    The Library

The Library and its Librarians

The Invisible Library is a structure and organization dedicated to stabilizing reality by harvesting fiction from all the alternate worlds in The Multiverse. To accomplish this task, it dispatches Librarians to each of these worlds with a shopping list of unique books to find and bring back (and if the Librarians decide that a five-fingered discount is called for, well, that's just part of the job).
  • Blind Obedience: Librarians are encouraged not to ask questions about the Library’s mission statement or nature of existence.
  • Cunning Linguist: As globetrotters (and dimension walkers), Librarians are trained to be polyglots so that they can handle as many different books as possible.
  • Language of Magic: The Language offers Librarians command over reality itself, albeit with restrictions.
  • Magic Librarian: Every full-fledged Librarian has command over the Language.
  • Phantom Thief: Librarians most often acquire their target books through theft and subterfuge, showing up out of nowhere and disappearing into the night with their quarry in hand.
  • Team Switzerland: The Library prides itself on its neutrality in the multidimensional conflict between dragons and the Fae.

    Irene

Irene Winters

As a rank-and-file Librarian, Irene serves the Library as an interdimensional librarian-spy. Though she appears rather nondescript on the surface, she carries a quick mind, clever tongue, and a fierce resolve to get the job done no matter the cost to herself.
  • Badass in Distress: Irene ends up captive to someone about once every other book, with at least one time being on purpose.
  • Casual Danger Dialog: Irene’s go-to conversational tool for dealing with stressful situations is witty banter.
  • Chronic Hero Syndrome: Irene can't help but throw herself at danger face-first to protect her friends and loved ones, even if the situation calls for caution.
  • Consummate Liar: Irene's so good at lying, she can even pull the wool over the eyes of people who know she's a liar.
  • Genre Savvy: As a Librarian, Irene has a thorough understanding of the narrative tropes that drive storylines in chaos-infested worlds.
  • Guile Hero: If a mission has gone right, Irene's opponents won't even know she was there, let alone a threat.
  • Iron Lady: Kai once notes that Irene's bearing is similar to that of a dragon.
  • Heroic Self-Deprecation: Irene is the sort of person who can save everyone important to her without anyone even noticing while also also damning herself for failing to stop a minor event across town that she didn't even know about at the time.
  • Master Actor: Irene can change her bearing and demeanor at the drop of a hat, should the situation require it.
  • The Mentor: Irene serves as a teacher of Librarian field service first to Kai, then Catherine.
  • Self-Care Epiphany: After all her friends impress the point upon Irene that they would much rather she continue living than die for their sakes, Irene stops bothering to ask them to get out of harm's way for their own safety.
  • Silk Hiding Steel: Even when in an alternate world where women are expected to carry themselves with a certain propriety, Irene always has a plan to handle things when the situation turns violent.

    Kai

Kai Strongrock

The youngest and smallest son of the great dragon monarchs. Proud and eternally loyal, Kai is one of Irene's staunchest allies and a formidable force in his own right.
  • Action Fashionista: Kai has an understated need to wear expensive, high-quality clothes, but he never lets this hold him back from kicking ass.
  • Making a Splash: Kai's elemental domain is water, granting him both a sense of bodies of water and the ability to manipulate them.
  • Undying Loyalty: Kai is slow to trust, but once a person earns his trust he is willing to put his life on the line for them.
  • Weredragon: Kai typically appears as a ridiculously handsome human, but he commands the ability to shift into his true draconic form at will.
  • What Would X Do?: When confronted with situations he doesn’t understand, Kai’s first approach is to ask himself what Irene would do.

    Vale

Peregrine Vale

The greatest detective in London B-395. True to his archetype, there are few cases or mysteries that Vale can't solve or uncover.
  • The Conscience: Vale isn’t particularly more law-abiding than the rest of the team, but he’s almost always the first to bring up the cost in human lives when discussing a matter.
  • Expy: Of Sherlock Holmes, though most people are polite enough not to bring it up.
  • Gentleman Detective: Vale is noted to be of nobility at several points, though his title comes far less into play than his demeanor and sense of propriety.
  • Half-Human Hybrid: Though not explicitly confirmed, Vale is said to have a trace of Fey blood in his lineage. It certainly would go a long way towards explaining his tendency towards archetypal behavior, though.
  • Master of Disguise: Once Vale dons one of his signature disguises, it can be almost impossible to recognize the man.
  • Sword Cane: Vale's weapon of choice. It also has a built-in electric discharger.

