Go To

Ruby Rose

Colors: Blue/Red
The Hero. Leader of Team RWBY, and an endless spring of optimism and kindness in a world as dark as Remnant, Ruby is more out of her depth than ever before; the unexpected Ignition of her Spark has brought and her mentor, Professor Ozpin, to the world of Ravnica, where she quickly becomes embroiled in Guild politics, despite her best efforts. Her natural affinity for machinery and weapons crafting, however, made her a natural fit for the Izzet League.
  • I Can't Dance: When practicing a waltz for Anastasia's heist, she keeps tripping over her own feet. The Orzhov woman even lampshades in wonder at how Ruby can so graceful on the battlefield yet so klutzy on the dance floor.
  • Wrench Wench: Joins the Izzet League.

Weiss Schnee

Colors: White/Blue/Black
Heiress to the Schnee Dust Company, and partner to Ruby Rose, Weiss is a born perfectionist determined to rise above the sins of her family. After the Battle Of Beacon, her Spark ignites, and both she and Neptune Vasilias land on the isle of Urborg on the plane of Dominaria, where they fall under the tutelage of Bo Levar.
  • Boxing Lessons for Superman: Part of her lessons from Bo Levar focus on refining and relearning her combat abilities sans Aura or Dust, especially in regards to her swordsmanship, as she remembers how Aura is less than affective against Black Mana and/or magic that targets the soul.
  • Dark Is Not Evil: Weiss is still a good person despite her inherent affinity for Black mana. Unfortunately, she struggles to come to terms with her ability to use it because she associates Black's traits with her father.
  • Demonic Possession: Geyadrone possesses her, being interested in her Summoning Semblance.
  • Heroic BSoD: Has one when she learns she has a natural affinity for Black mana, in addition to Blue and White; she'd learned enough by that point to know that Black is related to selfishness and amorality, traits she's learned to associate with her father. The thought that she has anything in common with him is not one she takes well.
  • I Hate Past Me: Weiss's reluctance to use Black mana isn't just because it's traits remind her of her father, she's afraid that she'll regress in the Character Development that she's made since she met RWBY, that it'll cause the racism against those with animal features that she's worked so hard to overcome to flare up again.
  • Yin-Yang Bomb: Weiss is revealed to have a rare affinity for three different colors: Blue, White, and Black (a combination fans nickname "Esper" after the Shard of Alara aligned with the same three colors).

Ozma/Ozpin

Colors: All
One of the oldest surviving beings in the Multiverse, Ozma was once an ancient and powerful Planeswalker, in the time when that meant god-like power and immortality. Sacrificing himself to close a time rift during the Time Spiral crisis inadvertently sent him thousands of years into the past and to the world of Remnant. A simple attempt to rescue an imprisoned princess, however, turned into much more than he bargained for when it drew the ire of the local gods...
  • All Your Powers Combined: Word of God reveals that he can use all five colors of mana. He's still recovering from his time on Remnant, though, so don't expect him to pull out feats like Ugin's anytime soon.
  • Adaptational Backstory Change: Where to begin? The fact that he'd already been an extremely powerful planeswalker for millennia before even setting foot on Remnant is a massive change to the character, and his relationship with Salem, the God of Light, and numerous other characters is altered accordingly.
  • Broken Bird: It's hard to describe just how much Hell this man has been through, even more than in canon. By this point, Ozpin is just tired.
  • Didn't See That Coming: His spark reigniting when he forced the sparks in Vale to ignite in an attempt to send them beyond Salem's reach was a pleasant surprise.
  • I Have Many Names: Besides Ozma/Ozpin, it's implied that he's picked up a few other names and titles over the millennia, with Tai showing familiarity with the image of a 'Lord of Scars' in a ruined Skyclave on Zendikar, who has a Magic Staff suspiciously similar to Ozma's...
  • Nay-Theist: He doesn't have a high opinion of gods and their followers, and after his experiences with the Brothers, who can blame him? One of the reasons he sought shelter with the Izzet League upon landing on Ravnica was because they were one of the guilds with no religious requirements, unlike the Selesnya or Orzhov.
  • Time Abyss: He was over 10,000 years old before he got sent back to Remnant's distant past, and depending on how long it was between his first death and revival he might be older than Ugin and Bolas. All of this makes him one of the oldest beings in the multiverse.

Yang Xiao Long

Colors: Red/Black/?Green/Blue
Ruby's older paternal half-sister and fellow Team RWBY member, Yang has been having an especially hard time since her Spark ignited, especially since she lost her right arm at the same time. Sent to the plane of Zendikar, she was luckily found by her father Taiyang after being ambushed by bandits, though after he left on an expedition to help support them she got involved in an underground fighting circuit. After a conversation with the manipulative Xen, she loses control and kills her opponent, planeswalking to Lorywn in her anguish.
  • An Arm and a Leg: As in canon, Yang loses her arm during the Fall of Beacon right before her Spark ignites. Luckily, her first trip through the Blind Eternities heals over the stump.
  • The Assimilator: She gains the ability to absorb both mana and the physical traits of others.
  • Handicapped Badass: Despite losing her arm, several people have learned, to their detriment, that you shouldn't underestimate her because of the injury.
  • Playing with Fire: As her powers develop, she starts showing off an affinity for fire magic.
  • Sanity Slippage: She is not in a good place mentally due to the trauma from the Fall, and Xen's manipulations don't help either.

Blake Belladona

Colors: Black/Blue
A Faunus planeswalker and member of Team RWBY, Blake's Spark igniting sends her to the plane of Ixalan with only her friend Sun for company. At least, until she ends up joining the Brazen Coalition.
  • Out of Focus: She and Sun haven't appeared in any capacity since the initial chapter establishing that they ended up on Ixalan.

Jaune Arc

Colors: White/Black
The Leader of Team JNPR, Jaune wanted to get into Beacon and be a hero so badly that he forged his transcripts so he could live up to his family's heroic legacy. After being tortured by Cinder, he then pushes his teammate Pyrrha out of the way of a fireball said psychotic Fall Maiden sends their way, only saved by his Spark igniting and sending him to the world of Eldraine, where he might finally become the hero that he always dreamed of being...
  • Taking the Bullet: His Spark ignites when he pushes Pyrrha out of the way of a fireball attack by Cinder.
  • Yin-Yang Bomb: Jaune is capable of using both White and Black mana. Specifically, his left arm is capable of both draining the vitality and absorbing the spirits of others, as well as healing magic.

Pyrrha Nikos

Colors: White/Red/Blue
A member of Team JNPR, Pyrrha was spared her canonical fate when her Spark ignited upon Cinder seemingly incinerating Jaune during the Fall of Beacon, sending her to the plane of Theros. There, after defeating a chimera, she starts to seek out the shrines of the gods in order to try and find a new destiny for herself.
  • Desperately Looking for a Purpose in Life: After Pyrrha arrives in Theros, she starts seeking out the shrines of the gods in the hopes of finding a purpose for herself again. A vision she has at one such shrine even calls her "destiny's seeker".
  • Omniglot: Ephara blesses her with the ability to know and understand any words or script she may see.

Taiyang Xiao Long

Colors: Green/Blue/?
The father of Ruby and Yang, he was thrown into Zendikar along with his older daughter, but was eventually forced to leave her behind to go on an expedition to support the two of them. Unfortunately, things don't go as planned...
  • Papa Wolf: When Yang is assaulted by bandits after arriving in Zendikar, he leaps to his injured daughter's defense upon finding her and absolutely pummels them.
