush smaller foes with ease, but also prevents him from fitting into some areas where human adventurers could venture.
  • The Brute: With a whopping 24 health and the ability to deal 3 damage per strike instead of the usual 2 damage, Twenty Three is a combat monster. His inability to read or hide, and limited means of speech, means he generally has little option outside of combat.
  • Dual Wielding: Wields a mace and a sword in either hand, allowing him to attack in three directions.
  • Enemy Without: Twenty Three's personal quest requires him to find a chamber of spiritual trials in the western part of the Domain of the Dead, where he must battle the Demons of Fear, Guilt and Regret; literal manifestations of his inner demons.
  • Horn Attack: His Rhino Charge ability lets him dash across the battlefield, crushing and shoving any foes in his way.
  • Rhino Rampage: A massive, strong, rhino-based Beast Man.
  • Shoot the Shaggy Dog: If he defeats Zagor and chooses to leave with the treasure, Twenty Three sets up camp in the forest at the foot of Firetop Mountain, due to the fear his appearance invokes in the local villagers. His plans to move on to more hospital climes with his newfound wealth are interrupted when he is ambushed by Thugruff, the half-troll servant of his creator, Zharradan Marr. Thugruff shoots Twenty Three with a dart covered in paralytic poison, then drags the insensate Rhino-Man back to his creator and an unspecified grisly fate.

Alfina Skyrider

Born to the Frostwind Barbarians, the young, impulsive and glory-hungry Alfina wasn't satisfied when she attained the coveted rank of Skyrider, the famed pegasus-mounted cavalry warriors of her people. Her desire for fame and glory drove her to become an adventurer, but she has specifically come to Firetop Mountain in search of an alchemist who might be able to help cure a plague that is ravaging her tribe's pegasi.

Ellion G'Aarak

Half-Orc daughter of an orcish mercenary and a human mother, Ellion grew up in the mean streets of Port Blacksand, but was saved from a life of petty thuggery by a priest of the sun goddess, Glantanka, who punished her for trying to mug him, but then took her in and cared for her. She has since become a priestess of Glantanka in her own right, and taken to adventuring, armed with holy magic, sword, shield and crossbow. Her reason for coming to Firetop Mountain is personal; she believes her father, Gishrak G'Aarak, is working for Zagor, and she wishes to confront him. Aside from her Righteous powers, her Orcish blood is her greatest asset in this mission, as orcs are more willing to talk to a halfbreed than to a human.
  • Automatic Crossbows: Her Crossbow Volley special attack lets her shoot at three targets simultaneously.
  • Bow and Sword in Accord: Wields a mace in one hand and a crossbow in the other.
  • Daddy Had a Good Reason for Abandoning You: If the player chooses to talk to Gishrak G'Aarak instead of attacking him on sight, the orc mercenary explains that he genuinely loved Ellion and her mother, but he feared they would come to harm because of him, so he left, hoping to spare them the suffering he was certain his presence would bring.
  • Extreme Omnivore: Other characters generally regard Orcish cuisine with disgust. Ellion, being a half-orc, has no problems with it. She has the unique scene of being able to sit down in the orc dining hall and share soup with the orcs early in the mountain, and genuinely enjoys it. If she enters the kitchen, and it's recommended that she do so because the cook can point her towards her father's presence in the mountain, she initially thinks the cook's latest concoction smells delicious... until she sees him spit in it. In contrast, even Twenty Three reacts to the stewpot's smell with disgust.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: Human mother, orc father.
  • Logical Weakness: Although Ellion is half human and a devoted servant of one of the Gods of Order, she is still by blood an orc, and thus a creature of Chaos. As a result, she is vulnerable to effects that specifically target orcs or creatures of Chaos; this means she cannot take the Eye of the Iron Cyclops as a weapon against Zagor, suffering 5 damage if she touches it once and then being destroyed if she tries again, and if she attempts to drink from the healing fountain north of the ruined dwarven hall, she dies, as the magical liquid is poisonous to orcs and goblins.
  • Playing with Fire: Her Burning Bolt special attack lets her scorch distant foes with a blast of flames.
  • Stop Being Stereotypical: Ellion is constantly disappointed and dismayed by the orcs she encounters being dumb, sadistic, filthy brutes.

