    Rachel Morgan

Rachel Mariana Morgan

25 year-old witch, former IS runner, now equal partner in the 'Vampiric Charms' freelance runner and security service that she founded with Ivy Tamwood and Jenks. She is Ivy's business partner, roommate, and best friend.

  • Action Girl: Kicks ass with or without magic.
  • Action Girlfriend: When push comes to shove, Rachel is incredibly protective of the one's she loves - especially her varying love interests. Many a villain found this out the hard way.
  • All Girls Want Bad Boys: Over and over.
  • All of the Other Reindeer: Rachel's relationship with most other Inderlanders.
  • All Witches Have Cats: Rachel lives with a cat, though the cat technically belongs to Jenks.
  • Book Dumb: Rachel, underscored by her fiery personality and aversion to authority figures. Her father intended to prevent her being taught ley line magic because it would start her down the path to becoming a fully-fledged demon.
  • Braids of Action: Rachel usually wears her hair in a braid, though it tends to get unravelled when she's working her magic.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Around Ivy.
  • Fiery Redhead: Inherited from her mother.
  • Hero with Bad Publicity: More so in the latter novels to the point where she gets shunned.
    • She has arranged the shunning to be removed.
  • Interspecies Romance: All of her relationships are this, technically, seeing as she is a demon, including Kisten (living vampire), Nick (human), and finally Trent, an elf.
  • Long Hair Is Feminine: Rachel starts to grow her hair out in the middle of the series.
  • Quirky Curls: One of her defining characteristics. She uses a charm to tame them.
  • Shapeshifter: Rachel can and does transform into various animals including a wolf and a mink with the help of earth magic and later using demonic curses.
  • Technical Pacifist
  • Thrill Seeker
  • Tomato in the Mirror: She finds out she's a demon in the sixth book.
  • Took a Level in Badass: Does this periodically. She starts as a simple earth witch and every other book or so learns a new type of magic to add to her arsenal. First she learns ley-line magic, then black magic, then demon magic secondhand from Ceri and now is learning it first hand from Al.
  • Violently Protective Girlfriend: Was willing to go up against Piscary to save Kisten. She only failed because Kistan had already died twice to protect Rachel the night before, and she repressed the memory almost instantly.

    Ivy Tamwood

Ivy Alisha Tamwood

Living vampire, former IS runner, now equal partner in 'Vampiric Charms' freelance runner and security service with Rachel Morgan and Jenks. She is Rachel's business partner, roommate, and best friend.

  • Action Girl: Goes with being a vampire, but she's also very skilled at hand-to-hand combat and deadly with a sword.
  • Aloof Dark-Haired Girl: Tall, pale-skinned, dark-haired, and more reserved and aloof than her witch partner.
  • Lesbian Vampire: Or rather, bisexual vampire. She is a rare heroic version of this trope.
  • Statuesque Stunner: 6 feet tall and very attractive. Rachel notes that she looks like a model.

    Jenks

Jenks

An eighteen-year-old pixy, equal partner in 'Vampiric Charms' freelance runner and security service, together with Rachel Morgan and Ivy Tamwood. Husband of Matalina and father of dozens of pixy children, most notably Jax, Jumoke, and Jhi.

  • Boisterous Bruiser: He is a lighthearted joker, but incredibly fast, and deadly.
  • Fairy Companion: He serves as Rachel and Ivy's backup/sidekick, and eventually works with both Quen and Trent at various points. He is a pixy and the sworn enemy of fairies, though.
  • Sweet Tooth: Around honey, to the point it gets him drunk.
  • We Areas Mayflies: As a pixy, nearing the end of his life until a curse resets his lifespan, giving him another twenty years.

     Trent Kalamack

Trenton Aloysius Kalamack

An elven geneticist, businessman, politician, and drug manufacturer. He is the son of Kal and Trisk, as well as the father of Lucy and father figure to Ray. While initially an enemy of/annoyance to Rachel, their relationship evolves over the course of the series.

  • Action Dad: After the birth of Lucy he gains this distinction, shown most obviously in Million-Dollar Baby
  • Assassination Attempt:
    • Both of Trent's brothers did not survive to adulthood. Trent states outright that he believes the only reason he lived when they did not was because he was being protected by Jonathan.
    • At one point, David also planned to assassinate Trent due to him starting to lose his grasp on any sort of morality.
  • Anti-Villain: All of the bad and immoral things he does, up to and including murder, blackmail, kidnapping, dealing drugs, and interrogation/torture, not to mention keeping Rachel in a cage for days while she was transformed into a mink, are to keep his species alive.
  • The Atoner: Later in the series, he begins to do better. This is in large part due to Rachel's influence and becoming a father.
  • Battle Couple: He eventually becomes this with Rachel although is somewhat less adept than she is.
  • Determinator: Everything he does is to save his species, and he will stop at almost nothing to do so.
  • Earn Your Happy Ending]]: At the end of the series, he and Rachel have been together for decades and are still deeply in love. Trent gives up significant political influence to be with Rachel and to become the person he wants to be. His efforts eventually pay off, as after more than twenty years, he has regained his political power and remains a wealthy and successful businessman.
  • Heel–Face Turn: His morality, actions, beliefs, and even business practices evolve over the course of the series. By the end, he's gone completely legitimate.
    • He worries that his daughter won't love him because he's a murderer and someone who does bad things even if they're for good reasons.
  • I Am Not My Father: Trent worries about becoming amoral and someone who believes that the end justifies the means, no matter what, the exact sort of person his father was.
    • When he becomes a father he is also determined not to be cold and distant to Lucy and Ray the way his own father was to him.
    • Trent is also determined not to repeat the mistakes of his ancestors and says as much multiple times after his Heel–Face Turn. The short story Sudden Backtrack very strongly implies that one of his direct ancestors was responsible for the curse that rendered the demons infertile and bound them in the Ever After, as the elven antagonist in that story is named 'Kalla.'
  • Interspecies Romance: He eventually falls hopelessly in love with Rachel and they wind up getting together.
  • Jerkass: He starts off this way, although does get somewhat better as time goes on.
  • Our Elves Are Different: Like Quen, Jonathan, and Ellasbeth, he is an elf.
  • Papa Wolf: He loves his daughters very much, and will do anything up to and including murder to protect them.
  • Villain with Good Publicity: Trent gets away with a lot by being politically-connected, wealthy, and charismatic, as well as donating extensively to charity. He also also employs a team of skilled lawyers and has loyal underlings, including Quen and Jonathan, who cover up any wrongdoing on his part or on the part of his company.
