Protagonists

    Aldo

Aldo

A magitool repairman

  • Abusive Parents: As revealed in his memories, Aldo's parents didn't love him in the slightest, and saw him only as a tool.
  • Experienced Protagonist: He used to be a mercenary in the past, and his swordsmanship back then was so good, Dea never could surpass him.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He can be very blunt and always pretends to be Only in It for the Money, but he still does what's right even when he may have ignored it. This is best exemplified when he goes to free Ariel, claiming that he does it on an off-chance that he may have repaired the Brainwashing magitool, and if this came out his reputation may take a hit. Nobody's fooled.
  • Ludicrous Precision: He's prone to making overly precise estimations, like calculating that he needs to sleep in an inn for exactly 3 hours and 36 minutes to get his money's worth out of it.
  • Making a Splash: Aldo is naturally Water-elemental, and learns Water-based spells.
  • What Is This Thing You Call "Love"?: When Alice praises him as a person, he's stunned by the emotion it caused, and initially thinks that it's some kind of a spell. As it turns out, nobody in his life has ever saw value in him personally, and as such he has never felt truly happy. This is why he doesn't know how to interpret his feelings when he does experience them.

    Alice

Alice

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/soe_alice.png

A young girl, who lives alone.

  • Equippable Ally: Following her transformation, every battle starts with her turning into a Magisword for Aldo to wield.
  • Feel No Pain: After Alice got strengthened, she lost the ability to feel pain. She learned she feel no pain after her leg was cut and she didn't feel it.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: Attempts one when the Guild is attacked by monsters, and she asks Yado to turn her into a Magisword, capable of defeating them. It doesn't stick, and she is able to turn back, but she had no way of knowing it, and turning into an inanimate weapon is generally regarded as a Fate Worse than Death.
  • Making a Splash: Alice is naturally Water-elemental and her Magisword form gives Aldo a Water-based move.
  • Sense Loss Sadness: One of the first signs that there is something wrong with her strengthening as a Magisword is that she notes that she lost her ability to sense tastiness. She still can feel the taste, but can't exactly think of it as "tasty" anymore.
  • Wise Beyond Their Years: Deconstructed to an extent. She is incredibly bright for her age, being able to make a legitimate living at ten years old. However, due to her age she still doesn't know some things, and refuses to get any help from outside, taking it for the adult not taking her seriously. Part of her Character Development has her growing out of this and learning to take advices when it's needed.

    Nate

Nate

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/soe_nate.png

A traveler

  • Abnormal Ammo: Most of his skills involve firing special bullets, that have various effects.
  • The Gunslinger: Nate uses guns and crossbows as his weapon.
  • Holographic Disguise: Nate is an alien from another planet to fight Yado and find a way to turn Clay back to normal.
  • The Lost Lenore: His lover, Clay, is seemingly dead. He has a special magitool that recreates her projection from his memories, but it's a fake, something that he himself comments on. Eventually it's revealed that Clay was turned into his Magisword, and he starts seeking to turn her back.

    Ariel

Ariel

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/soe_ariel.png

A young woman, who was brainwashed into being an enforcer of Setiboss, lord of Cordelia Dominion. After the party frees her, she, having nowhere to go, follows them.

  • Brainwashed: When the party meets her, she is kept in absolute obedience by a special magitool. She's been this way for ten years, being forced to fight anyone who tried to rebel against Setiboss.
  • Cuteness Proximity: In one sequence she accidentally lets escape an animal the party tries to capture because she was distracted by its cuteness.
  • Does Not Know Her Own Strength: Lingering effects from the brainwashing magitool gave her an incredible physical might. When the party volunteers to maintain an inn, she can't do any job finer that chopping wood, because she keeps tearing bedsheets, breaking pots, and splitting cutting boards in two.

Prometheus Dominion

    Stefana

Stefana Prometheus

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/soe_stefana.png

An heir to a lord of Prometheus Dominion, who investigates a conspiracy against it.