Lynette Hurtado

A warrior-priestess of the Goddess of Truth and Justice, Libra, Lynette hails from the great trading city of Wolftown, where she originally used her skills and position as an arbiter to resolve dispute and punish thieves or crooked merchants - usually with death. She has come to Firetop Mountain in hopes of finding a sacred warhammer crafted by the dwarves who once dwelled there. Like her fellow priest Landov, her Education and Righteousness are her greatest assets in her exploration of Firetop Mountain.

Lin Wen-Wu

Younger twin-brother of the famous Lin Wen-Tsai, Wen-Wu would have happily spent his life as a scholar had his brother not been defeated in battle by a mighty orc warrior, who hacked off the once-proud swordsman's dominant arm and crippled him. Obligated to restore the honor of his family, he took up his brother's former role as the heir to the family's school of swordsmanship, and after three years of training has now come to Firetop Mountain in search of the orc who defeated his brother. His training has left him with great Dexterity and Keen Eyes, traits that will come in handy in his quest.
  • Ancestral Weapon: Part of Lin's quest is to recover the family's sacred blade, Jian, which was taken by the orc who cut off his brother's arm.
  • Arch-Enemy: Gishrak G'Aarak, the orc mercenary. Lin will battle this foe multiple times through the dungeon, and has the choice of either leaving after finally taking Gishrak's head, or staying and finishing off Zagor as well.
  • Katanas Are Just Better: Averted. Lin is actually Chinese themed, not Japanese. His Ancestral Weapon Jian takes its name from the Chinese longsword, and is implied to be shaped like one, too.

Malleus Malleus

One of Allansia's most famous gladiators, Malleus has lived a surprisingly long life for one who made a living through his dedication to fighting for a living. Having left the pits behind, he has become an adventurer to keep his skills sharp and his coffers full, despite his advancing age. He has come to Firetop Mountain in search of a werewolf, Canavar Borik, who both disgraced him in battle and infected him with lycanthropy a month ago. Only slaying Borik before the next full moon will keep him from becoming a werewolf in turn. Wielding a lethal ball and chain, he is highly Dexterous, but alas he is totally Illiterate.
  • Blood Sport: Spent his youth competing in these, then turned to adventuring when it ceased to be a challenge.
  • Epic Flail: His weapon of choice is a spiked metal ball on a heavy chain.
  • Involuntary Shapeshifting: Due to being a werewolf who hasn't yet succumbed to his curse, there are points where he will partially or wholly transform, despite not wanting to.
  • Logical Weakness: Being a werewolf means he can't touch silver, so he cannot use the silver bow & arrow, silver crucifix, or silver chalice. Players should plan accordingly.
  • Old Master: He's an old man, to the point his character figurine is painted with white hair, but he gotten to be that old after a lifetime as a professional gladiator and fighter. Even in his old age, he continues adventuring both for profit and to keep his strength up, still wielding his iconic Epic Flail. With a Skill score of 9 and a Stamina of 19, he's one of the toughest human adventurers in the game

Ophelia Lapwing

A female elf from the Darkwood Forest, Ophelia is regarded as strange and ephemeral even by the standards of her own people. Although she is already fantastically wealthy, she continues to adventure for the sheer love of money. Her special skills are that she is both Educated and Lucky.

Vignor Firestorm

Son of the famous adventurer Magnus Firestorm, Vignor feels obligated to live up to his ancestor's reputation and his traveled the world in order to prove his might equals that of his father, amassing a formidable reputation of his own. Whilst not particularly bright, his incredible strength and determination has allowed him to triumph over impossible odds. He has the advantage of great Dexterity, but his Illiteracy can prove a considerable hinderance.
  • The Big Guy: With a whopping 22 Stamina, Vignor has the second highest health rating of any adventurer, inferior only to the Rhino-Man Twenty Three and superior to both the half-orc Ellion and the reputedly giant-blooded Arran.
  • BFS: Vignor wields a massive greatsword as his weapon of choice.
  • Dumb Muscle: Vignor's own character description calls him out as being pretty dumb, which manifests in his having the Illiterate penalty, but his strength and fortitude are immense.

Haldar Eriksson

Renowned as one of the luckiest adventurers to roam Titan, Haldar of Orngard has found himself in deep trouble time and time again — usually as a result of his own reckless behavior and foolhardy antics — only to escape through some miraculous twist of fate. Haldar revels in his own good fortune, and throws himself into the search for fortune and glory, trusting his natural Luck and Keen Eyes to see him to victory.
  • Born Lucky: Any character with the Lucky special attribute is blessed by fortune, which manifests both as a higher than average Luck stat and in gameplay by rendering certain Luck checks into either Skill checks or automatic successes.