    Silver

Lord Silver

The most powerful Fey in London B-395, a libertine, and a spymaster all in one. His interests are clearly his own, but coincidence tends to put him on Irene’s side more often than not.

  • Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny!: Silver can rarely keep his mind on a given subject, as he'd rather concern himself with matters of fashion and high society.
  • The Casanova: Courtesy of Silver’s Glamour.
  • The Charmer: Silver knows how to use his Glamour to get what he wants.
  • The Dandy: Silver loves fashion and isn't afraid to show it.
  • Enemy Mine: Even though Lord Silver is clearly not a person to be trusted, he and Irene end up working together to take out common foes like the Guantes.
  • Glamour: Lord Silver carries an aura about him that seduces everyone around him that he is interested in.
  • Handsome Lech: Whenever Silver experiences a Glamour Failure, his behavior comes across as far more lecherous than romantic.
  • The Spymaster: Lord Silver sits at the center of his London’s web of intrigue.

    Coppelia

Coppelia

A senior Librarian and Irene's mentor, most of Irene’s missions start and end with a conversation with Coppelia.
  • Ageless Immortality: By virtue of being a senior Librarian, and thus permitted to serve the Library as a permanent resident, Coppelia does not age.
  • Eccentric Mentor: Coppelia tends to rate Irene's questions on a scale of 1 through 10.
  • The Handler: Coppelia is tasked by the other senior Librarians to manage Irene and her more impulsive tendencies. This goes hand in hand with passing assignments out to Irene and acting as her mentor.

    Bradamant

Bradamant

Irene's former mentor and current rival. Though neither woman is particularly "moral", Bradamant is far more unfettered than Irene and carries herself with an air of superiority.
  • The Rival: Even though Irene and Bradamant are nominatively on the same side, they can't help but butt heads.
  • The Unfettered: Bradamant prioritizes getting the job done for the Library above all else, including the safety of her colleagues.

    Alberich

Alberich

The Library's oldest and most dangerous foe. A former Librarian until he turned traitor, Alberich wields the Language with a skill like no other and commands the forces of chaos at a level to rival even the most powerful Fey.
  • Dangerous Deserter: Part of why Alberich is considered so dangerous is the very fact that he was able to betray the Library in the first place.
  • The Dreaded: Any mention of Alberich is enough to send any sensible Librarian running.
  • No-Nonsense Nemesis: Alberich is a thorough planner and a deadly serious villain. His only weakness, if he could be said to have any, is his tendency towards malice.
  • The Oath-Breaker: Part of what makes Alberich so formidable is that he is the only Librarian to date to have broken his vows to the Library.
  • Really 700 Years Old: Alberich first abandoned the Library hundreds of years ago. He has kept himself alive through the use of chaos magic.
  • Runic Magic: Alberich’s specialty is his written use of the Language. His most cunning traps and powerful wards come in the form of written Language circles or papers.
  • Skin Walker: Literally. Alberich skins his victims and wears their skins to assume their identity.
  • Supernatural Sealing: Of the “signs and sigils” variant. Alberich is particularly talented at using the written Language to restrict its use and to imprison other Language-users, though even without writing equipment he’s still a formidable foe in spoken Language duels.

    The Guantes

Lord and Lady Guantes

A pair of Fey schemers who play for high stakes. Between the two, Lord Guantes is the charismatic manipulator, while Lady Guantes is the planner behind the scenes.
  • Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny!: Lord Guantes shares this trait with his rival Silver. The reason that Lord Guantes has proven rather more successful than Silver is because his wife, Lady Guantes, is not so easily distracted.
  • Battle Couple: While the Guantes are masterminds first and foremost, they're more than capable of holding their own in battle together.
  • The Corrupter: True to his archetype as a manipulator, Lord Guantes is capable of talking a captive audience into betraying their own mothers.
  • The Chessmaster: Lady Guantes' specialty is manipulating events.
  • Closer to Earth: Lady Guantes is far less prone to the typical Fae dramatics, and is indicated to be rather less powerful than her husband or Silver. That said, she has the very useful ability to remain level-headed and to keep her husband on-task.
  • Complexity Addiction: Lord Guantes' greatest weakness is a tendency to juggle too many Machiavellian plans at the same time, necessitating his wife to step in and keep things straight.
  • Dimensional Traveler: Lord Guantes is a powerful enough Fey to walk between worlds without assistance. His wife, Lady Guantes, does not share this power.
  • Manipulative Bastard: Lord Guantes' specialty is manipulating people.