    Dea

Dea

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/soe_dea.png

A mercenary, who works for Stefana.

  • Blood Knight: Every time he encounters Aldo, he tries to get him to duel, and even outright attacks the party when Stefana is not around. He apparently dueled Aldo many times in the past but was never able to surpass him.
  • Draconic Humanoid: His final battle sprite shows him with draconic scales all over his body, along with numerous spikes and a tail. It just shows how far he has gone.
  • Morality Pet: He has one in his little brother, Io. When Mainbelt catches up on it and removes him from the picture, Dea goes nuts.
  • Sanity Slippage: Thanks to Mainbelt turning his brother Io into a Magisword and then impersonating the boy to make Dea strengthen it, Dea goes off the deep end. He slaughters monsters by hundreds, and is obsessed with challenging Aldo more than ever. Eventually, after consuming magic of the Mainbelt space, he devolves into Laughing Mad, and heroes have to make a deal with Mainbelt and turn him into a Magisword just to save him. In the end, however, he gets better thanks to having Io restored.

Nereid Dominion

    Adam

Adam Nereid

https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/soe_adam.png

The ruler of Nereid Dominion, who plans world conquest.

  • Taking Over The World: His main goal is to conquer the whole world. To this end he plots against Prometheus Dominion - his strongest rival, and conspires with lesser lords, only to later betray them too.

    Ophelia
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/soe_orphelia.png

The leader of a famous mercenary company "Daimoth Wing", who was hired by Adam Nereid.

  • Brawn Hilda: She's notably heavyset and visibly aged, but still a powerful fighter and a leader of a mercenary company.
  • Call to Agriculture: In the epilogue she stays in Arion with her men (who now can't really leave the town without turning back into Magiswords), and starts a farm here.
  • A Father to His Men: She highly values her men, and it leads her to ally with heroes when some of mercenaries are unwillingly turned into Magiswords.
  • Master of the Levitating Blades: When you fight her, she's been brainwashed, and uses Magiswords made from her subordinates. She wields one weapon in her hand, with four others floating around and following he strikes.

The Aliens (Unmarked spoilers!)

    Mainbelt
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/soe_mainbelt.png

An alien who is Yado's enemy. He arrived to help out the group... Or so he claims, anyway. In reality, he's the master of Yado, and creates Magiswords in order to destroy the greatest threat to his race - the Tournoire.

  • Asshole Victim: The Mainbelt citizen who made Dea's brother into a Magisword was among those who perished when Tournoire arrived. It's hard to feel sorry for him.
  • The Corrupter: The "main" on-screen Mainbelt made Io into a Magisword and then impersonated the boy, guilt-tripping Dea into strengthening it, just so Elpisia could be made a bit quicker.
  • Ditto Aliens: You actually speak with several Mainbelt citizen late in the game, but they all use the same sprite and portrait.
  • Lack of Empathy: Mainbelt are emotionless, and thus don't understand them. However, it also means that they can be callous even towards their own kind. Heroes exploit this trait, and imprison one of them as a living magic battery, as a payment for getting rid of Tournoire.

    Yado
https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/soe_yado.png

An alien who goes around turning people into magiswords.

  • Exact Words: He offers people "power", but no one said that they would be able to wield it. Indeed, the resulting Magiswords are quite powerful, but also inanimate.
  • Monster Protection Racket: Yado specifically creates monsters who attack people, and then appears before them to offer "power" to them. And the payment is the person's Magisword form.

    Halle
Another race of aliens with plans on Terra. Nate is actually one of them.
  • Ditto Aliens: They all use the same sprites. That applies even to Nate out of disguise.
  • Emotion Eater: A benign version. They live off "Aurus", an energy that's produced by emotions. Consuming it doesn't harm the "donor" in any way.
  • Not So Above It All: They claim to be emotionless, but in the end one of them, who uses a Holographic Disguise of a little girl, goes to play with children.
